Starcraft 2 player disqualified from tournament because of rape tweet

Why? 1 year is plenty harsh as it is if this guy is a pro (i.e. making the bulk of his money from gaming), and I would MUCH rather he learn a hard lesson from this and then be allowed back into the community to hopefully influence others to not be similarly giant assholes than to just kick him to the curb entirely.

Just throwing people out for life doesn't address the actual problem with the culture that causes this sort of thing to happen.

This

It's better that he learns from his mistake than to just ban him outright forever.

At least he acknowledged his mistake and publicly apologized. Doesn't mean he has done no wrong, but nobody in this world is completely free of making mistake or poor decision.

but he might not have fully realized what he was saying.

He is a grown man. Everyone knows what the word means (and no, it's not "to pillage" or whatever other dictionary defense people throw around) and its excessive use in the gaming community is disgusting (together with f*g, gay, etc) and something that should be harshly dealt with, native speaker or not.

E-sports players are very young guys, very likely to say a lot shit things before thinking about. This guy learned that very well.

English isn't his first language.

He deserves a lifetime ban for that.
I don't know about "lifetime ban" but definitely get fired from the team and have to earn respect back from the scene/try to find new employer. If he were an employee for a regular business and he just said that shit, he would be fired. Simple as that. I don't like how sports/esports players get special treatment just because their skills are valued.

Eh, you're probably right. People throwing around such hateful words just infuriates me.

If he makes amends (gives a pro-inclusive anti-hate speech talk and works to better the environment) then yes. If he is apparently clueless and does not know why what he said is trash, then I'd definitely be hesitant to let him back.

Dumbass should have been a bit more careful about what he says on Twitter. A lesson I once learned to my cost when I posted some quotes from Detroit Metal City on it.

So? It isn't mine either. That's certainly no excuse.

Just saying, you can tar and feather the man instead of using torches and pitchforks... The fact that you'd fire up the firing squad no matter the circumstances seems a bit overboard is all.

What taring and feathering? What firing squad? I don't think I'm even proposing some sort of punishment beyond what he's received, which is absolutely correct. I'm talking about him as an example of people in the gaming community knowing what the word means and using it indiscriminately in online games. It needs to stop and be dealt with severely until it does.

That was a lot worse than I was expecting. DQ is pretty much the very least they could do without the tournament getting huge backlash. Other TOs should follow and ban him from entering.

I came into this thread thinking he was using it in that dumb way where "Raped" analogous with getting stomped, wrecked etc. Which isn't cool to say either but this is worse and more directed in the literal sense, sheesh.

I agree with the descision to ban him for this, but I have to ask if his opponent was a guy would he still be banned ?

Anyone who uses the term "rape" at all needs to be banned in the future or else we have a double standard.

I get that it is part of the lingo, but if it makes players feel uncomfortable then it definitely should be punished. I think the DQ was totally fair. Even if the community as a whole accepted the terminology, that is an awkward as hell tweet.

As much as some people hate made up words like "pwn," I think most of us can agree that these terms invented by the communities are much better overall than sexually charged terminology which tends to be the first place a lot of languages go for taunting/aggressive (even when meant non-threateningly e.g. purely in video game performance).

I think we should try to get behind the new non-sexual words when they come up which will naturally give people less threatening outlets for expressing things like what the player was actually saying.

The people who spew garbage on Twitter are complete morons. He did not *need* to tweet in any way. Go mouth off in private messages to your friends/teammates. It's pretty simple. If he was so compelled by emotion, perhaps doublecheck with friends/teammates about his tweet or...you know, write something like "Prepare to lose" instead?

"Going to rape some girls soon #fragbitemasters"

Like Sn4ke_911 said, lifetime ban for that shit.

A lifetime ban would be an appropriate if the incidents happened frequently from a single competitor who clearly refused to learn their lesson, modify their behavior, or apologize. A lifetime ban for a single incident for which the competitor apologized is a nuclear response to a spitball, especially when the competitor is agreeing that his behavior is inappropriate.

Man I don't understand how people don't expect to get in trouble for this kind of stuff. I don't think he should get a life time ban, but it's definitely not something he should be let off the hook for.

Rape, retarded and gay - If you use these word in some sort of slang, I instantly think less of you and anything you say is probably more dumb shit.

Well that's a great way of dismissing any criticisms. Usually anyone who says retarded it is because they object to a point you are making and hold an equally dim view of you.

The casual usage of rape and gay as a pejorative is much worse and definitely senseless.

Why doesnt this kind of thing happen more actually?
That kind of behavior shouldn't be tolerated on any service

Twitter wants to make money. The outrage from these tweets help them get more.

...and admitted that he sometimes writes stupid stuff on twitter...

There is a VERY big difference to writing something stupid and writing something that should never be written in the first place

This was very much in the second one.

They did the right thing and it's not even a debate, but you know, the folks that seem to always have some (bullshit) answer for everything still will, I'm sure.

Blame gaming culture for using "rape" as a bad metaphor for beating your opponent.

Not just that, how often I see 'I am going to rape the replay button' in Youtube comments is disgusting. What's even weirder is that this should be considered a positive comment seeing they like the video (often a music video or whatever). When did that ever become an acceptable expression, don't people realize what they are actually saying? :/

I saw the headline somewhere else, but not the actual tweet, and somehow I was not expecting it to be as bad as it turned out to be.

... that's the kind of thing that will get you fired from pretty much any job.

I think the punishment is fine.

He is not the first person to say something really stupid on Twitter nor the first person to be punished by it. For the most part these people need to realize that -insert made up statistic here- of the stuff they were going to write on twitter is pointless, adds no value and should be kept to themselves otherwise you'll get in trouble for it.

Reading this topic title I thought I was going to click it and see a stupid tweet along the lines of "I'm going to rape this guy in our next match!!!".

But nope. This level of stupid was not anticipated.
