Really? Really? Really?

I get home after work and jump straight to Korra all excited, expecting a episode with Toph and hopefully some Kuvira development. But instead it's a clip show? Only 13 episodes and they decided to completely waste one with a clip show? Not even the good kind like Ember Island Players, but one using the actual boring clip format. And to make matters as worse as possible, the first half is taking Mako and the cringeworthy romance, the absolute worst thing about the entire series, and shoving it right down my throat. Damn, I had to fight myself not to just quit mid-episode.

I guess it's partially my fault for trying to go in blind, expecting awesomeness. Should have known better than to have blind faith by now. Haven't been this frustrated with this show since Book 2.

Speaking of Book 2 though, Varrick taking a steaming dump on Unalaq and that entire season was the one redeeming part of this episode. Couldn't help but smile at them acknowledging how absolutely ridiculous that was, especially the finale. Being saved by the Queen of the Fairies out of nowhere is pretty much exactly what happened!

And the reaction of the fire/waterbender people is pretty much the exact same as the defensive fans that thought it was awesome. "It's just a cartoon, don't overthink it!" Lmao.
Its Nicks fault, they cut the budget, at this point we should be glad the series is getting an ending , Book 3 could had been the ending of Korra.
But they still could done a better job with the clips, awful episode, except for Varrick.

Watched the first minute of the new episode before stopping since I hate flashback episodes. Anything new actually happen?

No, but if you like Varrick watch the last 6 minutes.

Okay, just read back in through the thread. Sucks that their budget was slashed and they had to do this, or let people go. Dammit Nick.

No. There's about 5 minutes of new footage, but no plot development happens at all. Just some light-hearted pokes at the reception of the series. Totally skippable episode if you want.

Maybe it's because my expectations were adjusted following that letter bryke sent out, but I wasn't completely offended by it. I wish they did something more than just systematically address fan complaints though.

Don't like Mako? "Eh, I was dumb. I meant well, and it didn't work out. What else can I say?"

Having trouble with Korra's development? "Lets lay out my basic journey in a few minutes."

Don't like some of the ridiculousness of the story? "Never let the truth get in the way of a good story!"

It wasn't bad, just blah. If they had such budget trouble, then why not just not make an episode altogether? Make it a 12 episode season.

One of the stories should have been Su so we could gain greater insight into her and Kuvira atleast.

I'd much rather have this than nothing.

Bryan already said it was either doing a clip show or letting go of quite a few workers several weeks early.

We had two options: 1) let go a significant number of crew members several weeks early, or 2) make a clips episode. We never considered the first option.

I actually think it's because Nickelodeon ordered 13 episodes for this season, rather than 12, so you can't simply "cut" an episode.

So the options were:

1) Make 13 episodes on a shoestring budget and fire some of the staff in the process.
2) Make 12 episodes + 1 clips episode and not fire the staff.

Option 2 is the more appealing to me.

Wow, Mako really IS just a plot device to cause love triangles. His flashback actually explained his part in the story up to now pretty well and 90% of it was relationship drama. And then he said that he had to go figure out who he was without a woman in his life and I realized that he actually doesn't have much of a life outside of his relationships.

I liked this recap episode. It shows me that the writers are very self aware of the fuck up that happened and this was a tongue in cheek reference to all those. I'm surprised at GAF's reaction.

Review roundup for the latest episode.

The last sequence of “Remembrance” delivers some solid chuckles, but ultimately this episode isn’t essential viewing unless you desperately need a recap of what happened in the last three seasons. It doesn’t move the plot forward, and while the writers try to use the clip show element to enlighten character dynamics, any relationship developments that do occur feel shallow because of the limitations placed on the episode from its conception. This creative team tries to make the most of their situation, but “Remembrances” can’t overcome the clip show hurdle and gets stuck in mediocrity.

Truth be told, "Remembrances" was more enjoyable than expected -- better than just running clips with zero commentary. Still, considering what's come before, this episode felt somewhat empty. (I only wish we could have gotten an "Ember Island Players" redux -- "The Republic City Players" anyone?) The good news is, clip shows are usually a sign that sh**'s about to get real -- especially in this case, since we only have five chapters left in the series. Hopefully next week's episode will kick things back into high gear.

The segment featuring Bolin and Varrick is by far the most entertaining. Entertaining the re-education camp escapees on their boat trip, Varrick steps in as resident bard and amounts to the least reliable narrator of all time. He tells the many action-filled tales of Bolin a.k.a. Nuktuk: Hero of the South! Apparently the show’s many villains were in Legion of Doom-esque cahoots the entire time. Vaatu had access to a phone in the tree of time! Zaheer called him up! Unalaq — “the diabolical but incredibly boring, unpopular sorcerer from the north” (an incredible moment of Konietzko and DiMartino poking fun at themselves) — showed up too! A blast from Juji’s laser eyes, a sprinkle of Jinora fairy dust, a left and right hook from Nuktuk, and that’s that for Evil Squared. Wrongdoers were conquered.

That's true too. It's also a lot easier to see Korra's development when you place major moments side by side. When you spread them out, it's so gradual that you don't really notice a change at all, especially because Korra keeps screwing up, but when they showed her through her flashbacks, I realized that she actually has done a lot of growing up. Granted, it hasn't helped her to not screw up, but now she screws up more because her learning isn't enough to deal with stuff out of her league and less because of pure ignorance and trying to brute force everything.

That's fine and all, but what did Biogamer Girl say?

It can't be that surprising that we'd rather have a real episode instead of one going over all the shit we know already.

only good thing about this episode was varrick's story. plus he was totally on the money by calling that jinora thing in season 2 "the magical fairy queen saves the day"

wow that was such an interesting epi---

Ok, I watched the Bolin/Varrick part again. Real talk, that is possibly the funniest thing the show has ever done.

They really are the best.

i was "Fu*k this show" the entire episode
but the calling between the villains was pure gold
specially the "“the diabolical but incredibly boring, unpopular sorcerer from the north”
