He's just there at this point so Jinora has someone to kiss in the finale. Should have given all that Kai time to Jinora to develop her a bit more.
Or Kuvira. Should've had her join the gang when they went on the hunt for Aiwei. She would've had some screen time and actually be a person that they trusted. This way so when she goes goose stepping around the earth empire people actually have a dilemma when it comes to actually fighting her. But nope we got Kai, which is sad cause I actually like Kai. He pulled his bullshit around at the end, but if he's not even integral to the plot this season why even conceptualize him to begin with.
They really should've pared it down a bit from ATLA but they really didn't. Give it a core group and focus on that. It really shouldn't have stretched beyond the additions of the kids, Tenzin and Lin with Su Yin being a stretch, but my god...there's just so much wasted potential with a lot of the characters in this show, I like a lot of them too.
