Star Wars The Force Awakens Trailer

That lightsaber design doesn't make sense. The cross guard is supposed to protect you if a sword slips down the blade. But in that lightsaber, another saber would just cut right through if it fell through that corner.

Tiny nitpick though. Looks exciting. You can already tell from those shaky cam shots that it's a different director.

Am I alone in liking Abram's Star Trek?

I liked both quite a bit, but the second one has some problems for sure. The first one though? Had me asking "Why doesn't this dude do Star Wars!?" Haha.

I think that if anything, JJ will give Stars Wars its cultural appeal back. General Audiences freaking LOVE his Star Trek movies. I hear tons of teenage guys say they're some of their favorite movies.

Calling it now... That lightsaber is the cooling mechanism and is not actually blades. Also... F me that teaser is some hot shit!!

This a million times. Seriously, who killed all of your inner children?

George Lucas.

edit: beaten by Hagi.

Didn't show much, but it looks fine for a first teaser. Can't wait to see more.

Wait, this is GAF. I'm not supposed to be positive.

I mean, looks like shit, this is going to be shit, the CGI was terrible, the actors can't act based on the one second we saw of each of them, and J. J. Abrams is the worst director in the history of movies.

Am I doing it right?

lol i think people shouldnt read too much into differences of opinions being "hate"

The trailer didnt do much for me and Im a super SW nerd, I ingest it all. Im really not 100% sure why it didn't. Wish it gave me SW goosebumps :( I am hopeful though.

Do people even know what a teaser is? It's supposed to give us the tiniest taste, not full blown dialogue, big set pieces, or little tiny shots of Han, Luke or Leia. When the first official trailer comes and we don't get this, then sure become angry. But untill then shut up and relax.

I think a mod should edit the title

I showed the teaser to my father and he didn't enjoy the soccer ball robot, he said they were killing his childhood.

But he did enjoy the new lightsaber so there's that.

I told him the robot was fucking awesome and to get with the hype.

I don't think Abrams has ever made a good film really, but I also think he was the perfect choice for SW7. His entire career feels like it was building towards making Star Wars.

I think this is going to be the first non-Cameron film to hit two billion.

agreed on both counts.

did the guy at the start steal a stormtrooper suit, I thought all the stomtroopers were clones?

no.

to sum it up in 2 sentences:

1) Clones great to take over galactic republic because well trained, super effiienct and indoctrinated with Order 66

2) Regular conscripts cheaper and available in bigger numbers to keep a terrorizing reign over galactic empire.

(original series never implied that Storm Troopers were clones, not a single time)

wow people really not liking that lightsaber huh

i think it looks cool in the sense that it looks more like it's venting outwards due to it being unstable or makeshift or whatever.

but yeah neat teaser. the x-wing shots and the millennium falcon scene got me really giddy with hype.

I never had one ounce of interest in Star Trek growing up until I saw JJ's movies. Those were so stylish and exciting for me. What was always so cheesy looking scifi finally had a realistic/stylish vibe with some really funny moments.

I wonder what's the scale for the sphere robot.

Because of the soccer ball analogy I always assumed it was that size but what if it's a R2 size? That'd been even dumber!

All I needed was the crackle of a lightsaber to get hyped.

And the new Star Trek films are perfectly good and super entertaining sci-fi adventures, I enjoyed them.

I loved Star Wars as a kid but over the years, my interest has waned. But I gotta say, the end of the teaser with the Millennium Falcon brought me back like 30 years.

To be fair lightsabers are pretty impractical.

Of course, but they were simple variations on real weapons. Lightsabers were katana, the double sided blade from the Phantom Menace (yech) was a double bladed sword staff.

This is... a katana with kunai jutting out of the sides?

to be fair, like 80% and upwards of this thread is people being hyped and positive about this.

Only a handful of people didn't like it at all, some people have issues with Abrams as a director in general, and a few just think the crossguards on the lightsaber look dumb.

but in general, i think GAF loves this teaser. (unlike the Jurassic World Trailer)

Well, that was pretty much what we all expected. It's full of the kinetic action and dynamic camera shots that Abrams already displayed in his two Trek films. Basically proving to everyone that this is not going to be more of the boring, uninspired, old-man-sipping-coffee-take that Lucas delivered last time around.

But man, that lightsaber design looks dumb.

Didn't really like the teaser. Star Wars isn't a tense sci-fi thriller, it's an epic adventure serial turned into a full length movie. :/

That lightsaber was pretty dumb.

Well take a look at the other SW teaser trailers... and tell me they don't show you more. That's what I am comparing it to in terms of content.

I'm just waiting for the first "This movie is worse than Episode II" post after it comes out. Shouldn't take long. :lol

apart from him not treating franchises (Mission Impossible, Star Trek) you care about (?) well in your opinion, what's your problem with Super 8? It was a decent love letter to 80s adventures movies and i liked it a lot.
I'm not sure what the first part means, I don't care about MI or Star Trek, or Star Wars for that matter. Some films in those franchises are good, some aren't. It's not like I think MI3 is an affront to the quality of the first one or something.

I actually thought Super 8 was the worst of his films. I haven't seen it since release though, so I couldn't give you a detailed explanation for why I don't like it.

Regardless, I think he was the right guy to head SW7. I was very surprised when they announced it, but it also seemed like the most obvious thing in the world.

That's my feeling as well.

I liked his mission impossible too. Abrams makes movies that are entertaining but lack depth. That's ok, they're usually fun rides and his style should translate well to Star Wars.

The only problem I had with the Star Trek movies was how much they borrowed from previous movies.

If he does that with Star Wars I will feel disappointed for sure. But his directing style really fits this universe so at least there's that.
