We have to highly disagree on the 'became a douche' with Opal part because we have different ideas of characterization here. But the movie plot in book 2 I agree in.

Yeah we've had this discussion before, and I still don't agree with you. If you want to argue this scene doesn't define who he is, then that is fine. I'm not trying to argue it is. However, in a show where we don't get a lot of screen time for Bolin, this was just another scene that rubbed me the wrong way with his behavior. Which was a major shift from Book 1 Bolin.

The way he talked about Opal was totally douchey. And his cocky/arrogance was a carry over from the mover plot (which made him a douche bro). So even if you want to argue I'm reading too much into the scene, at least for me it's the overall context for the character that bugs me and where they took the character.

I was ready for Mako to be the next Zuko way back when LoK was announced.

He never even came halfway floe.

All side characters in this show (save for Tenzin/Lin) are a waste of potential. To be clear, I'm not trying to argue that Mako is a great character. He's not. He'll always be weighed down by his bland personality and the writers not knowing what to do with him (although, they don't know what to do with most of the characters on this show). However, I look at Mako in Book 1, and I see them taking steps to correct the characters problems. Even if it only slightly moved him in the right direction, they did move him.

Bolin on the other hand, had a major shift to the wrong direction. And I'll never understand why they took one of the best side characters from Book 1, and did what they did to him.

Granted, that cocky/douchey behavior was not who he was for the majority of Book 3. But he was also extremely annoying and obnoxious for the rest of it.

So far in Book 4 Bolin is pretty great. I'm liking his side plot (I think, they could have done a bit more with him with regards to believing in Kuvira and being at odds with the others about his beliefs, but whatever). I'm kind of weary how he will be once he's back with Team Avatar. But I can say Book 4 Bolin has so far been a major step up.

That time jump did him good.

The sad thing is that the cast itself works the best when they're not even around each other except for Korra with Asami and Bolin with Mako, though Bolin with Asami isn't that bad either; he's just like her idiot little brother or something. The rest of the time they just act like wounded bitter ass people with no chemistry together.

It was still just as awkward of a start. Suki met Sokka in the episode Sokka was being an extremely sexist jerk, and when he apologized at the end she kisses him. Then like a whole season if not more passes by before they see each other again and by that point Sokka had loved and lost another girl. And the first thing they do when they see each other is basically kiss again. Then they're basically an item from that point onwards.

They also had 20 episodes per season. They could afford to have episodes only about a "side" adventure. They had a much better idea and pacing then. Korra has had 7 episodes so far this season with little happening in the over-all plot to get shit started.

The difference between Bolin and Opal is that the writers didn't have the time. They shat on Bolin's love life for 2 straight seasons. Then season 3 they introduced Opal but the situation they wrote her in was similar to Suki that they couldn't really afford to stay there for too long so Bolin could have his romance. Heck, their courtship was similar with Bolin acting like a jerk and then apologizing. They even have the "rescue" episode in the finale, though the difference is that it was a whole crew instead of just two folks.

The difference between Asami and Mako is that we can infer that their break-up occurred in between S1 and S2 so that's not really relevant. Asami didn't know his final decision till after all of that happened. They even reference this in S3 when they're talking about all that happened in S2. There hasn't been a major time skip to infer that Opal and Bolin are broken up

Clearly, Korami is happening, obviously. Someone colored in Korra's cheeks when Asami complimented her hair. There's no denying it anymore. But, who know's if upper Nic exec will have that happen (As example; Bubline has been all but confirmed in the adventure time canon). My bet, is the last episode is a big fuck you, and it's a weird threeway pillow fort implying that all three are shacking up. Literally all the fans are happy, and not happy at the same time. It's an amazing way to end what has been a weird trainwreck of a show.

Still hanging out and spending a ton of time together. But yeahhhhhh....
