Fighting Games Weekly | Nov 17-23 | Settle it in Smash

Interview with SFII's producer - now he's behind Monster Strike - includes why he never wants to go back to consoles.

http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/...Is_producer_will_never_return_to_consoles.php

I see no reason for him to go back to consoles either... they're on the verge of death and soon there'll be no reason own one instead of a PC. I'm sure Sony understands this situation and hence they've invested in Gaikai to probably become a game streaming service rather than hardware manufacturer.

No way.

Arent they doing better than ever?

My metric for the console business success is the amount of diversity and health it shows. There is barely any room anymore for creativity and diversity for middleware games to exist.

Just look at the current situation... when was the last time any company tried to make a new 3D Fighting game IP for example? Because of how risk averse the console market is I don't think this is sustainable at all. Like Okamato says... only thing that can survive in the market now is sequels, sequels, more sequels, and the occasional new IP with the safest design choices & no risks.

That's not on the verge of death. It just means that you don't want to play on consoles, lol.

And no one made a new 3D Fighting Game IP because they sell like shit for the most part and most developers take forever to nail it now.

It depends how you define the market. PS4/XB1 combined are off to a better start than PS360 and AAA software is similar. But PS4/XB1/Wii U is not shaping up to be as big a market as PS3/360/Wii. Part of the Wii market segment has migrated elsewhere and that's not coming back.

AAA is doing better than ever. The big 3 independent publishers seem to be as solid as they've ever been. Indie titles are strong. There's a lot to play. But the middle market, the mid-budget, B-tier games are almost dead. It's Indie or AAA with not as much as before in between (and what is happening in that space is happening in handheld).

And obviously if you shift market from Western markets to Japan then it's a different story entirely.

You can apply that logic to every single genre. For the amount of adventure games in the market, what percent of them sell like shit? Probably even more so than 3D Fighting games.

In the current console market it's pretty much guaranteed we'll never see anything like a Boody Roar, SFEX, or even a KOF Maximum Impact ever again... and it sucks.

EDIT: And my "verge of death" statement was clearly hyperbole, basically it's in a rapid state of regression for me. And in my opinion I don't anticipate the current big companies to stay in this market for that much longer.

I disagree mightily. He can stay on mobile if it makes him happy and likes that business model.

Yoooo Guilty Gear XRD !

Part 3: In Network Mode, you can designate a default character to be automatically selected in matches, bypassing character select and letting you get to the match faster.

If this works for rematches this will be the game of the forever even more than it already is.

What percent of them aren't shit adventure games though? Good stuff will sell for the most part. It may sell millions and millions like some genres but that's a different problem.

Bloody Roar was shit from the get go and it didn't get much better and neither did its sales. SFEX wasn't popular to begin with but it still got 3-4 games. and KOF Max Impact 2 came out about 8 years ago, not too long in console time. Also, SNK apparently trademarked a new Maximum Impact title as I recall.

After reading this tweet, I can only hope for the future.

After Yamanaka's side comments earlier in the year, and the transition of ASW titles to Steam... the time has come for Xrd to come to PC
2 years after its console release.

B-tier is massively not dead. Paradox, SEGA, and Stardock are doing quite well. Then you have games like AOW3.

To me, B-tier works best on PC in enthusiast genres.

Would Capcom or ASW be considered B-tier?

I do think fighters would do well on PC if they got treated properly. MKX is going to be a nice litmus test.

So I decided to rewatch the Justin v Yipes comeback.

Props to whoever made that video, it never occurred to me before but the intro track is totally some Pizzicato Five. Every so often FGC has some awesome taste in music. That's up there with the EVO trailer that uses Saul Williams
Man I totally forgot about that, List of Demands was such a great song for that. FGC seems to dig a lot of trip hop and instrumental beats....I love them too but its weird how prevalent that genre is. Could be our similar ages, could be the blazgreen....

ArcSys is the best.

Meanwhile elsewhere "when will fighting games have good online features and netcode!?"
The features seem good, but regarding the net code... iwannaseethereceipts.gif. Although showing the actual input delay is a real improvement (and one I'm a bit surprised Sony greenlit).

It's difficult to slot Japanese companies into a Western console market analysis, and if you're analyzing the health of home consoles as anything other than deeply troubled it's implicitly a Western market analysis. Though it's undeniable that Capcom (like Square Enix) has had AAA aspirations in the budgets, team size and sales expectations for many of their recent console games, Ultra's shoestring notwithstanding.

Capcom aside, I think the healthy Japanese pubs have adapted to market realities with the budgets and sale expectations their titles now warrant. So, for example, Tekken 7 may be disappointing to people but its unrealistic to expect it to be revolutionary *and* have realistic budgets, since the market for the game is just small comparatively. Also Nintendo apparently mastered budget wizardry because they are now profitable again despite a declining user base overall (3DS compared to DS) and tiny install base for the Wii U.

When was the last time FGW could be excited for pre-loading like the wider world of GAF does every so often? Smash is up for pre-load now. :)

Basically regarding Monster Strike they have produced something new that will guarantee them a lot of profit and support. Of course other companies will try to copy their game and there may be a market segmentation. But for the first years, success is guaranteed.

Just like it happened with SFII in the 90s. It was something new that cought video games by storm, just like Virtua Fighter and Doom. Sequels, new 2D and 3D fighters and clones segregated the initial market.

Fighters faced a crisis not because there was any lack of ideas, but due to the demise of arcades in the West, which led a lot of companies to shift their focus to consoles. This meant that fighters had to change for a new market and not all could make the transition.

Is Makoto a grappler? She have a bad throw(~9 frames, no throw invincibility, ex is 5 with armor, all versions have bad range compared to proper grapplers). But she get most of her damage from either her grapp or people being too terrified of her grapp to block.

Also, flame Iori in KoFXIII can dish out more damage after his command grap than any other grappler in the game, execution aside, if you get grapped by him, you die. Is he a grappler?

I'd just say KOF XIII basically has no grapplers. Some characters just happen to have command grabs.

Cool KLK avatar, Messiah.
ArcSys is the best.

They'll be the best when they make PC ports of games that use Unreal Engine 3 and without having the rest of the world's metagame behind that of the Japanese for months at a time.

Edit: Also, lol @ the quote.

What makes me mad is UNIEL getting ported on PS3 instead of PC. The guys at french bread wanted to make it on Steam but they ended on PS3. Now the game is dead online after a few month and it makes me mad.

I don't like to play on consoles anymore except for a few games. All multiplayer online games I have are on PC where I can speak on skype/mumble with a friend, read something when waiting my turn in a lobby. I can't stand being stuck with a fucking PS3 system I don't even use anymore outside of fighting games a few times a month.

I'm probably in the minority, but I can't get excited for preloading.
Even if I preload a game and it's playable at midnight, I can't really stay up and play it.
No matter what, I still have to get up early for work the next day.
:/

I'm being somewhat tongue in cheek, but there is something kind of fun about it, like a Christmas present (though in the case of Smash, I'm getting the bundle so).

Of course on PC it's more fun because VPN shenanigans let you open the presents early.

It's easier to just let it go. I did and I just make time for whatever fighters I have in my library when I'm not on some other steam game.

Didn't help my posting frequency in here, though. That is for sure.

Kof grapples cheat. They can combo into their grabs like they're any other special move

Since reviewing fighting games for a pro website is one my jobs, I can't let it go. :/
