Super Smash Bros. for Wii U |OT| True Potential of Smash Bros.

Ability to set default controller profile. It's annoying to have to constantly select a profile before starting a different mode. I'm the only one playing on my Wii U online so I think it should default to one.

This I wouldn't mind. I dislike the default shoulder button setup for the Pro controller, so I made a profile to fix it. I'd like to keep my profile set to it so I won't have to change it each time I use my Pro controller.

Allow voice chat in game with friends. They're my friends, at least let us talk online together if we want.

You can do this in lobbies I believe.

Connection strength icon on players in the lobby menu. Additionally I'd like it if we can set our region and only play against people nearest to our location.

I was first exposed to this in MvC3. This was a neat feature. If it helps out with connection issues (which I don't get many of) then I'm down for this.

Turn off stage hazards. I wouldn't mind playing on some stages in their normal state but just without any hazards that can kill you(Like the yellow devil for example.)

Eh, I think it's fine the way it is. Nintendo knew folks loved Final Destination since there's nothing in it, so having Omega forms of stages is perfect. Also, if you want to play a non FD/Omega stage that has platforms, there's always maps like Battlefield and Smash Town.

Another for glory mode that lets you play 1v1 but with equipment enabled.

This would be neat, but I think there aren't going to be any more new modes.

I really really want all Omega stage backgrounds to be usable in the stage builder. The game already has tons of backgrounds that don't interact with the stage at all and I'm pretty disappointed we're still locked to 5.

There's also a few online things I'd like to see changed. For instance, I want to make an invite-only room among friends, or at least let me close the slot for Player 3/4. I'd also like an option to make a 3-stock 1v1 For Glory. Maybe these features are already there but I haven't been able to see them. Connection strength and default controller across the entire game I definitely agree with you.

That's a good idea. I see no reason why that can't work, the backgrounds are already there. They should allow us to share custom stages online and the community would then rank them and occasionally there'd be weekends where some custom stages would be selectable in for glory mode if they were picked by the devs.

So had some buddies over and we played 7 player smash for hours. Holy fuck my eyes are bleeding.

I'm new to Smash so I still don't understand the nuances or really how the fight system works, compared to something like Killer Instinct.

Which is really surprising considering Smash only has 2 attack buttons and a jump. I've got a long ass way to go.

But godddamn this game gets hectic, so many times, where I had no idea what was going on.

Highlight was 7 player Peach mirror match for 10 minutes lol. We had a CPU Yoshi and didn't even realize if was in the match until 8 minutes in.

Yup.

It's only in between matches. In game it's set off. Nintendo seems kind of opposed to voice chat in game for some reason. It's weird because if people friend each other they should allow them to communicate all the time. The Wii U has a video chat feature so I doubt they're doing it for parental reasons.

Yup. A connection rating for everyone would help diagnose players with bad connections. You'd be able to tell if some changes you make to your network helps out.

I like some of the regular stage designs but in for glory everything is omega only. I don't think a stage with platforms would hurt anyone.

It wouldn't even have to be a new mode. It can be a temporary event for some weekends. That way it will keep people coming back(not like they won't come back anyway as the game is excellent) and it wouldn't split the community as it's only temporary.

Is Duck Hunt the shit or what?
I unlocked them a few hours ago and I decided to give them a try.
Oh My God. It's like.. second nature for me. It instantly clicked with me.
Fast, Strong moves, silly animations, presentation is top tier. I seriously can't believe it's so good.
Definitely one of my new mains

That's pretty fascinating. I wonder how much of the AI script is stored in the Amiibo. Probably not that much. I picture the amiibo storing a bunch of 'keys' that when you upload it into the Wii U, those 'keys' go to certain AI scripts that are then used for the Amiibo character itself ingame.
Maybe. I was cynically thinking all level 50 Amiibos for a particular character might be identical, but even ~500 bytes is enough to store some basic configuration "keys" or something.

Spoilers because this ties into how I finally ended up beating the level 50 Peach:
This is all theories so don't take it as fact. I might have misinterpreted things.

I don't know if this is true of the Smash AI in general, but at least with Peach there seemed to be a couple of different "behaviors" that would become active. The big things that made it super difficult for me to win are the crazy reaction times (Level 9 CPU or worse), combined with the Cruel Smash style boosted damage/knockback. So, if you just go in to attack, you will typically get crushed because the reaction time or input reading or whatever will just block or grab or whatever.

One behavior seemed to be the "waiting for you to do something" one. This is where the crazy reaction comes into play. Peach would walk or run towards me, but if I tried doing something like a counter or start charging a smash, then I think it would stop in place. Not attack, just stand still, or roll back. In this state it is very hard to get anything going.

