this is bullshit. you can't ground the avatar.

That was a pretty fun episode.
So guess we now know what gets Toph involved in the plot again. Bryke going full avatar on us.
Loving the sideplot with Varrick and Bolin and i'm really glad it wasn't concluded in just one episode as I initially feared. Should make for a fun side plot seeing Varrick and Bolin's adventures back to Republic City. The way Varrick got past the checkpoint was great.

Korra's part of the story was pretty fun also after they got all the angsty stuff out of the way. No surprise that Wu tried to hit on Korra.
Funniest part of the episode has to be Mako's grandmothers reaction to Wu.
Also a surprising amount of action in this episode both of the main fights were great. They utilized Varrick pretty well during the fight.

Cute little moment.

Wtf so Korrasami?

Really good episode
and of course we get more Korrasami bait.

The Varrick/Bolin scenes were great and Bolin wasn't a total douche this time. That was a really nice change. One thing that bugged me though was the spirit telepathy radar bullshit. The last thing we need is more spirit nonsense.

And another thing, did anyone else think that firebender looked like Wan?

Yeah he looked like a combination of Wan and Mako.

Yeah he looked like a combination of Wan and Mako.

Wait, I just realized he's voiced by Steven Blum. No wonder he's so familiar. He's basically a combination of Wan and Spike.

Lmao and both guys who voiced Wan are named Steven. wtf is going on.

Avatar: The Legend of Korra Book 4: Episode 7

Right and there it is, there is the grand fucking culmination of being trapped by your own writing. Before this episode Kuvira was a mere authoritarian general perceiving to pick up the broken splinters of her fractured nation by whatever means necessary. Certainly not a strictly speaking good person, especially with the business of brutally crushing dissent beneath an iron heel, but that kind of goes with the business of being a military dictator. The fact of the matter is Kuvira has been the leader who has been more or less in the right this whole season. Basically this is why they had to add the element of true modern fascism/Nazism to the mix in a truly haphazard way. We are now told that Kuvira is purging people of non Earth Empire origin because we need a reason to hate Kuvira. That is it, we have not been given a reason why Kuvira would want to do this, nor as she or Bittar expressed any prejudicial viewpoints and there were certainly opportunities to introduce those elements in more subtle ways. So, you know what, fuck your shitty writing, I am still cheering for The Great Uniter. Speaking of things that don't make sense, why the fuck would Kuvira need Prince Wu now, for any reason? Also, Korra and Asami are a couple, I don't care what anybody says, this has gone beyond shipteasing. It is very clear that the writing staff want these two to be a couple and are working as hard as they can to make that happen. Let me see, Verrick and Bolin need their own spin-off series. Finally, I am remembering just how much I hate Mako and how useless he is. Also, I think it is pretty clear that Mako is being kept around to be Prince Wu's love interest at this point. Well, as much as the word interest can work with Mako at any rate.

Oh shit! Toph is going to go ape shit (I hope) after this.

This is the reason to hate her? Instead of replacing the Earth kingdom's monarchy with a democracy she's opted for a military junta. She's a power hungry dictator who isn't fit to rule.

Why would democracy ever factor into the equation? It is virtually nonexistent political system in the world of Avatar. Of course she would opt for the junta because she is more fit to rule then the weak Prince Wu. The fact of the matter is the Earth Empire needs Kuvira as leader or else it is back to chaos and banditry again. This is one of those things that the writers really failed to address.

Republic City has a democratically elected President, so yes... democracy does exist in the Avatar universe. What she could have done was unite the Earth kingdom and then establish a democratically elected government.

But she's nuts and drunk on power which has resulted in her trying to create WMDs. And god knows what she's going to do with those.

Very enjoyable ep.

Overall, I think I'll be happy with Book 4, but the slow pace and single episode per week (kinda spoiled in this regard I'll admit) are not doing it any favours.

Still, least we have an endgame in sight now.

Namely the fact that Kuviria will blow everything the fuck UP if she doesn't get her way. Can't wait to see how Toph reacts next week.

