Plenty of bands talk shit on stage, but it takes balls the size of a Honey Bucket to actually take a shit up there--and throw your work at the crowd.

That's exactly what happened when spazcore/metal act Dillinger Escape Plan opened at England's prestigious Reading Festival earlier this month. Warming things up for acts like Puddle of Mudd and Prodigy, DEP vocalist Greg Puciato defecated on stage, put the mess in a bag, and threw it out at the audience, saying, "This is an example of shit on stage, which is all you're gonna get here today."

It takes a sick mind to push that angle with the public toilet concept, but Baltimore native Puciato, who's been fronting the technically and brilliantly heavy New Jersey band for the past year, said he was sickened by the rock-star catwalk he witnessed backstage, and his stinking grenade was an impulsive reaction.

"We played with the same bands at the Leeds Festival, and hearing some of their motives for playing music was disgusting," he says. "The guy from Puddle of Mudd killed me. The whole weekend he had this attitude of, 'Don't you know who I am?'--waiting for someone to come up to him, like, 'Hey, you're that guy from Puddle of Mudd!' The two singing clowns from Prodigy kicked us out of our dressing rooms so they could have a massage room. I feel horrible talking about other bands, but this isn't from a musical perspective, it's from a personal point of view."

Okay. What was it like taking a shit onstage in front of thousands of people?

Okay, I did know! <laughs> It&#8217;s kind of crazy, in hindsight. When I did that, I didn&#8217;t necessarily know it was going to be that big of a deal. I was kind of trying to do something that would kind of make a little bit of a statement and that was the first time we&#8217;d ever played a festival. It was actually one of the first times we&#8217;d played a show with a bunch of bands we didn&#8217;t feel like we had anything in common with, because we&#8217;d come from such a small scene.

When we started out, it was unheard of for a band like us to be playing on the main stage at Reading (Festival), it was more for bands like &#8216;Puddle of Mudd&#8217; and all these commercial rock bands playing that we had nothing artistically in common with. So I figured the best thing to do would be to kind of try some sort of mass shock tactic, a &#8216;GG Allin&#8217; style thing.

What I didn&#8217;t realise at the time was the difference was GG did that kind of thing in basements, not in front of twenty or thirty thousand people. It kind of predates Youtube, so there&#8217;s not any video of it, there&#8217;s not a single video. So the memory&#8217;s becoming a little more vague to me now, since I don&#8217;t have the ability to see it.

I remember coming off stage and people were really fucking weirded out by it, like walking in massive circles around us <laughs>, just saying &#8216;what the fuck just happened?&#8217;. Immediately, there was a lot of this kind of evil chaos behind the scenes, they were talking about deporting us from the UK, saying that was &#8216;indecent&#8217; and there were people trying to sue the promoter of Reading saying they didn&#8217;t come there to see that. The people that got offended, I wanted to offend.

I didn&#8217;t know that it was going to be something that ten years later, especially in UK and Australia, pretty much every single time we go to the UK and I do any press at all, there&#8217;s always questions about it. As I said, at the time I didn&#8217;t think it was going to be as shocking as what it was made out to be!
