Legend of Korra Book 4: Balance |OT| A Feast of Crows

I dunno, the Bolin and Opal romance just don't resonate with me, mainly because they have had like 5 seconds of screentime together and most of it has been in the negative.
Yea, them actually spending some time doing this prison break is needed in many ways.
The same can be said for many other relationships. Sokka and Suki had almost no screen time together early on and then they got together. Then Suki got captured. And then they didn't really have a lot of screen time together till the prison break episode.

Heck in Korra the only relationships with screen time have been the korra train wrecks. I think it's an emphasis in this writing team that when a relationship will work they get no screen time.

Heck were supposed to assume the street rat guy (whats his face) is happy with jinorah. And they've literally had no screen time. At least Opal and Bolin have better drama and they're working through it realistically.

You miss the other part of my point, with the limited screentime they have had they have been on the rocks because of the larger storyline. Let me put into perspective what is wrong with this relationship, I get Opal being mega-pissed at Bolin, but that is it. I never got a sense of amblivilance here. Yea, she is mad at him, but at least she should be happy that he is alive and has seen the light. That is my main beef with the romance, ever since Season 4 started, there has been no tenderness, only bitterness on the part of Opal.
The more I think about it, the more Opal's offer just comes across as spiteful and downright manpiplatiave, taking advantage of his vulnerability and desperation more then a genuine sense of love. It isn't unfixible but I need some passion here.

Oh yeah. I definitely agree. Opal has been extremely spiteful so far and not willing at all to put herself in his shoes. Definitely dislike what they did with her character since season 3. But still my favorite pairing outside of Varric and Zhu Li.

Opal definitely has reasons to be pissed off. But when
your missing boy friend shows up after ages of missing and you can only still frown theres something meased up. She was almost entirely blaming him. At the end it seems like she realizes once again he's not a bad guy and asks for his help. I don't see it as manipulative as much as her knowing she needs help and also looking for an excuse to make things better with him. Kill two birds with one stone

Fair enough for the moment, I suppose a lot of my concerns hinge on the next few episodes. Also, thinking about it Opal's spitefulness may just be fridge brilliance.

For those awake Episode 9 "Beyond the Wilds" is up on Nick now http://www.nick.com/videos/clip/the-legend-of-korra-222-full-episode-m3tf.html
The spirit vines in Republic City start abducting people and it’s up to Korra to figure out why.

Gotta love the music in the Opal and Bolin picnic scene. Almost thought the Opal-is-evil people were going to have their revenge.

Felt like a Book 3 episode, and I really hope this trend continues. I want Book 3 and Book 4 to compliment each other by the time the show ends so I can at least say I truly enjoyed half of The Legend of Korra.

Really boring episode. I know it bad to just say that and not give reasons but whatevs. Basically, im only watching the show now out of loyalty to the original series plus ive already come this far. I will say this episode has given me encouragement though for some shit im going through in my own life so there's that.

Also, one other thing - I'm surprised we didn't have Toph in the swamp going after Kuvira's forces once they started chopping up the vines/roots. Although Kuvira had innumerable forces at the tree, I half expected Toph to challenge her and Kuvira defeat her and prove herself the better metal bender. Unless Toph's time on the show was more like an extended cameo, and she's not coming back.

I'm sure Toph will show up in the next episode as she's got to eventually show up at some point. Why else would you place those two characters within close proximity if they're not going to bother having them meet in some form.
Also Mike in a Q&A
a couple weeks ago did imply that Toph would be returning again.
Mike: She would need a pretty compelling reason to do so. I think she's really enjoying her alone time!
Kuvira slowly cutting down the Banyan-grove Swamp tree would be compelling enough reason for Toph to return I would say.

Kuvira could potentially have all of the Beifongs in her grasp if things go her way.

