How can one not like the Joker? He's funny, charismatic and utterly unique. I root for him every time I watch TDK.
I would have been angered and saddened if he'd been killed.
Though at the same time, I do not root against any of the moral and virtuous characters, all of whom I greatly sympathize with. I realize this is paradoxical, yet I find myself doing the same thing with almost any film that has a charismatic villain. The Star Wars series (Palpatine, Darth Vader) and The Silence of the Lambs (Hannibal, not Buffalo Bill) spring to mind. There are some villains I don't side with, but whose styles or personalities I admire, like Saruman (Lord of the Rings series), Mason Verger (Hannibal), Elle Driver and Bill (Kill Bill). Still others repulse me: John Doe (Seven), Captain Vidal (Pan's Labyrinth).

I think my reaction to fictional antagonists is tied to how closely their bearings and actions relate to those of real criminals and crimes, combined with how strongly they appeal to my aesthetic preferences. I don't find the characters in the first category repulsive because they win me over by force of personality, or their acts aren't explicitly depicted. These characters do not discomfit me on an instinctive level. The second category is more difficult to pin down. I suppose you might say these characters' combinations of attractive and unattractive qualities place them in the gray area between likable and repellent. The third category is almost self-explanatory. Characters that embody the ugly side of human nature or remind me of disturbing aspects of life are wholly repugnant, and are in this sense the most effective type of onscreen villain for me as a viewer.

So far as I can tell, the fact that the Joker strongly appeals to me hasn't detract from my experience of TDK at all. I still find myself completely absorbed during moments of tension. I still appreciate the film's dramatic resonance. If my unwillingness to accept the assigned moral alignment of certain characters in film has any drawbacks, they are compensated by the sheer pleasure of watching those characters in action.
 
Is there a listing somewhere of what (Canadian) IMAX theatres will be showing TDK in January? I saw the film in 35mm each time I saw it this summer, but I now live in a city with 1-2 IMAX theatres, and I wouldnt mind finally watching it in that format.

Just call your local IMAX theater. They told me their schedule for the next 6 months when I wanted to find out if they would be showing TDK. If they are taking something off IMAX to show TDK again, they will be able to tell you today.

I got the bluray, and on this one random part, theres a kind of thick blue line that goes up the screen for like 3 seconds out of nowhere...it makes no sense...

it always occurs on that part.

I also noticed the same thing happening in "I am legend" blu ray but it would be 2 blue lines going across a different part of the screen on the same part of that movie.

could it be my ps3 or my hdtv?

<edit> actually, I am noticing whenever theres some strange bight light...it's causing a blue line...wtf

There's nothing wrong with your TV or PS3, it's anamorphic lens flare. I noticed it on Transformers as well. Just a special effect, nothing to worry about.
 
So I saw The Dark Knight for the first time a few days ago (I know, I know, LTTP)... what a great movie. I thought all the talk about Heath Ledger's Joker was hyperbole, but not so... his performance was truly amazing.

All in all, it's probably my favorite movie of 2008 (granted, I haven't seen many movies this year). And funnily enough, I'm not even a fan of the Batman series/comic books.
 
For those of us invited to the Nolan BD-Live commentary tomorrow night, what should we expect? Answers to dumb questions or genuine quality commentary?
 
A reminder again that the commentary is tonight.

I wanted to do a GAF-commentary on the day of the launch of the film but never really came around to setting anything up.

So the idea is having a GAF-screening following the Nolan one if there is any interest. I have a room set up for midnight on the east coast. Thought it would be fun to check out the feature and discuss some of the comments. If it doesn't work we can try for another night.

Also curious if there has been any GAF-commentaries posted up or anything?

It's not that funny - normally, I would say fans of a comic tend to berate movie adaptations. They tend to be hypercritical to the little details, unable to sit back and enjoy.

The real testament is if a comic book fan LOVE an adaptation.
