Sonic Boom |OT| Sonic 2014

Eh, you can say that about a lot of games. Ocarina of Time is a better game than Skyward Sword but that doesn't necessarily highlight Skyward Sword being bad. Perhaps a better example would be a platformer that was considered average to decent at the time rather than one of the best ones. Like Toy Story 2 or something.
I get your point. I would say Glover is better than Sonic Boom Rise if Lyric from what I played because at least it had a unique mechanic.

Sonic Boom on the other hand hits that threshold where its problems are sufficiently amusing enough to become a sort of feature. The glitches I've encountered are usually more hilarious than malicious.
Yeah, but something like jumping in the chest and getting stuck are pretty bad. I think OoT had less bugs than this game because I could never get Link stuck in a chest.

Mostly I am baffled how it got a release being this buggy. I am not trying to make people who enjoy it feel bad. I just wanted people to know this is a watered down Jak game with Sonic characters.

I am planning on picking this up as part of the b2g1 free promotion target is having. So far the game seems decent, and can be enjoyable. The game will break if that is what you set out and do, but playing the game normally I'm guessing the glitches won't be too bad.

Either way seeing what all you can do to the game is pretty hilarious.

I love this game more than Black knight & Secret rings & 2006 , Unleashed.

It is good game if you enjoy it .

And I think sonic fans make it sucks because of it is not running copy paste game from sonic old games history.

I liked Episode I. And II.

I think they're the biggest missed opportunity ever. It's like they made every possible mistake they could when attempting to make a sequel to Sonic 3K. It was Generations and a few fan projects that had to scratch my Classic Sonic itch.

Having said that, they're perfectly functional platformers, episode 1 more than episode 2. They're not bad games, they just should have been completely different.

I remember that section. They enabled 3D movement in a 2D section and I died.
The game is worse than Spyro 2/3. PSX platformers are better than this.
Even worse than Spyro 2/3? Oh my, I absolutely do not look forward to my time with Sonic Boom :/.

I'm sure you can cherry-pick and get whatever results you want. Hell, you even excused "physics interactions". Basically, you're saying "any time the game isn't trying to do something, it's a smooth 60 FPS". In a game full of garbage physics interactions.

Wasn't my argument. My argument was "stop making 2006's performance sound smooth, because that's bullshit." There's no "in comparison to Sonic Boom" in my statement.

But I said I'd stop.
Whelp, I actually went and played through nearly all of the action stages in 2006 just this afternoon. I still had a save with them available.

The game is even worse than I remember, jesus, but the frame-rate is actually SMOOTHER than I remember. It actually holds a very steady 60 fps during most portions of the action stages - better than many other "60 fps" games released on PS360. Heck, it runs more consistently than great games like Bayonetta 2 even. It's nowhere near as bad as you're implying. Most of the time even the physics don't really slow the game down like I remembered.

The game, though, wow...so so so so bad. I mean, holy crap, it's like the worst thing.

Oh, and the hub? That part is loaded with slowdown, shadow LOD issues, and other major major problems. If you want to say that the hub world is broken ad choppy I will agree 100%. I don't remember having to spend much time there other than finding new levels but that's definitely one of the worst things in any game I've played to date.

I'd definitely agree that Sonic Boom is a better game even though it's also pretty awful. It does run much MUCH worse than Sonic 2006, though.

I really dont get yall who enjoy this game, and I super dont get people going "It looks better than [random middling platformer]". All of the games brought up in this last page. Lost World, Jak 1, Jak Lost Frontier, Epic Mickey 2, Spyro 2/3, I would peg all of those as better than this game. No you fucking heard me, Id rather play Epic Mickey 2 than this game.

I dont think ive ever punched/stomped more buttons in a 3d platformer in my life. The combat is so braindead and abundant it makes the basic combat in a musou game look like Devil May Cry 3. Any time you have to jump platforms, and you dont have Amy's triple jump it fucking sucks. Thats ignoring all of the glitches and framerate dips that happens. Im not even looking for glitches and shit like Amy falling through the floor and winding up in some canyon scenery happens. At some point Cliff just decided he was sick of looking at the PS2 era textures because his eyes went shut and I havent seen them open since the cutscene where you meet him.

Also you know whats fucking weird? You know what shouldnt be bothering me but super is? Why does every npc in this game look like a 1930s cartoon character, but the Sonic cast are these lanky overdesigned messes. Like were they designed by different people, was the npc character designer under the impression they were getting the genesis designs back for this game? The Sonic redesigns wind up looking super out of place in the game they were redesigned for!!

OK how on earth is Spyro 2 bad?

I kinda get 3 but 2?

Admittedly I haven't played them in years. Think I should replay them. I just remember loving the shit out of Spyro 2

I played Spyro 2 for the first time only last year. It's still a great game. Spyro 3 is the ony one of the PS1 games I'm not a huge fan of.

I feel that the problem with Spyro 3 is that they tried to jam it full of verious mini-games and different styles and not all of them work. Had they just focused on the platforming with a few minigames like Spyro 2 I think it would have held up a lot better.

I remember liking 3 more than 2 but Id need to replay them because I think my beef with 2 is it had weird pacing and theres a handful of super unfun objectives thats clouding my memory of the game.

