I might be making this up, but i seem to remember Bryke saying something before the start of the season about having to make each episode a minute shorter due to a budget cut. I wonder if they ended up doing the clip show instead of that, or if they did both. Unless they were talking about season 3 at the time.

Lol okay

The verrick part was nice, especially the villain phone conference.XD Still through ugh even in bits of Verrick part I felt like skimming.
Shame they had to end up making a clip episode.:\

Nah that included Book 3 also and it was done to make more room for more adverts on Nick. Not the budget getting cut.
Due to Nickelodeon shortening our air times, the length of the shows decreased by a minute for Books 3 & 4. At first, I was concerned we wouldn’t be able to fit all the story we wanted into the shorter length, but it ended up working out fine.
Mike

Now this episode is due to the budget cut as recently outlined by Bryan on his tumblr.

Goddamn fanatics. I think the more time I spend in this thread the more my mind is contaminated by all the "ship" talk. Somehow I now find myself wanting Korra and Asami to connect. WTF? It was easier to avoid this in Naruto since basically all the characters got torpedoed by the writer and I just wanted Madara to kill the whole lot. lol

LOL, at least it was funny and actually had some good moments for Korra's development.

Loved the Mako parts and, well... The Terror Square and
Varrick's discription of Vaatu
:

“Zaheer is joined by Vaatu, the ultimate force of pure spirit evil in the universe, the biggest, meanest, scariest KITE that ever flew.”
— Varrick

Other great bits:

Zaheer: Hey it’s Zaheer

Vaatu: Oh, hey Zaheer

Zaheer: glad I could catch you at home (laughs)

Vaatu: Very funny. Like I could ever leave this stupid tree

Overall, thanks to Bryan's explanation of why this episode had to happen, I enjoyed it for what it was and it came out pretty good, have to give them credit.

10 minutes in and this episode is showcasing just how terrible the romance really was.

But nevermind that because Varrick stole the show. Epic is the only word to describe it.

Well it's a clip show but there where quite a few amusing moments through it. Varrick and his story was the highlight again.
The evil phone call conference was great. Love how they don't like Unalaq also.
Haha at giant spirit Bolin also.
They did a decent job all things considered after Nick basically forced this on them.

Haha yeah
it's a pretty nice summary also for why people hated Mako. Dang his Grandfather must have been really bad then.

What a shitty none episode. Wasting time on this instead of further developing the one dimensional shitty Kuvira. Yeah, i read the part about budget cuts, still there are many things to cover and few episodes are left.

You know, from a distance that Korra/Asami picture looked like the latter was giving the former a flower

Turns out it's tea. Not sure if it was intentional or not, but interesting nonetheless.

Episode was about as good as could be expected . Went in expecting Lion King 1 1/2 vibes where characters riff on past events and got it. The last 5 minutes or so was pretty funny, so all in all it wasn't bad.

Next week better be good though.

All things considered this turned out reasonably entertaining. I cracked up several times during the Mako and Varrick/Bolin parts, but i completely lost it at the conference call. Reminded me a bit of this in its absurdity:

Featuring the late great Mako.
I hope they turn it up to eleven for the last five episodes though.

That Toph fight better knock it out of the park if it does happen.

Avatar: The Legend of Korra Book 4:Episode 8:

Yea, it is a clip show so it is going to pretty much suck like a clip show does. I fast forwarded through most of the Mako stuff because you could not pay me to relive one of the worst romances I have ever witnessed.
I did catch the end and holy shit it seems like Mako is genuinely over those relationships of the past and I will give credit where it is due, congratulations on growing as a person. Now let ancient history be ancient history.
They just can't help themselves with Korra and Asami at this point, they may not be lovers yet, but it is clear that Asami is Korra's confidant at the very least.
but that being said her tale was pretty dull and I am not sure why she needed to explain this to Asami since she was there for most of it. Verrick and Bolin actually made this entertaining
by basically turning the whole shebang into Sealab 2021 and bonus cookies if you understand how that reference works.
Also, fuck you LoK, I don't believe you when it comes to the Equalists.

