That's the problem. It makes no sense. Since Korra and Mako broke up on clear terms of "not meant for each other," there has been no progress in their relationship for more than three years. In fact, Korra got far closer to Asami in the interim.
I kinda want Makorra to happen just to see how they justify it, but it's nigh impossible to do so, which means that if Mike and Bryan go that route, they truly just don't care. And they will have cruelly teased the fanbase with something far greater, which adds insult to injury.

Part of it is they reached "and now what" portion of the narrative. Kuvira has basically achieved all of her goals, the Earth Empire is united under her iron fist and she has gotten her revenge, with fewer then expected losses to boot. The only thing they got left is the weapons program that is being developed for reasons undisclosed and the story has to wait until that threat is ready. Therefore and now what Legend of Korra? Oh, bloody great, a recap episode.

I actually haven't seen that season much, but seasons 1 & 2 were incredible. First JoJo is my favorite, which I understand is a somewhat unpopular opinion.
