Elite: Dangerous Standard Beta (Starting Jul 29th - $75)

GAF, humor me. When you get to training mission 2, just sit there are the start of the mission and roll to either direction at a moderate speed. If you notice the occasional framerate stutter every few seconds, I'd really appreciate it if you'd check this thread:

https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=65415&p=1099072

I've been dealing with microstutter like that since the first premium beta and nothing has helped. That thread is the only time I've seen someone actually try to get to the root of the problem but we need more data. I haven't seen any official response from Frontier and they haven't written anything in the ticket I opened a few months back.

Price will continue to be $50 after release, or will it go up?

It'll remain 50

No, it goes up to $55 on December 16th, and you lose the Mercenary Edition perks too. If you are planning on buying it after the 16th for certain and you want to save yourself $5 then you need to buy it before launch.

Disappointed my rig only gets 30fps with everything set to high based on the Combat Training. Looks like I'll need to invest in a new gfx card, maybe a new mobo too to support a second card if I want to use 3-4 screens.

Game runs great with a sub-$100 750 Ti, btw. I get 60fps most of the time.

This game isn't very GPU intensive. You might want to look seeing if something is wrong.

On my SLI'd 980's it seems to rarely go over 30% GPU usage and I've even tested it on a single 980, it only jumps about 10%.

This is running a locked 60 FPS at max settings at 1920x1200.

Things do go up when I run at 5760x1200 but that's expected. I can still do it on a single card though.

Today I learned that you don't need a wake scanner to drop into the wake left by an interdiction o_O

Helping friends just got a lot easier.

Well screw it, I caved in and pre-ordered the game. Just had to try that combat demo, installing now. Even with the no-offline issue, I'm still very excited this and other space sims so I felt it was ultimately a no-brainer.

Any way of defining a commander name early (is it a permanent thing anyway) or will we define that come December 16th?

I caved last night and bought the Merc Edition too. I was holding off until release to see how smoothly launch day goes, but even if it has a rough first week as long as they fix it up I'll be buying it eventually, so why not save the $5 and just get it now? lol

Ironically enough the game wouldn't load for me, not a good first impression. I get a "Lost Login" error every time I run the combat demo from the launcher. I got around it though by going into the demo directory and launching the EliteDangerous32.exe directly, the demo works just fine then.

Spent some time setting up my X45 and trying out all of the missions, felt good to be flying Elite finally even if only in a limited demo. I can't beat the mission where you need to take down a sidewinder and a Lakon at the same time though, I need to play around with that one. I wish there were more than just combat tutorials, like maybe a docking tutorial for example. Guess I'll just have to wait.

No, we have to wait until the 16th.

Sorry if old, Cobra nest paint pack for free:

Take it guys!

Thanks, got 'em!

Yeah, was gonna get the game anyway but might as well get it now. :)

Sorry to hear about your problem with the launcher demo, went smoothly for me so far. I played the demo and at the final mission (I think it's called Incursion) I get to "Scan 9", I think it's a Viper but I can't seem to take him down. Tried it twice, got him to 2% and he blew me up. The second time was a fantastic moment for me, he attacked me head on and blew my front glass off which caused depressurization and left me without front targeting reticules. I chased the fucker for a good 5 minutes and took another 20% off his hull (with mine being 8%), shooting blind, but it wasn't enough.

The whole thing left a big grin on my face, felt like such an intense, adrenaline pumping moment.

Btw, I'm playing with KB+M, changed mouse X to yaw, Q and E to roll, A and D to thurst left/right. I feel I'm doing alright with the combat, definitely thought it was gonna be much worse with keyboard and mouse. Might switch Space and Alt to vertical thrusters. Combat generally feels very good I think, it's probably because of some weapons having a bit of an aim assist, and I'm glad for it. I'm actually getting more excited about the release now that I've tried the combat demo, really stoked. I'll probably get mowed down on my first haul but who cares, it's Elite.

If I make a preorder and then download the combat demo, can I cancel the preorder after?
1) That's a pretty dick move.

