After playing the game over the weekend I have to say, I'm disappointed in it overall. Don't get me wrong the core gameplay is a lot of fun, but almost everything that surrounds it, not so much.
8-Player Smash: I really hate this. I like at least a bit of skill to be involved in Smash, but this just completely throws that out the window.
I see nothing wrong with it, it's a lot more chaotic, but it's an option, very nice when you have 5 people and don't want to rotate someone out each match.
The new Classic mode: I really don't know why they felt the need to change it from the amazing Classic mode that is in the 3DS version. I feel that adding 8-player smash battles to it completely ruins the fun at higher intensities.
I really like the "Classic Mode" but they should NOT have called it Classic Mode. Should have given it an original name (Smash Arena?) and given us an ACTUAL Classic Mode
The stages: I feel that too many interfere with the fight too much (Orbital Gate, Kalos League, Pyrosphere, etc) or are just really dull to play on (Wrecking Crew, Duck Hunt, the omega stages, FD, etc).
Agree, although Pyrosphere would have been awesome if the stage was bigger. Gaur Plain is SO much fun, that stage is stage hazard bosses done right. At least the large stage selection means there are still plenty of stages that are fun to play on. I hope we get stage DLC about a year from now
Smash Tour: This thing is downright terrible. I honestly don't understand what Sakurai was thinking when he decided that this was a good mode.
Haven't touched it
Master/Crazy Orders: This is also ruined by 8-Player Smah.
I'm fine with it but they should have given an option to turn off 8-player smash for these modes.
Target Blast: It's still just a shitty Angry Birds clone. It would have been nice if the resources put into Smash Run, Smash Tour, and Target Blast were put into another character specific Break the Targets mode.
I really miss character-specific Break the Targets, even my youngest sister misses them and she couldn't even read when Melee came out. I think we all remember being flabbergasted by Young Link's target stage until we learned the secrets
I'm also bummed out by the lack of a Melee-esque Adventure mode, but after SSE and Smash Run it's probably best that one wasn't included.
Yeah it'd probably be terrible. I would really like a simple Adventure mode that goes through all the stages with short ~30 second cut-scenes every once in a while. With SSE they tried to be epic, and it just turned into tedious gameplay and a fan-fic level story.
Event mode and All-Star are still fun.
Yes they are glorious!
Melee is still the best Smash IMO. I really hope they manage to best it with Smash 5.
Right now I'm sitting Smash 4 > Melee > Brawl > Smash 64 although they REALLY need to bring back Targets and real Classic ;_;
