Dragon Age: Inquisition Review Thread

There's been a lot of overhyped games this year that turned out to be flops so I'm not surprised.

exactly, what was that game that came out around september, no story, hyped to infinity and beyond (jk) but yeah its bioware, they havent had the best record lately(1 step forward 2 back here and there) but i'm hyped for this game(i wish i wasnt just incase this is DA2 2.0 but thankfully that doesnt look to be the case)

Why is GT waiting so long with its reviews today? This and AC still aren't up. Is it always like that? They used to release them quickly. It's one of the few sites I watch the reviews at.

They might have internal problems right now. There were lots of layoffs and Bossman is no longer with them so, might be related.

I really cant believe that so many people were betting on this game turning out bad. All were (and still are) pointing towards a positive outcome.

EA and Bioware have been hit or miss lately so you can understand that. Also people have different standards when they're judging games, I enjoy Skyrim as a game but I think it's a terrible, shallow RPG. I'm almost certain I'm going to feel the same with this so I probably won't be all positive about it.

A great article on DA:I from the verge, written by a person who rarely finishes games, especially not RPGS.

http://www.theverge.com/2014/11/11/7193647/dragon-age-inquisition-pc-ps4-impressions

This part really stood out to me and increased my hype meter. I hope the game feels the same way to me:
What I'm saying is, for the first time playing a role-playing game, I don't feel like I have to establish my identity purely through predetermined dialogue trees. I establish myself through the actions I take and the value I place on the many people and lands of a fictional world. I'm sure much of what I like is a sleight of hand, the developer creating the illusion of control. Which is fine because it's the best trick in town and I have no idea how it works.

Right now, I am playing a fantasy role-playing video game because it feels like a safe place to test my beliefs, a laboratory where my personal belief system can be tested by a constant stream of grand moral questions.

...I'm not making the game easy for myself. And that's what I want. I'm being tested. That's what makes the game so accessible. On its deepest level, Dragon Age: Inquisition is about the person playing it.

That part sounds awesome...

as a the type of gamer that changes how he plays most open world games or RPGs... even GTA V or WoW... Suikoden, FF Tactics, Mass Effect... I'll try make irrelevant, superficial decisions, even perform pointless game actions, just to try flesh out my 'story' or craft my own in-game story... as that type of gamer, that quote sounds awesome

I ignored this game for a long time because i tought it would be just another typical western Rpg with improved graphics...But seems like that is not the case

Will spend the AC Unity Money on this!

But yeah it looks like this might hit home. Of course ME3 had positive reviews too so its still to soon to call imo. I'm still cautious, but very optimistic.

I'm one of those who don't get ME3 hate.

Endings did blow for sure, RGB ftw, but everything before that was rather solid stuff. To me it seems like most of "Yeah, ME3 is bad game!" people jumped to hate train only after they saw ending and suddenly everything about game was bad.

Anyone know when pre-loading is supposed to start on origin?

Should be next Friday, 14th, for US and early next week for EU.

I'm really interested in this game, but I'm disheartened to read the story isn't newbie friendly.

The Keep should get you started :)

Well, i was talking purely from a bioware-fan standpoint. People who had enjoyed games such as the baldurs gate series, DA:O, etc and were hoping this wouldnt turn out like Dragon Age 2. For them, the signs that this game would turn out great were all there, right from the first reveal. How they were listening to fan feedback, how much development time they had, how ambitious the game looked was with the new engine in place.

This was my sense as well.

Just saw that. If anybody is curious about Knight Enchanters watch this video

Which now confirms that
Vivienne's specialty is Knight Enchanter
. From the video it looks very fun to use and can be combined with other skills as well. Very sweet. I now know that this party member is useless for me since I'm going knight enchanter.

Dawg how useful is rift mage? I'm on the fence of bringing a party member with rift mage or necromancer.

Holy. Knight Enchanter looks bad ass. This is making it hard for me to stick with Rogue.

Gonna trade in a few of my PS3 games and The last of us PS4 and pick this up. Didn't get to finish Origins and never played DA2 but I've read up on some of the story etc. Not renewing my sub of FFXIV, so between this and Destiny should be enough for a good while for me.

No review videos at 60 FPS? DId anyone review the PC version yet?

Haven't seen any 60 FPS vids, common reviewers!

TotalBiscuit is working on it, but got his copy very close to embargo so it will be few days before his video lands. He is aiming to get video out before US release.

Is the combat in this Action RPG style? I can't tell by watching the videos. DA:O was auto battle, loved Origins, didn't touch 2 based on everyone's opinions, but I'm ready for this one. Just a little confused on how it plays in terms of battling. The IGN video looks like ARPG.

