Starcraft 2 player disqualified from tournament because of rape tweet

As for it's normalization, as a term, amongst men, it is ignored but should not be. When GAF collectively rented a BF3 server way back when, I was a part of the admin team. I advocated kicks/bans for use of "rape" "nigger" "faggot" etc., but was essentially overruled, as the gaming community uses those words a lot, so we should only ban when they are "overused".

And here lies the problem.

No it doesn't. To rape someone (man or woman) means that you are going to smash him/her in the game.

It's just bad language, nothing more.

So you're an MRA and an apologist for misogynistic violent language in gaming culture. Quite a combo.

I can't even...
So in his moronic mind it is ok to tweet "I am going to r*** some boy"?
he pointed out previous instances of sc2 pro gamers using rape in this context against male opponents where there was little to no drama.

so yes, that probably is his position.

Oh my god.

Yeah just like the N-word and "Fag" are just words right? What's the gamer slang for those?

And rape can be to overpower someone and take advantage of them. But keep trying to justify your ridiculous logic,

"Just bad language" only to you. If I ever say something like that and my company find out I am over for good.

THESE ARE NOT MY VIEWS. JUST HOW THE WORLD (MOSTLY USA) SEES IT:

If a guy says RAPE it's taken much more seriously then when a girl says RAPE, much similarly to when white people say the N word compared to black people. ALL IM SAYING IS THAT ITS SIMILAR, not the same. Because rape more known to be associated with it happening to a girl rather than a guy.

I fully believe saying rape is wrong completely.

why are they wrong not condoning it as something good or cool to say but it has been used in gaming for ages. I agree it has to stop but it has been apart of the competitive gaming culture slang forever.

It is not "just" bad language. I'm aware it's been in use forever, and I myself am definitely guilty of saying it to people occasionally, but I grew the fuck up and stopped using it in an inappropriate and offensive way. Just because it's a part of the culture doesn't mean it has to be like that. Culture can, does, and should change.

I'm not sure this is a good comparison to make, just saying.

The biggest idiots are the ones defending him because it's part of "gaming culture". It's that what gaming has turn into, then I don't want to be a part of it anymore.

Is being such an asshole to people you play an acceptable thing to do now?

Jesus christ what a fuckin' idiot. Fair punishment.

Stop defending usage of the word rape because 'it's a gamer thing'. Stop. That's why people don't want to be associated with 'gamers'.

fuck this guy

No one here is defending him. No one here is defending the word rape. No one here is saying that what he said is okay, or he didn't deserve the punishment.

All some of us are saying is that given the context, it's likely that his comment was made out of ignorance and/or stupidity rather than of malice or misogyny.

Pro-tip: Even the NFL doesn't let players drop the N-bomb anymore.

Saying "Gamers have always been boorish assholes" does not automatically excuse terrible behavior in 2014.

Both of which should still be reprimanded.

this is seriously the gamers definition of the word regarding the game, not saying its right but I know how they talk and how they mean it. After they dominate a player on a game they say you got raped.

Christmas Eve, 2014.

"Dinner was delicious, darling" Kas' dad told his wife as he kissed her on the forehead.
"I'll do the dishes real quick, so we can start our annual board game night."

Kas' dad always managed to make her feel like a schoolgirl again. Such a charmer.

"Kas, it's almost time for game night, are you coming down?" Kas' mom called for her son from the bottom of the stairs.

As she started setting up a game of Risk, Kas came down the stairs. He looked very excited.

"I'm going to rape you tonight mom!" He playfully said.

Kas' mom's jaw dropped.

"W-w-What?"

"I am going to RAPE you AND dad tonight and i'm going in dry!"

"What the fuck is wrong with you, Kas?" His dad had come back from the kitchen. "Don't talk to your mother like that."

"It's ok, it's just a gaming term dad, jesus, are you going to cry like mom?"

"What the hell has gotten into you, have you lost your mind?" Kas' dad knuckles turned white. "Get out, i don't want to see you tonight."

Kas rolled his eyes and walked out, as his mom broke out in tears.

"He was just treating you like he would treat another man as well, mom" Kas' baby brother Steven piped up.

"Shut the fuck up, Steven." Kas' dad yelled "Go to your room."

Christmas was ruined.

Unless other pro-gamers got away so far with "I'm going to rape you" this is a bunch of bullshit.

This is a prime example of the changing climate and some people being slow to adapt. Playing FPS' in the 90s, it was all "gh3y," "raped," and shit until the cows came home and no one noticed. Now the world is a lot different, and there has been a very long grace period for professional gamers. If you said you wanted to "rape" your opponent within the last two or three years, chances are someone would have pulled you aside and said that that wasn't cool. If you still haven't gotten the message, it is too late, and now they can't do anything but ban people. We've had nearly two decades to change some of the trash talk lingo, get on the trolley already.

Intent doesn't really matter in cases like this, frankly.

This.

It also used to be part of FGC culture to get into a fist-fight at the SFII machine if someone bodied you hard enough or trash-talked enough. Hell, I saw someone get stabbed because they managed a double Perfect against the wrong person.

It was part of the culture, sure, but I'm glad it's gone. Just like I will be when stuff like this is a distant memory rather than the norm.