I dont think either of them really focus on the platforming as much as they should, they both require you to do unfun minigames to progress. I much preferred the pure exploration/collecting of 1.

I didn't care for any of the Spyro games when I was younger liked Crash more. Then on ps2 I liked Ratchet much better than Jak. Then on ps3 they evened out with uncharted/last of us and ratchet and clank future. Ratchet and clank are just so great. Some of the best 3d platformers ever.

Oh yeah the Crash games are definitely way better than Spyro. I think that's mainly due to the pure platforming focus of Crash. I always prefer platforming to be the focus above exploration in my platformers. The Crash games and Rayman 2 are the best 3D platformers of the PS1 era.

Reviews have started to hit - http://www.hardcoregamer.com/2014/11/13/review-sonic-boom-rise-of-lyric/116893/

They're not exactly off to a good start.
2.5, pretty much what I expected.
3 for Unity, nice.
Project F 2 got a 4. I like this site! Project F 2 for the win.

Since Project F 2 got a 4, I'm guessing that's out of 5 (at work so I can't click the link)? If so, that 's a pretty accurate score from what I've played.
Yeah, it is a five scale. The circle shows how full it is to 5/5.

Meanwhile, in the upper-right, a Freedom Planet review where it gets nearly double the score.

It's a sad state of affairs when the clone (of sorts) is better than the franchise it's inspired by. (Although at least I can confirm FP is really friggin' good.)

It seems like it's a simple matter of the folks making the clone, which FP is, loving and "getting" the source material more than the devs.

4chan sums it up pretty well.

The same, hoping to pick up Sonic Boom, Bayonetta 2 and Hyrule Warriors. Do you know when the sale ends?

Is Freedom Planet comng to consoles at some point?
As far as I know, it's desired, but nothing concrete right now. Presumably it'd come after the extra characters are released for the PC version in an upcoming (sometime) free update; with no more updates to build on top of the existing game at that point, it'd be fair game for starting a port job, not unlike how VVVVVV and The Binding of Isaac finished their games in Flash first and ported it to C/C++ proper later (with a free update for the former, with Rebirth for the latter).

I'd heard rumors of Strife and Christian "Taxman" Whitehead (Sonic CD rerelease, Sonic 1 and Sonic 2 mobile) talking about it, but so far, it's just that - talking at most, mere rumors at least.

Also, someone seems to be forcing the "I want Rocky Road Ice Cream" Meme everywhere. I don't particularly care because I find it fucking hilarious and stupid.

That is really sad. It is honestly a sad industry when something this broken can get shipped out. It does not even have Sonic 06's "so bad its good" vibe.
The first reviews are a 4 and 5 out of 10 so this game is going to bomb hard, which I am glad honestly.

So I guess I could consider it to be fun, but probably not in the intended way. It's that special brand of bad where it's actually worth playing just to see the wreckage. It's a technically bad, yet entertaining game.
Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric is like Jersey Shore. Some people like Jersey Shore for that reason I guess.

Maybe it's just me, but from watching the stream on it earlier, it actually seems entertaining in a twisted way. I actually laughed during some of those voice overs.

If you want a comparison on the two games playing for 3 hours:
I found zero glitches playing Shattered Crystal (3DS) normally. I found 10 glitches playing Rise of Lyric (Wii U) normally.
Sonic 2006 I found 5 glitches normally. This game is buggier than Sonic 2006. Let that sink in.

Maybe because I'm not a Sonic fan, but I found Episode I and especially II to be okay. They're much better than any 3D Sonic game I've tried.

Even Generations?

I only played Episode 1, but it was a piece of crap.
Yup. I played the Generations demo - I liked the classic Sonic part, while the 3D part made me skip the game entirely. Episode II in particular is an okay, functional platformer with nice music and colorful visuals, and I grabbed it for cheap on PC.

But again, I'm not a Sonic fan so my expectations might be low.

which version comes first when you buy both 3ds version or wii u ?

Technically it's Wii U then 3DS, but despite Sega's marketing the 3DS game starts off in a way that implies no connection whatsoever to the Wii U game. In fact, it starts in such a way that implies the Wii U title never happened.

Chalk it up to yet another snafu here.

It is good game if you enjoy it .
well I'm convinced

Holy shit.

We have family friends who had a son with severe autism (though in recent years they've had far better treatment than he used to) who was a fan of Sonic '06. I mean, two completely different kids, but I'm concerned if it's bad enough for a disabled child really into Sonic the Hedgehog to acknowledge it's complete shit.

An even then we had the feeling this game would be catastrophic...

That's pretty fucking sad if you think about it. The demo apparently had better lighting and texture quality. There's some rumor going around saying the plot was going to involve echidna's or something but Ken Penders and his horrid Julie Su fetish came in a stopped it.

That would explain why Knuckles is so over-powered.

I don't think it's really a bad game. For me, a bad game is one that is so dull and un-fun that I don't want to play it anymore. Stuff like Ruff Trigger, or Godzilla Destroy All Monsters Melee, or Nicktoons: Globs of Doom are bad games.

Sonic Boom on the other hand hits that threshold where its problems are sufficiently amusing enough to become a sort of feature. The glitches I've encountered are usually more hilarious than malicious.

You take that back Godzilla Destroy All Monsters Melee is a great game.