There's action combat like DA2 but better. AND there's tacticla combat, like DA:O... don't know if better. I sure hope so.

The main thing about DA:O combat was that every engaement was a setpiece. IT was like a chess game that you had to figure out and tackle ina tactical, strategic way. It's why I loved DA:O and why I love games like Baldur's Gate, Wasteland 2, Divinity original sin, Icewind Dale, etc. Pure action combat bores me to tears. Button mashing is just not fun for me.

So we have tactical cam, and essentially the ingredients for really interesting, engaging tactical combat. The question remains: are the combat encounters well designed? None of the reviewers I've seen have played the game on anything but normal, and they al say that strategic combat is seldom required at that difficulty. Which is sad, but if the tactical depth and an intricate encoutner design is there on hard/nightmare, I'll be happy.

Yes, there's action combat option. You can switch between action and tactical combat in battles.

Then I'm excited because I agree with you 100%, the combat was like a chess board and that's exactly how I played it.

I AM EXCITE! Just 100% Mordor, which I was hyped for, ready for this which I was not hyped for.

I really cant believe that so many people were betting on this game turning out bad. All signs were (and still are) pointing towards a positive outcome.

I think the main reason is because there was so much (undeserved) disdain for dragon age 2 and mass effect 3 that people thought bioware under EA couldn't produce a good game. Between the sheer amount of time it took to develop, how early and how much game play we got to see prior to launch and the fact that reviews were allowed to be released a week prior to launch made it pretty obvious the game was going to be great.

I don't really care about the strategy/combat but how are the characters/choices?

That's what I've always found great in ME and DA and I hope it's something they have improved on for DA:I.

What was the miss? Even DA2 has a solid Metacritic score. I know most of Gaf hated it, but I enjoyed it, even though I liked Origins better. And the Mass Effect Trilogy is a Masterpiece!

Mmm. To me, the entirety of ME3 plot is really, really bad and cringe-worthy except the bit in Tuchanka. But I played the series for its character interactions, and I love those in the game, cheese and all.

So in general I was feeling rather positive while playing through most of the game. And then the ending came with no proper character closures and I felt slighted. And then the Citadel DLC came and I forgave it.

The overall plot is still bad, though. Also, Kai Leng.

This. Never have I seen a year where so many big titles have failed to deliver in some shape or form. Whether it's because they weren't that good or media/marketing hype is getting out of hand is the big question on my lips right now. Though, I imagine the two aren't mutually exclusive.

Either way, I started Dragon Age: Inquisition today. My first Dragon Age game. It's pleasantly surprising me.

I was thinking Knight Enchanter, but I don't know if that is just because I don't know anything about Rift Mage or Nec. But my headcanon is that
Vivienne
teaches my Inquisitor more advanced magic, so it works so well that they have that spec.

Everyone hoping for the next big thing for this gen certainly doesn't hurt in inflating that hype to hell.

I seriously don't know how I'm going to wait until Tuesday. What happened to my zen-like patience for this game? Today's review bonanza has obliterated it apparently.

In my opinion, Dragon Age 2 and the direction they went with the the Mass Effect games, pretty much bolstering their focus on action and watering down their RPG focus. They were all pretty dull to me because of that, then Mass Effect 3's ending was just a slap to the face.

That would be Kai Lame.

I think if they gave me more dialogue choices and less Shepard just speaking up whenever he wanted to (I'm pulling the strings dammit!) and removed his sudden sense of Earth-centricism, reintroduced the Crucible as "A potentially powerful weapon we could use against the Reapers" instead of "A weapon that can wipe out the reapers" and then change the finale's final bit of dialogue with extra persuade options and the plot is mostly ok to be honest. These would be big changes but it would've made the game better.

If I could change the whole plot into what I thought it was going to be after ME2, I'd do that in a heartbeat, though I completely understood that with 1.5 years of development time there's no way Bioware was gonna let me re-join Cerberus making a split-campaign where one path follows the Alliance's plan and the other, The Illusive Man's. At least Bioware could've done something more original than make Cerberus blatantly evil. Didnt' I just spend the entire second game being told how "Cerberus is not that bad actually"?

Anywho. it sounds like DA:I is a bit more like ME2 in a lot of ways. I've even heard there's loyalty missions, and I still can't wait to get it on with Cassandra and be a jerk to everybody.

Very nice to see one of the high-profile next-gen game finally delivers with the reviewers! Definitely looking forward to play this when I get a PS4.

Want to get this on PS4 but I need the isometric view that DA:O had on PC.

Anyone know if the consoles include it this time around?

Tactical view [isometric view] is available on PC and consoles.

This question repeating many times / page makes me think that we really need that OT :S