Lol a clips episode.

I understand why they did it. But come on. This fuckin season. Only 5 left in the entire series and it's been moving at a snails pace. I'm really worried to be quite honest.

Season has been in a coma and is flat lining.

This episode did remind me that no matter how bad things might get her we don't have to deal with horrid, horrid Mako romance anymore.

Sigh everyone had such hopes for Book 4 after how great Book 3 was and it looking like it may end on a limp note. I'm still holding out hope that they can up the ante in the next couple of episodes but this season as a whole has been slow going.
Here's hoping the Toph fight is great hopefully. Don't screw it up Bryke.

True enough. The less romance the better as it's always been one of the weaker aspects of LOK.

Wait you liked that? It didn't make any sense.

Now they are trashing themselves breaking the 4th wall. Oh my Jesus Christ F+

Aside from
Varrick's
portion, I hated the fact this was just a clip show episode.

Come on. We're 4-5 episodes to the end, don't wasted our time like this.

Reposting for visibility, but no excuses.

A few preemptive words about Episode 408, “Remembrances”…

In a couple hours the eighth chapter of Korra Book 4 will be released online, and I suppose, if you are none the wiser, a few minutes into it you will feel duped and yell at your screen, “Hey! This is a crummy clips episode!” And that is (almost) exactly what it is––except we all worked really hard to make sure at the very least it isn’t crummy. I’m here to explain why we ended up having to do one. Sometime around a year and a half ago we were similarly duped on a large scale. We got the news from the higher-ups that our Book 4 budget was getting slashed, almost to the tune of an entire episode’s budget. We had two options: 1) let go a significant number of crew members several weeks early, or 2) make a clips episode. We never considered the first option. We weren’t going to do that to our crew, and even if we were callous enough to do so, we never would have been able to finish the season without them. But having grown up on TV in the ’80s and ’90s, we all dread clips episodes, where characters sit around saying, “Remember that time when…” and leftover footage is reheated for no one’s enjoyment. Anyone who suffered through TNG’s “Shades of Gray” knows what I’m talking about.

Anime fans know this is a common occurrence in Japanese series as well. In fact, as Mike hung his head in disappointment at our fate, I remembered how one of my favorite anime series, Samurai Champloo, made what I thought was a really awesome and clever clips episode. They mixed about 5 minutes of new footage in with the old, and set up a context where the characters would be reflecting on past events while narrating over them, offering new insights or at least providing some humor. I pitched this angle to Mike and he agreed this was the best way to turn this big old lemon into some lemonade.

Back on Avatar, we had something that functioned as a sort of clips episode, though it was all new animation and really hard to make, Episode 317, “The Ember Island Players.” Our heroes went to a play where they saw themselves and their tales performed by actors on stage. It was simultaneously a reckoning for the characters before they headed into the denouement, and a lighthearted romp where we got to poke fun at our own show before things got really serious in the remaining episodes. Korra’s “Remembrances” ended up serving the same function, albeit with old footage instead of a newly animated play. There is about 5 minutes of new footage, wonderfully animated by Studio Mir, and a bunch of funny and touching narration from the characters. There are also some fun chibi heads and other treats in there to spice up the old footage.

What started out as a reluctant chore ended up being a really fun episode to make, and in the end I truly love it. Mike did an awesome job directing it and storyboarding all the chibi hilarity, as well as overseeing the wonderful script by Josh Hamilton, Katie Mattila, and Tim Hedrick. Joaquim Dos Santos, Ryu Ki Hyun, and Lauren Montgomery drew fantastic storyboards for the new footage (particularly Lauren’s insane Varrick posing). Lots of other folks worked their tails off on this one, namely Amaris Calvin, our animatics editor; Christie Tseng, our character designer who drew and colored all of the final chibi art; Matt Gadbois, our After Effects editor; and Chris Hink, our final picture editor. Last but not least, Aran Tanchum and Vinny Guisetti on foley, Benjamin Wynn on sound design, and a stellar new score with all your favorite hits by Jeremy Zuckerman. And plenty of other fine folks I’m forgetting!