Another behavior seemed to be the "aggressive low-hover to attack" one. Peach is presumably going to attack when she gets in range, but in this state she may actually be vulnerable to stuff like (mirror match) peach side+B, or a thrown turnip. I'm not sure if the crazy reaction time is turned off in this case or if it's just a nature of the game's mechanics that does not allow airdodges that low to the ground.

Another behavior might be a different attack "plan", maybe with a turnip. Another might be ledge guarding. Another might be returning from off stage, and so forth.

What I ended up finding out was that in the fast reaction state ("waiting for you to do something") when Peach walks towards you, either Peach's varying side smash hitbox is not properly taken into account because of the different weapons, or it just does not properly always react in time to stationary, non-charged smashes. I was able to just stand still and then use C-stick side smashes to repeatedly do damage in this state, and that helped a lot in being able to win a couple of times against the level 50 Peach.

Step 1 to learning Smash is to not compare it to anything else. There are some really high level concepts that apply to Smash as well as other fighting games (spacing attacks, controlling general space, making good reads) but everything else is completely fucking different. I really think Smash has to be looked at in a vacuum.

lmao, even Wario's victory taunt is a trollish laugh

I give this game 10/10 Warios
We had a party with up to 8 people playing yesterday. After unlocking Wario, one guy started playing with him and destroying people with the motorcycle and the match-winning waft. The motorcycle was hilariously annoying, but yes, Wario laughing on the ground after winning is so hilarious I couldn't even really be mad.

God I wish this game was out here now. :(

Does anybody else in Australia have it purchased online via JB Hi-Fi? Bought a New 3DS XL from them and it's coming in a few days late (mostly since I was at the gym for the hour they tried to deliver on Friday), so kind of paranoid I'll have to delay a Smash party I had planned next Saturday if I won't have Smash itself.

Oh no. D:

This comment on that karissa the destroy video is hilarious.

Moderator of /r/smashbros here. Some of us thought this girl was a fraud from the start, and now GameStop proves it. Everyone involved in the production of this video should be ashamed, except for the young child who didn't understand that she was being exploited. This stunt has greatly shaken our faith in GameStop, and in the professional SSB community. I know I will not be shopping at GameStop or playing Super Smash Brothers Wii U/3DS (I preordered both to get the special Mewtwo DLC) until a full apology is issued.

LOL!!

I thought people were joking but the Gamecube adapter is actually $50+ on eBay. WTF!?

I honestly can't get over how beautiful this game looks. MY GOD

At least F-Zero got a NintendoLand game and a Mario Kart 8 course, I guess. It and MOTHER certainly got the short end of the stick in the Wii U version, though. Dunno how it wound up that the 3DS version of all things treated them better.
Less intensive development resources, of course.

Mother and F-Zero have an interesting distinction amongst the franchises - they're the only two (outside of the retro series) whose last game release was Brawl.

Only one new stage, in the 3DS version, doesn't surprise me one bit. Disappointed, since they're my two favorite Nintendo franchises, but unsurprised.

Been playing for six hours straight with friends and alcohol. Eight player smash is great stuff.

Minor nitpick: doesn't show the kill count medals in 8 player smash. :/

I've been playing Smash for a long time. :)

Plus I played a bunch on the 3DS so I'm a little practiced. But you're playing fine! I have a tough time playing as Marth personally.

I used to /love/ marth, hes kinda awkward for me now. I can easily tip as in I know the distance, I just cant really get anything on you :P (wana help me get better? >.>)

LOL!!
GameStop just shot themselves in the foot.

I don't know how much you know about Smash culture (I'm an expert), but honor and shame are huge parts of it. It's not like it is in Marvel where you can become successful by being an asshole. If you screw someone over in Smash, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance.

What this means is the competitive scene, after hearing about this, is not going to want to purchase Smash for either system, nor will they purchase any of GameStop's games. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but GameStop has alienated an entire market with this move.

Square, publicly apologize and cancel FFXIII for 360 or you can kiss your business goodbye.

Yeah I need to unlearn the other stuff games have taught me I guess. Still lots I don't understand about Smash.

I used to main him in Melee (who didn't?) but I couldn't adjust to him in Brawl and haven't played much of him in Smash 4 yet.

Just playing is how you'll get better! Did you have something in mind?

just had the absolute best online match in Onett that ended with me using Lucina's counter on one of the cars and winning, feels so good

Lol not really :P I need to get better at when to rush and when to dodge. Also anything relating to grabs.

I adjusted to brawl, this is kinda odd for me in 4.
