Sonic Boom |OT| Sonic 2014

The rings bit still blows my mind. It's basically a Sonic tradition. Hell, it's a PLATFORMER tradition.

How do you fuck that up?!
To be fair it was the same in Colours and I think Generations. The difference is that those games didn't really have bullshit deaths and you lost less lives in general so it wasn't an issue.

It blows my mind even more that they did exactly the same to Sonic Lost World.

No lives at first for 100 rings. And then patched it in.

I think this is the most fair review I've seen so far. He doesn't take the glitches into account as you usually have to go out of their way to make them.He mostly focuses on the average "non-Sonic" gameplay and the story and characters.

I do have to agree that for a new take on the Sonic franchise, characters should have been reintroduced properly (that goes for the TV show too) and it's obvious chunks of story were taken out to make room for launch.Sonic goes from team player to acting like an ego maniac for one scene and it's obvious this is the first time Sticks has met the group as she is more savage and talks like Tarzan.

Good review, the game is just meh, and the genericness kind of hurts the game so much that it makes me say "Other games do it better, so why not play those instead?" Sometimes a broken and embarrassing game like 06 is more fun to play and watch because of how bad it is, at least with that game, they were trying to do something different, it just failed miserably.

I uploaded some screenshots of glitches I found

Also, visuals take a pretty big hit when playing in co-op.

edit: The pics that have only Knuckles are me using the super hop to go into un loaded areas. It's pretty easy to replicate although it's not exactly BRB's fault

Woah, that's insane. Why would they do such a thing? What could possibly be so graphically intensive about co-op that they have to shit up the game's visuals like this?

Game has a tough time keeping 30fps on its own anyway. I can imagine having to render the game twice, both on the TV and on the gamepad, doesn't help things out.

Are you kidding? The game has to drawn to the TV and the WiiU gamepad. That's a huge extra strain placed on the system. It's much more demanding that regular split-screen even.

Considering the game has a terrible frame-rate in single player this shouldn't be surprising.

- Allow the Wisps to be controlled the traditional way without motion controls
- 100 Rings gives you a life
- More lives when you Continue
- Fixed some glitches

I recall it doing more, but I keep forgetting. Overall it was a godsend for the game.
Hmm, I might have to replay it now. Those things were quite frustrating especially towards the end.

It's a shame they can't just eliminate the Deadly Six bits too - the stages where they insult Sonic the whole time are worse as a result of this. Boss fights should not be included in the normal stages.

Im finding that to not be the case. There hasnt been a speed section yet where something like this doesnt happen for me:

I mean if youre lucking out and not finding glitches cool, but acting like its not fair to criticize the game for them because if you're not finding it means you have to be going out of your way is super disingenuous

Aaaaaah OK, I thought the game's co-op was single screen, didn't know it was two separate views. That makes sense now.

I still haven't played this, but I've watched more of the cutscenes on YouTube and I'm starting to feel almost bad for the game. Don't get me wrong, I don't think it looks very fun, but the cutscenes seem largely entertaining (though I haven't watched enough to have an impression of the overall story). There is a Sonic game with cutscenes that aren't terrible. That feels somewhat significant and it's a bummer that it's lost in everyone piling on the game. (Which again does look to be kind of crap.)

Edit: Been watching some more straight-through videos... yeah, I might be scaling back my statement a little bit. But I still hold that some individual cutscenes have a ton of personality. The Giant Bomb QL... "Bounce pad!" Man does this look horrible

I think the most depressing thing about this game that since this is a Sonic game so it will still end up selling better than The Wonderful 101, Bayo 2. And it wouldn't surprise me if it ends up doing better than Splatoon or Xenoblade X either.

So I just finished Rise of Lyric. I have to say that was one of the most polished early access games I've ever played :P.

The hard mode is incredibly basic, just a slight health and damage increase for the enemies. This is made completely trivial by the fact that death is worthless in this game, and by the time I had beaten the game I had bought the ability that makes me respawn with 100 rings so even if there was a consequence to dying it would never happen.