Ignorant people propagating horrible actions, without question, for "tradition" or "culture" has led to a lot of dark stains on human history.

I'm impressed. I was *SURE* we wouldn't see defenders. And yet, Faith and EASTC0AST have proven me very wrong.

Real life more disappointing than SciFi network fiction.

I sense this isn't going to penetrate the vitriol shield.

I believe he wrote that because a few months ago during a different tournament a male Korean progamer told another male Korean progamer that he was going to rape him in the next match. The audience burst out laughing, almost like it was adorable hearing this sweet looking Korean guy who could barley speak English mutter that phrase...he ended up never getting in trouble for it.

It seems like Destiny thinks that it is an injustice or something that Kas got in trouble for saying this to a women, when the male Korean did not. It's a stupid argument though, just because the one guy wasn't punished (when he should have been) doesn't mean this guy shouldn't be now so it just seems like he is kicking up a storm for publicity.

Male rape is just like female rape the opposite of adorable, I would be ashamed to be in the same room as someone who laughed at it.

And that's the reason why this punishment is just too harsh.

Why should we treat women different than men? Everyone should be treated the same way. And his tweet was clearly some gaming slang.

Why should violence always take precedent over non violent behavior as equality?

It's like someone telling another that "sure if we are equal then I can hit you, because I hit my peers too" when that other person has never hit anyone in their life and for them equality would be that no one hits anyone.

Equally good treatment is always better than equally bad treatment.

So if I'm going to play a basketball match and one guy of the other team says "We're going to rape you". Should I call the police?

Reading through this thread, I've actually been pretty impressed by how right-headed people have been about it. Most folks, even if they quibble over the degree of punishment, seem to recognize that it was an idiotic thing to say, and a punishment was well deserved. I was honestly impressed.

And then I get to you... It's incredibly troubling that people with opinions like yours exist. Suddenly it's all about "suppressing men" and "if this were a woman, no one would have cared." It's disgusting. I hope you recognize that folks finding it hard to believe you're honestly posting that opinion is an indictment of just how far off the mark you are on this.

Gran master is the best league, above master, it is the top 200 player for each server (Europe, America, Asia... etc).

No not even close, low Gran master are usually not pro gamer in europe, only the top 50-100ish, but that is really rough estimation (and sometime it is hard to say since some pros have numerous account...etc), in Korea where there is a lot of amazing gamers so 200 is not enough to hold them all in one league, while in Europe it is. And among the few pro gamer, actually very actually win tournament, apart from some very rare case they win money by their team/stream + small cash prize by being top 16... etc

Ok, thank you for taking time to explain it too me.

Not sure if it's bad giving him more publicity, but Destiny, the one progamer who tweeted his stance on this issue (couple pages back) posted up a long video on his thoughts. I haven't watched it yet, just saw it went up, might be interesting if you want to see what his brain is thinking 0_0

huh. wasn't there a gaffer named riskychris? he's banned now, but i wonder if its the same guy.

im not a defender I said I played games long enough to hear the term and know how its used. I said its got to stop! another guy said gaf hosted BF3 servers and it was said on there. I don't use the term or like it but heard it for ages!

So if I'm going to play a basketball match and one guy of the other team says "We're going to rape you". Should I call the police?

If it was a Nike three-on-three tournament and there was prize money, and your opponent tweeted it, then they' probably get disqualified, yes.

he ignored me saying it has to stop lol.

So if it has to stop, why are we surprised about this punishment again?

If it was a Nike three-on-three tournament and there was prize money, and your opponent tweeted it, then they' probably get disqualified, yes.

Better example, if you were an NBA player invited to All Star weekend and you tweeted that you were going to "totally rape" Lebron James, they'd quickly tell you your flight has been cancelled and that the coaches got a replacement for your spot.

I'm not sure this is a good comparison to make, just saying.

No, it is.

It's contextual, and very similar in terms
Of this argument.

The same way some black people believe it's okay to say the N just word because it they are black is VERY SIMILAR to how some people think it's okay for a girl to say RAPE just because raped is mostly associated with females.

If a male says rape it's awful, and less accepted then a female saying it because it's mostly associated with them.

Same with Some black people thinking it's okay to say the N word just because they are black.
If a white person said it, it would be an out cry.

This is not opinion, nearly fact.
None of these views are mine.

People have gotten way too concerned with being politically correct and sensitive these days. They're all just words.
Words can be extremely powerful, both in a positive and negative way depending on whats being said. "Just words" to me reads like that its nothing serious, and i dont agree with that, general speaking that is. Sometimes words might not mean much, but sometimes they can leave an impact.

he lives in the same universe as the rest of us right? I don't need to read his mind -- he knows what he said and did know or should have known it was incredibly inappropriate.

I don't know any women who'd drop "rape" like it's a silly thing. It'd be more like black guys saying, "you're gonna get lynched!" It's a kind of line that people don't cross.

I know girls that would call each other bitches and shit, but rape is usally a sensitive topic.

Can you point out some examples of women in competition stating they want to rape their opponents? Tennis, soccer, basketball, skiing, gymnastics, gaming, MMA, anything?