I did say that, but one city on the planet does not make for a dominant political system and nobody seems to be talking about a Earth Democracy replacing the Empire. Kings, Lords and Chieftains are the ruling order of the day. Is the dictatorship so much better just because it is borne from a bloodline? At least Kuvira earned her power and prestige because uniting the massive Earth Kingdom was no small task and required the fire and the forge. Also, democracy does always take hold, the provinces probably would have gone their own way with a strong willed leader. What it comes down to is the need to make Kuvira the designated villain because we need to fill out the latter half of a season.

Okay, fella. People like you are why dictators have support in this world (and in that fictional one too).

At best Kuvira should be an interim leader that leads people in a time of struggle before stepping aside for a permanent system of governance, but she now believes that might makes right. Just wait until she decides to expand that Earth empire of hers.

In the Avatar world, when they use "city", I don't think they mean city in the sense that Westerners understand the word (something like an urbanized area), but rather in the Chinese sense of the word 市 (shì), which is not just the urbanized area but also a surrounding rural area which supports the urbanized area, with the rural area being many times bigger in size and often containing several other towns, villages, and even other small 'cities' in the Western sense of the word. 地级市 (dìjí shì) are used to denote particular areas in the way "county", or "state" might in Anglophone countries, and some of the Chinese 地级市 are huge, comparable in size to some of the smaller European nations. Republic City is probably not just the built-up capital we've seen, but also the far larger area which makes sense given the context of the maps we've seen and how big that area is. Assuming the Earth Empire is a China analogy, then the Republic City is probably a country roughly the size of say, Portugal, making the governance model it uses certainly one other countries might consider.

Yeah it should fun seeing how Toph reacts. Wonder if they'll have them fight straight away because I kinda want to see what Toph/Kuvria fight looks like now.

You may want to chill out there because you may have crossed a few lines with your words. Political systems and situations are complex affairs and I will commend this season for having such complexity, maybe too complex for a series aimed at children.

Crossed a few lines? What I'm saying is only based on things you've said in this thread.

In my opinion people who desire power should never be given it, especially when it is total control of the military. When that happens they never give it up and only end up wanting more and more.

Case in point: Kuvira's desire for WMD. She has finished uniting the Earth kingdom so she should have no need for better weapons but yet she's adamant about it. Why? Because - I suspect - she wants to "unite" more than the earth kingdom under her rule.

The problem with the Democracy angle is at no point was it ever considered. It boiled down to three choices, Kuvira and Military Empire, Prince Wu and a weak sovereign manipulated by court ministers or nobody and leave the kingdom to be at the mercy of warlords, bandits and criminals. This is has been my point all along, Kuvira is not a good choice so much as the best choice given the options.

neither did Korra

goddamn what is wrong with you people

this shit is like going "Aang didn't sit around doing nothing in a wheelchair for several months"

that shit was done TO her, not BY her

goddamn

hey guys Katara's mom is the worst parent in the whole franchise because she just left her kids all alone
I am half joking here. But only half. I do indeed believe that Korra handled the role handed to her very badly. She was decent against Amon, but from everything from season 2 on was enabled by her and could've be avoided by her.

Unalaq is pretty clear. She just trusted this extremely hostile plan and opened the spirit portals. Then she left the Spirit World connected with no idea what this could do or what could be won. Just "lol lets see what happens". It was nice of the problem between Republic City and the Spirit World to solve itself off-screen after Korra failed to solve it and it was so nice that it produced airbenders for Tenzin. Including Zaheer (which wasn't really her fault, but it's the next part of the chain of her acting without thinking). And this lead of course to Su don't want to move her ass from Zaofu, because her not putting her philosophy over us was more important than preventing civil wars and bloodshed, which lead to Kuvira rising. The connection would've also not severed if she just didn't help Unalaq.

Toph VS Kuvira in the next episode. Calling it now.
Toph beats Kuvira and is then stabbed in the back by her granddaughter when she hugs her. Revealing that Kuvira was not only a threat to the world and it's people, but also to the Red Lotus who now, once again rise to glory.

Ha you'll never let go of evil Opal will ya Chariot. I'm expecting Baatar the chump he is to backstab Toph in the next episode.