2) Of course not. Did you forget the game is online-only? If you cancel the pre-order, do you really think their servers will authenticate you to play the training demo?

I've never played any of the elite games.

Anyone have a link to a decent preview or summary of the game? I guess I am trying to figure out whether it mainly focuses on space combat or if there are other things to do.

The website doesn't quite make it clear (to me anyway).

Been watching some installments of Wonders of the Galaxy - looks amazing.

Yeah, such a dick, wanting to play a demo of the game for free! Who could imagine such a world?

You are kind of right there, but this demo is used as a preorder incentive, so its not exactly a regular demo. I wouldn't be surprised if they end up releasing it later as a regular demo, for those wondering if they can run the game.
Also, in defense of the posters who attacked you: you totally have a pirate as an avatar! :P

I suspect not. I'm guessing you want a demo but there's nothing available right now so far as I know.

Ahead of release it seems you're either an early backer or not. Post release there might be a demo I guess if you wait.

Hey guys, I am currently using thrustmaster t16000m and loving the hall effect sensors, but the throttle is less than satisfactory. Any ideas for and upgrade that won't break the bank? Ideally some sort of stand alone throttle so I can keep the t16000m since I love the feel of it. Maybe twin sticks?

Your next stop in the HOTAS tour is the X52/X52 Pro, but given how cheaply the 52 is made, I'd have to recommend splurging on the Pro.

To everyone requesting Joystick/HOTAS recommendations,
Don't forget that Star Citizen is designing its own custom solution,
and unlike most other options, it will be designed specifically for
space simmers, so its likely to be a lot more suitable than some of
the current options.

Edit: I currently use a T16000m and a keyboard.
Throttle mapped to Q and E
Thrust Horizontal to W and S
Thrust Lateral to A and D
Thrust Vertical to CTRL and Space
Boost to Shift

That gives me all the dogfighting manoeuvrability I need.

So clearly the solution is to play Elite with a keyboard and mouse for the next 3 years while waiting for this mythical product to release? Come on man.

Sorry, I meant to quote Bust Nak, who already stated that he was using the same Joystick as me already.
Just wanted to point out that a Joystick/Keyboard combo is plenty suitable until a properly designed space sim stick is released.
Also, scuttlebutt suggests that Star Citizen solution will be released within 18 months.

I am using the keyboard with pretty much the same set up as you do, but I tried the x52 and want a hotas solution. The thing is, I really like the T16000m and want to keep using it as my stick, so a stand alone throttle would be prefect. And if Star Citizen is aiming for something special in 18 month, that's all the more reason not to break open the piggy bank for an x55. Maybe I can get a Thrustmaster HOTAS X and just use the throttle, would that even work?

This is probably your best solution.

Took some time this weekend to do some exploring. While initially fun, the following situation started to become my aggravating norm:

1. Undock, fly to system I want to explore in
2. Supercruise, spot something to investigate
3. Begin to fly towards it
4. INTERDICTION ATTEMPT. Manage to evade.
5. ... where the fuck was the thing I was flying towards again? argh
6. Supercruise, loop back to a distance where you can once again see the thing you were looking for earlier
7. Goto 3 (sometimes)

They seriously need to tone down the interdiction rates. From reading stuff on the Elite forums it's a factor of system security (duh) and, weirdly, loadout of your ship. But with a default sidewinder it can be an incredibly frustrating and immersion breaking thing, especially when it constantly happens in a controlled area of space.

The above were all from NPCs too, and were evadeable for say 90% of the time.

I'm guessing it means the most economical if you're also doing some trading, so the fastest route may go through some unpopulated systems while the economical probably tries to avoid those, maybe?

Regarding the Throttle/Joystick conversation above, are there even any other stand alone throttle controllers besides the CH Pro?

I couldn't find any even after digging deep on the net, but maybe I'm just blind :P

I bet the CH Pro is a great product but it's just too expensive here in Germany... so are they any other solutions?
