Nvidia Launches GTX 980 And GTX 970 "Maxwell" Graphics Cards ($549 & $329)

Any idea when the 980ti is dropping?

I really want to upgrade but can't be dealing with the 4gb vram on these cards. I need more.

I don't think there will be a 980Ti. The 980 is a fully unlocked Maxwell.

There are rumors of a Titan replacement, but expect to shell out a thousand bucks for it.

not even rumors yet, as far as I know. There may be a 8GB 980, but it may not be a 980 ti though. there was no 680 ti either, right?

Correct. We just had the 680 and the 690 at the top of the line.

If there is an 8GB 980 we won't see it for a long time. Makes more sense for Nvidia to keep churning out 4GB cards.

So I am thinking about finally replacing my good old GTX 460 with a GTX 970. I do have two concerns:

- I have this PSU: http://www.game-debate.com/psu/index.php?ps_id=1161&psu=Chieftec CTG-500-80P will that be enough to power the card?

-My CPU is a i7 870 @ 2,93 ghz. It is also quite old, will this bottleneck a 970 in most games?

I'd replace that PSU. It's not a great quality unit and I'd not risk a brand new 970 on it just in case. Whilst it has obviously powered your 460 fine and likely would the 970 too, I'd still not like to risk it.

Your CPU is still a solid one, overclock it and it'll be fine.

You mean replace the PSU, obv?

I recently bought an asus gtx970 strix replacing a gtx280 and my cpu is a Q9550 running @ 2.8. I ran ac unity yesterday and got solid 35-40 fps with ultra settings with a few drops. If you're willing to upgrade the cpu I would say wait and try the new card. You can always upgrade later if you're not satisfied with the performance.

What are some semi-recent (last four/five years) games that these cards can run maxed (not counting AA) in 4k 60fps? The few I've tried get like 5fps in 4k and are hard to keep 60fps in 2k.

Games tested so far on 980:
Metro 2033 - can't even do 2k at more than ~30fps very high

Batman AC - can do 2k at 60fps, though adding AA options brings it down. 4k with no AA can do 30fps.

The Evil Within - can almost do 30fps constant at 4k

Assasin's Creed Unity - lol at 4k, maybe 30fps at 2k...maybe.

The Witcher 1 - 60fps at 4k but text is ridiculously small and unplayable.

Witcher 2 - 45-60 fps at 4k and everything on Ultra with my 970
Skyrim - 60fps at 4k and everything as high as it can go (no mods)

Those are really the only other games I've messed around with down sampling since I got my card. I've been struggling to hit 60fps with everything maxed at 1080p with most new games (which I'm perfectly fine with :P)

GAF, I am scared. I just updated the BIOS on my MSI GTX 980 TF. I uninstalled the Nvidia graphics drivers as the instructions stated and I started the BIOS update process. as soon as I started the process the screen went grey and my computer has been unresponsive for about 5 minutes. what should I do?

Take off the CMOS battery on your motherboard for a few minutes then put it back in.It will reset your motherboard's settings.

If you have a modern motherboard or simply a gaming-oriented motherboard, refer to your motherboard manual for instructions on how to reset the CMOS contents.

But before you do that - is your PC otherwise responsive? Can you reset and boot back into the OS?

Just ordered a 970 the other night. What are some games to try out to see what it is capable of? Right now I have Far Cry 3, Bioshock Infinite, Divinity OS, Sleeping Dogs, and some Total War games ready to go on steam. Also have WoW and D3 which I'm expecting to see some nice framerate jumps in. I also guess I can go nuts with Skyrim and enable all those crazy graphics mods and still play on ultra with a really high framerate.

Going from a 560ti to the 970. My 560 has been struggling to keep up lately. When I picked up Far Cry 3 the other day and Ultra was running at like 25 fps, I then knew it was time. My 560 served me well. It will be remembered fondly like my 8800 and 4870. The fan on it is so loud lately, it's damaged in some way. Time to put her to rest.

Realized I had to disable the driver itself from device manager. Everything is all good now.

Amazon got some MSI 970s in stock so I lucked out and got my return from them. Hopefully the replacement doesn't have the same fan issue

I just got an EVGA 970 SC ACX2.0 and it is hitting around 75c while playing Dragon Age. I assume this is from the lower noise fan stuff they have for the card but should I be concerned or look into making a custom fan profile in Afterburner?