I know I said I'd 100% the game, but that was before I knew they put princess crowns in the auto run segments. Normally this wouldn't be that bad but when you combine the terrible camera angle on some of them with the horrendous framerate it makes it damn near impossible to tell when you're supposed to jump to activate the hidden paths.

The thing that really saddens me about this game is that I can see potential in it. In better hands I think this could have been really fun.

I'm going to start Shattered Crystal tomorrow. Please don't let me down Sanzaru.

What does one have to say after 20 years?

Memories of jumping, running and playing.

But sadly your new games confirm our fears

Sega, your owner, knows you aren't well and insists on staying

I remember a hedgehog stylish and quick

And traveling the world on adventures we had

But the new games are terrible and make me sick.

You made us young kids happy

We ran along Green Hills and Chemical Plants

But your new games are quite crappy

Sadly it seems Sega only listens to the sycophants

They love a company that puts you through the ringer.

We long for the days where we played long past

But Sega's treatment of you is quite the stinger.

We look on with our jaws dropped and aghast

Maybe its time to call it quits

The glitches in Sonic Boom make me wince

Big Red made a game that gives us the shits.

Its time to let go. Goodnight Sweet Prince

Really? I feel like Sonic games haven't been selling well recently. Bayonetta 2 has sold more than Sonic Lost World according to VG Chartz.

Lost World was pretty polarizing. IMO, it's the worst 3D Sonic ever made.

You're nuts. Sonic '06 is infinitely worse than Lost World. Lost World is at least better than even Sonic Heroes. The fact that Sonic doesn't slip everywhere and you have control over him makes it way more competent than Heroes by far.

The worst 3D Sonics are Shadow, Sonic '06, and Black Knight. You have to be nuts to think Lost World, with its aesthetics, good level design for at least half of the game, and actual control over Sonic himself is worse than the drab Shadow the Hedgehog, the glitchy and practically complete joke that was Sonic '06, and the game that gives Sonic a freaking sword as its main selling point in Black Knight.

You have to be ignoring all the good things Lost World has in it in order to make that claim. I can't believe you actually think it's worse than Shadow the Hedgehog, let alone Sonic '06.

That's false so far. Bayo 2 has sold over 66K in its first month. Lost World was nearing 100K. Bayo 2 opened a lot stronger for sure though.

A poem poem that reveals more than it should
I think this is the point in our lives where we need to understand that things might not be for us anymore and move on. And not have formal death requests because we don't like a thing, not considering the people who actually do because doing that is kind of childish.

I finished the game. Theres moments near the end that for a few minutes actually evoke a fairly fun albeit run of the mill PS2-era platformer, and I wish more of the game operated on that level. Shockingly theres very little platforming in 3D space compared to the other types of gameplay.

Its just overall too bland of a game even if it didnt have all of the glitches and framerate dips. Nothing really fundamentally changes about the brawling, or how youre challenged on each characters specific power. Theres never a platforming moment that made me go "Oh thats pretty clever!" that usually endears me to middling platformers like the recent Pac Mans, Crash Mind Over Mutant or Epic Mickey. Hell even Sonic Lost World a lot of cool ideas.

People seem to dig Shattered Crystal, I might give that a shot when Ive got less to play on the 3DS.

and the game that gives Sonic a freaking sword as its main selling point in Black Knight.

That really isn't enough of a criticism by itself, you know.

Actually, I think Black Knight is leaps and bounds above Secret Rings, but I think I'm in the minority on that.

Hunh. Guess I have been lucking out. I've seen another guy on Miiverse who seems to be having just as bad a time as you.

One odd glitch that came up twice. I'd smash a boulder as Knuckles and hear Amy shout "Nice job, Perci!" Perci being an girl NPC character you meet.

