I just tested it for you, and I was able to start up the Wii U, select my Mii, switch the screen to go to the game selection menu, select Smash Wii U, then you have to hold the Wii Remote sideways, and use the D-Pad and 1 and 2 buttons, like for NES games. I didn't actually do a battle, but it's an option to use the Wii Remote sideways to fight.

I was able to start the game and navigate the menu (and you can fight) with just the Wii Remote. Hope that helps! Now I'll start the game in earnest.