I wouldn't sweat it.

Got my new GTX 970 Superclocked installed and it's awesome! I'm wondering if some of my benchmarks should be higher though. I'll have to run them again and take some screenshots and post them so I can get some input from you all.

Also, I haven't used an nVidia card for a long time so I'm used to the ATI Catalyst Control Center, but where can I monitor the temperature/fan speed/overclock settings for the 970? With the ATI cards, I could change all that stuff right from the Catalyst Control Center, and I'm not seeing anything like that with the GeForce panels.

There are a bunch of 3rd party programs you can use. Personally, I like MSI afterburner as it can do overclocking, fans, screenshots, video, and has a pretty good on screen display that you can customize to practically tell you anything you want.

Thanks for the tip on MSI Afterburner. I also just read an article over at PCGamer and they seemed to like the EVGA PrecisionX software. I might try them both.

Also, I had to do a search on YouTube and watch the LinusTechTips video so I could see what coil whine actually was since I'd never run across it with my old Radeon 5850. So far I haven't experienced any coil whine at all on the new card. Is it something that happens over time or does it usually manifest pretty quickly?

As others have advised, that's totally within the safe range for the card.

I've got the same card, and had a similar heat situation when I first got it. Did some tinkering and finally optimized the airflow in my case, leading to the temps being much more inline with what others are seeing.

I also made a custom fan profile that leaves it on 5% instead of silent, which keeps it a fair amount cooler for longer.

Just play your games and don't look for it. If you look for it and find it, you will never unhear it. :)

I'm holding out for a 6GB + version.

My current overclocked 280x at 3GB should suffice for another couple years.

The coil whine in my new 970 is driving me insane. =(

:( I've been hearing more of the low fps buzz from my new EVGA 970 FTW too :( It's the reason I RMA'd the ASUS. At least it's not as annoying as the ASUS was.

Same with my 970 Gigabyte G1 Gaming

This is a bit alarming.

Coil whine across 3 well regarded brands?

I got my G1 970 right after they launched and it's quiet as can be. The only exception being if something is running at 300+ fps then it will whine a little. Haven't bothered trying to lock the framerate at 144 yet.

I've had 3 of the MSI 970s (one of them is the one I kept and is the Gold version), but all have been silent with no coil whine at all.

I got my G1 970 from Newegg today! No coil whine to report so far. The thing just barely fits into my case though; I had to angle the back end of it into the drive bay, so it sticks part of the way in there now. Tight squeeze compared to my 770.

Plan to get an optimal overclock worked out when I have a little more time tonight.

This is the card I'm thinking of going with. The thing is massive though lol.

10700 with an overclocked Zotac? This seems low to me :|
Oh sorry that was the combined score. I'll check tonight to see what the GPU only portion was. I'm guessing you were getting good and correct GPU scores, and somehow glitched CPU. I thought nearly 11000 combined was pretty good since I only have an i7 Bloomfield.

I'm seeing multiple In Stock availability on Amazon from different brands (Gigabyte, MSI, etc)

Anyone know if supply of these on Amazon is legit or are orders still delayed a lot??

It should be good. I'm seeing a lot of stuff in stock on Newegg too.

Just out of curiosity, for comparison's sake:

My video card is almost 4 years old... tempted to get something new and fancy. :P

I bought a card direct from Amazon on Tuesday with no issues. I had to get the SC version because it was all they had but I was able to get one at least.

My current overclock on the G1 970 is +110 core and +600 memory. The core can maybe get more if I keep going, but the memory was definitely giving me graphics glitches around +700, so I dropped it back until I feel like trying again to nail it down to its exact limit.

1500mhz core isn't too shabby, yeah?

Is this with extra voltage?

Without upping the voltage I was able to get about +130 - 140 on the core but only +370ish on the mem clock before it crashed in Unigine Heaven.

The core passed Heaven at +175 with no artifacts but crashes in BF4 and Far Cry 4. I'm back to factory OC at the moment until I get a chance to test it at something like +130 core and +250 mem which I'm hoping will be stable.

Temps never got above 62ish C.

I'm a amateur at this stuff. Anyone got any tips on a good workflow for overclocking these? I used a 670 guide that I found on overclockers or guru3d or something.

Stock voltage. I will probably keep pushing the core clock to see how far it can go and be 100% reliable.

8137 -> 11317 isn't too bad after changing only a single part.