Just got to the underwater area with Sonic and Amy. I've played this portion at several trade shows and the lighting is a fair amount different here. I'm also noticing that scenes must have been left on the cutting room floor.Sonic is suddenly an ego maniac for a short time, Sticks talks like some kind of Tarzan savage and only Sonic and Tails have the water running ability. In hub worlds, you can hear Amy and Knuckles drowning. There must have been a level where Knuckles and Amy got the ability that got cut, hence they never have it in the hub worlds. From what I've heard, Shadow only has one scene where he fights Sonic and Tails for no good reason and is never heard from again. Plus this was SUPPOSED to be a prequel story introducing the cast.

I hope sometime down the line, we find out what really happened in the development of this game.

Well, one good thing I found about collecting rings past 100 is that they contribute to unlocking the concept art.

It still seems weird to me that different people running the same software on the same hardware/OS can have drastically different experiences with bugs and glitches. I don't know anything about programming though, I'm sure it makes sense to those that do.

I've completed the game now and I didn't run into very many glitches either. I did see a few but never fell through the world, not even on a speed section. I did clip into the walls some during the water running areas but was able to get back out.

I did encounter 2 big ones. Once while water running I got stuck under the water and couldn't get back out. I though I was going to have to reload but then tried switching characters and that popped me back to the surface.

In another part I died (on purpose to get a collectible I missed) and it spawned me outside of a door that opened for me the first time but was now stuck shut. That time I did have to reload the game and replay the previous 5 minutes or so.

The game is a technical mess and should not have shipped in this state, but I still enjoyed my time with it more or less.

It kind of reminds me of how some people who played Skyward Sword had problems with the Motion Plus controls while others had no problems at all. Although I guess in that case you have to take into account your general environment which can affect how well the Motion Plus works.

Watched someone play this all last night. My god it was bad. Just technical issues everywhere and the game seems completely unfinished. An absolute pile of crap and I would NOT recommend to anyone.

Co-op sacrifices graphics and cuts the framerate!? Maximum ring upgrade NEEDS THE 3DS VERSION TO UNLOCK!?

WHAAAAAAT!?

To be fair, Hyrule Warriors co-op also made the framerate inconsistent and turned down the resolution. Not to the extent of Boom though which is already running pretty badly.

Black Knight still kills me

Like, Secret Rings was a decent idea

I'm also noticing that scenes must have been left on the cutting room floor. Sonic is suddenly an ego maniac for a short time...

I noticed this too, the part with Sonic being an asshole was pretty cool. And kind of sad, because if they'd actually stuck with it instead of dropping the idea after a few scenes it could have really gone somewhere interesting.

Well thats a shame, I was hoping the extreme difficulty might be worthwile trying. I assume you just start from scratch? You don't get to keep any of the things you unlocked from your first playthrough?

There was nothing wrong with giving Sonic a sword. A traditional Sonic game with high sped sword combat? Awesome!

Problem was that it was an on-rails beat-them-up that was also a terrible game.

I hate this new Boom Sonic BECAUSE he's such an asshole. He is really unlikable. Like, ever since Sonic Colors, Sonic’s attitude and cockiness has really raised up, but he was still Sonic. But THIS Sonic….he’s just a dick. I hardly ever see him smile, he speaks in a very monotone and bored voice, and he treats everyone around him like they’re a bunch of idiots, even his friends. That’s not Sonic! This doesn't just apply to the games, but the TV show too.

How long did it take you to beat? Is it true the game starts truly breaking down at a round the half-way point?

Seeing if I can beat it tonight.

You keep everything. It's an option you toggle in the pause menu.

I'm pretty sure it took me around 6-8 hours. I'll check the play log and post my exact time the next time I turn on my Wii U. Unfortunately yes the game started to break down around the time I made it too the second hub world. I started to encounter way more glitches including some that forced me to exit the game and reload my save.

Does anyone know how to do the "go back in time and find young Tucker" mission? Or do i need to wait to do it?

He's in a secret room in the level where you get the map. IIRC the entrance is in the same room where sonic mentions that they have to get to the security room.