Meh. A setup episode. Nothing exciting or interesting happened until
Korra met Zaheer
, and that only lasted a few minutes and it was over. The rest of it was just putting the characters in place for what they'll be doing up to the Finale. They didn't even touch upon what's going on at the Swamp.

Not a really bad episode I suppose, but I was expecting a much more triumphant return after the clip show last week. I guess the next one is where things will finally get moving. Hopefully.

Also, while a bit trivial, I really didn't like how Opal talked about being "won back". Sure, Bolin's the one that brought it up, but her rolling with it didn't seem right. She has a good reason to be pissed, but it kinda seems like she doesn't care about Bolin anymore and is just using him as extra manpower on her mission with Lin. Maybe I'm just overreacting, but that rubbed me the wrong way.

Ha this line describes this season so well.

They should have just switched Toph and have
the encounter with Zaheer
last longer. As it was now, 'training' with Toph was pretty useless. Just keep her scenes for removing the metal and introducing the tree and make Korra's spiritual redemption with
Zaheer
last longer.

A lot about Korra's recovery bugs me. We have the whole 'training with Toph in the swamp' thing which goes on for ages, and then turns out didn't fix it.
Now she had a chat with Zaheer and that's supposed to have fixed it
. But we still don't know what the deal is with weird avatar state spirit Korra, or why that dog spirit could see it, so I'm worried it's going to drag on even longer.

I just noticed that after every main character was paired up with another the only two left are Mako and Korra.
Makorra returns!

So Korra's has been in Republic City for a couple of episodes now wonder if she took the time time to tell Lin about Toph or anyone for that matter. Going to be quite the strained reunion when Lin, Suyin and Toph finally reunite after all those years.

RIP Bolin/Varrick. You will be missed.

Poor Varrick, working with Asami. Story-wise that makes sense, but goodbye character relevance. At least Year of the Bolin will continue.

I would like to equate this season to a F1 car on a frozen lake. Yes the car is pretty to look at and there is a lot happening with it, but even as it tries to move it does not gain traction and go anywhere.

Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh....

It was good, but some things annoyed me.

Korra: "I can't do it!"

Everyone including fucking Zaheer: "Yes you can!"

Korra: "Ok."

End.

Also,

Zaheer: "LIMITLESS!!!!!"

Korra will
pierce the heavens and defeat Kuvira.

Joking aside, I did enjoy seeing Izumi speak, although it's been 100 years since the war so I'm not sure what she's on about entering conflicts. Seems pretty silly that no one is drawing comparisons to the Fire Nation War, especially with the "camps" now out in play (they weren't mentioned in this episode).

Seeing Zaheer was cool, but I wish they did more with it, maybe they will.

Also, the Bolin x Opal stuff was so annoying. Bolin really is an idiot.

I'd give it a B, but the real star is the hair artists. I think some of the A team was working for a change

I was thinking this, too. Loved the way Korra's hair is here, especially.

Bringing in Zaheer again is great, glad they're keeping in line with his character in that he's not pure evil or anything and recognizes what he's done indirectly with Kuvira coming to power. (Also, Tuck lost a bet here, even though he lost it last episode. lol). Izumi seems cool so far, but I hope she gets more screentime. Ravaa coming back was cool, so does this mean she has her link back with the other Avatars?

Bolin going in to help Opal was going to happen, so no surprise there. But Lin was back so it's all good. Maybe Asami and Varrick will be fun to watch together at least. Hope to see more Kuvira wrecking shit next episode, maybe a Zaheer vs Kuvira? DO WANT
Anyways, good episode. Red Lotus' theme returning was great.

"People used to think I was unstoppable" LOL when was that? Zaheer defeated you. Unalook defeated you. Amon defeated you twice. Tarrlok defeated you. There absolutely no point in the show where Korra has been considered unstoppable.