So now you know what it is and why it happened. I hope you do end up enjoying it after all, especially as a last lighthearted, nostalgic romp before POOP. GETS. REAL. And then the series is done.

Love, Bryan

Well, that was a fairly disappointing episode. Understandable why they had to do this given the explanation a couple of pages back, but I'm at the point where I want the plot to move forward and this just felt totally like filler which is kind of frustrating. I even half-watched episode 7 again to get fully up to speed.

That being said, I imagine The Ember Island Players would have been disappointing in its own way, but I never felt that as I only watched ATLA for the first time last year and I basically bought the whole box set and binged on it over a few days.

It hasn't even had a chance to payoff yet...

This clip episode crap sucks but it's totally not their fault.
The pay-off isn't only the end. We were promised a fantastic show in one of our favorite cartoon universes, but so far we got a slightly confused, while good looking mess.

Yeesh. I couldn't even finish it. I would have preferred if they just skipped an episode.
I wonder what the original plan was for the episode before the whole budget getting slashed issue arose.
Also how far did you get into it
as it gets better once Varrick starts his story at least.

Mhmpf, they probably had to can the whole heavily foreshadowed evil Opal plot, oh woe is me, it seems the bet is no longer valid.

It is and I am almost prepared to face my loss with the remaining time left.

I skipped though stopping on parts with new animation.

Back for a post, miss you guys :(

If I could say one thing about this episode:
Q93TOT0.gif

The "Glad I caught you at home" made me laugh.

This episode would have been fine IF WE HAD A LONGER SEASON THAN 13 EPISODES.

Did you even read Bryan's explanation?
Just did. Its unfortunate. In all I think they did an OK job but its just really shitty that they focused on the bad parts of season 1 and especially Korea's bitchiness in season 2.

I never thought I'd lose my bet with trey this way.

Varrick's story was good.

I understand a recap episode. I don't understand recapping over the worst parts of the show (the romance). I mean seriously? And then they completely just walk over the nonsense that was S2's ending and just say "yeah that was great". I was actually expecting them to use this as an opportunity to say how the hell Korra became the blue giant, but apparently that is too much effort.

The recap also just reaffirmed to me just how crappy Korra is at fighting. All the victories they give to her are totally misplaced. S1 maybe you could give her, but Deus Ex deserves that one above all. S2 -> Jinora. S3 -> Combined airbenders tornado. S4 -> Varrick/Zhu lee I bet.

When the narrator basically said "This is going to be a clip episode" I was thoroughly pissed.

Then I saw the episode and it was one of the better clip episodes of anything. Definitely up there with Champloo and the like.

I really enjoyed it. Love how Mako sees his relationship with Asami and Korra. And especially liked how everyone was calling him out on it.

And Varrick's part was great.

I enjoyed it a lot. And yes, Korra becoming a giant spirit was AWESOME. :)

Did you like giant spirit Bolin also?
I'm taking Varricks explanation about Jinora as canon now. It all makes sense know as she's the queen of the fairies in the avatar universe. Unalaq and Zaheer didn't stand a chance against the Fairy Queen.

If they knew that they had a cut budget, and the knew that they were going online only, what was stopping them from reconstituting the story from 13 episodes to 12 episodes + a bonus. Especially because this episode, while OK, is ultimately pointless.

Trust that even the other villains wouldn't like Unalaq also ha.
Kinda wish they had Varrick narrate the whole episode rather than spending 10 minutes on Mako and his romantic adventures.
After the Mako part I was like, "Asami really should've taken a shit in Mako's bed."