Why is Zaheer helping her? They killed his allies and put him in jail. Then they come back with some sob story about how Kuveira is the worst person ever, as if it is a well known fact when Variick and Bolin were there travelling in the army and they had no clue and no one has produced a single thread of evidence to show anyone. And not only does he buy it, he wants absolutely nothing in return for helping Korra take down Kuveira so she can install an unelected idiot as monarch in its place. What the hell is going on?

Opal is breaking her Air Nation vows and is using his misplaced guilt to string Bolin into a suicide mission. Maybe if they actually spent their time finding evidence of Kuveira's crimes then none of that would have been necessary huh? Or maybe if Korra wasn't such a delicate flower and could actually win a battle without deus ex for once in her life? Her mother tried to assassinate someone in her sleep. Pretty sure that's a war crime. Whereas Kuveira challenged Korra to a fair duel and kept to her side of the bargain.

Varrick is the best character in the show. He didn't come in grovelling and whining about having them forgive him for his "alleged" crimes. Instead he stays defiant and confident and gets Asami to act as his new Zhu'li. Why can't a man burn down his own belongings for sure.

It's only been about 60-70 years since the end of the war hasn't it?

About the same time since WWII ended and I think a similar attitude of not wanting to get involved in any wars is still present in Germany.

Yup. Even the people who weren't there remember it like it was yesterday. It's drilled into them.

Maybe she was talking about the avatar as a concept, not necessarily herself.

My bad, confused the length of time that passed with the war's title.

Still, interesting comparison. Thinking about the political webs that entangle current conflicts of mass terror, I suppose you're right. Although that isn't exactly transparent in the show leading to what I said before.

Zaheer is basically Hannibal Lecter now.

I think she, like most leaders would be, is paranoid about repeating history. If it were about defense she'd be fine with it, but she doesn't want to invade again. It'd be like if Poland got taken over by a dictator and the world leaders said "Okay Germany, we need you to help us invade Poland." Probably wouldn't fly over well with most people.

Edit: Someone already made the WW II comparison.

The war lasted 100 years, but it happened in Katara/Zukko/Toph's lifetime, so I'd guess we're talking ~70 years ago. That being said, Bumi was over 110 years old, so it's not like the characters here couldn't be of similar age.

So why is Opal evil? Confused.

Because she's blinded by revenge and can't rationalize her way out of it because of the confusion caused by wanting to forgive Bolin but not being able to. I think Bolin is either going to be the one to talk her down from doing something horrible or he's going to be killed/critically injured and Opal's gonna feel like shit because of it since he only came along to win her back.

I enjoyed that! I was hoping Korra would break Zaheer out of prison, but thats a bit unrealistic and I don't know if that would have actually helped. Can't wait for Korra to pull of some crazy shit now that she has "unlimited power". Like, she is going to EARTH bend.

Pretty good, had a few issues with it ('I felt a spiritual disturbance!' I mean come on) but I did like Korea's confrontation with zaheer, and her calling him out on the fact that he caused Kubota to come to power. Not sure if I quite buy him being willing to help her but I think it worked. Enjoying seeing the republic city wilds being a bit crazy due to things happening in the swamp, wish we saw more of that.

Edit: yeah also not sure about izumi being no vehemently against fighting. Eh, felted a bit forced.

It was pretty good episode besides the usual nitpicks. The direction I'm seeing so far makes it seem that Wu is still going to be King. Which is gonna be so goddamn awful if/when it happens. Still kinda upsetting that they went with more of the Hitler route with Kurviva rather than Mao/Chiang. Ya know? Post-Second industrial revolution Chinese manifesto of an authoritarian state to achieve rapid modernization. For a billion hearts to beat as one, they all have to be repressed as one, etc etc. Ah well, they always did only probe the surface of the expansion of ideas from the Interwar period. Too bad Korra herself barely even touch these ideas presented by her villains.

The fact that Wu was present at that meeting makes me rage. Why the fuck is raiko in power?

I have this horrible misgiving that Bolin is going to kick the bucket at the end of the show.
It's like even the writers have clenched he's too stupid to be alive.
