That's my biggest problem with it. The crossguard is ineffective. It's been well established that a lightsaber can cut through and destroy the handle.

It doesn't matter if its functional or not. It was made by the user. We know that sith are cocky. He (she) likes the look of it. It won't cut his hand off because he the force is with him.

It could also be an old sith artifact.

The fact that's the only negative says something, JJ won.

It's not like the JW trailer where you had tons of awful to pick apart

To be fair, the JW trailer was much longer and had more to pick at.

But pretty much no one in here is criticizing:

  • The effects
  • The casting choices
  • The costumes
  • The premise of the movie

All of which came up in that JW thread. Here it's the practicality and science behind a crossguard lightsaber.

Though I'm also coming around to the idea of the saber being too powerful and it's just stuff shooting out of the sides.

Ok, say the crossguard metal isn't mandalorian iron, and a lightsaber can cut through it, there's still a "light" coming from the hilt that'll stop the opposing saber. But it doesn't matter, since I now proclaim it to be mandalorian iron and cannot be cut by a lightsaber.

That's my biggest problem with it. The crossguard is ineffective. It's been well established that a lightsaber can cut through and destroy the handle.

See my response above, and I don't agree that it's been well established that a lightsaber can cut through the crossguard, as there are materials in the Canon (Clone wars) that can withstand lightsabers.

I can not fathom why people are making a fuss about the hilt of that sword.
It is something new and something (most of us at least) we haven't seen yet.

Im paying for this movie to have my brain taken to a different kind of place and time and this is exactly what that does. It took me back to my childhood and it has already generated buzz for my future, what else do you want.

People yelling : It isn't practical! : can get off my back because I assume that a sith lord sure as shit knows how to wield that thing better than any of the haters around here.
(sorry I had to get that off my chest)

my literal actual only problem with this teaser is the bass in that version of the star wars theme, does it sound blown the hell out to anyone else?

I don't even understand how they found her.

I don't completely understand how the auditioning process works but I believe it's more a case of the movie team picking people out of a list of applicants rather than seeking them out. So in this case Daisy's agent might be responsible for getting her application through to Abrams and co in the first place. Though I think there's many precedents for dircectors or casters immediately having a person in mind/approaching someone for a role with the script.

Someone who is more knowledgeable can maybe correct me?

Maul's double saber was cut through, Anakin's 2nd saber he used against Dooku was cut through.

As a defender of the new saber (can't believe that's a thing I identify as...):

Maybe they developed a new alloy that resists lightsabers?
Maybe the beams that are emitted through the "ports" would still block any saber that cuts through the sheath around them?
Maybe it's incredibly cool looking—in my opinion—and just as impractical as the original lightsabers so who gives a shit?

Has anyone pointed out that the sole purpose of the crossguard might be to prevent someone from reaching in and attempting to disarm? There was one notable moment at least in RotS where Anakin and Obi-Wan grab each others' sword hands and wrestle about for a bit.

Since the blades seem to "stick" in almost all instances of Star Wars canon, the sliding down and cutting off the metal doesn't seem to be much of a concern. It also provides a few extra options in close quarters and has the psychological benefit of looking raw as fuck and intimidating the opponent.

Chillax, internet.

Has there been any mention of the other sith? I was under the impression there is always 2 (A master and an apprentice)

Which one is the guy we see in the trailer?

So I went back and rewatched all the prequel trailers, damn PM has aged horribly...yet Revenge of the Sith looks great, I actually felt a lot of excitement watching ROTS trailer, it was a good star wars movie .

We don't know if this guy believes he's sith, or if he does, that the rule even applies still.

Fair enough. I guess I should stop assuming things, haha.

I still believe ROTS is a better movie overall than Return of the Jedi is. There's some really good moments in it, despite the really bad ones.

I really didn't like the entire Ewok/Endor sequence at the end of Jedi. At all.

starwars-obsessed-GAF, will you cry if either Luke or Han Solo die in any of the 3 remaining episodes??

I am dreading seeing Luke die and turn to light, I will feel like shit but It's totally happening, I can feel it.

Maul's Saber clearly has two crystals and othere sabers are cut through below the crystal. This Saber appears to have the cross hilt as byproduct of a singular crystal. We know nothing of the mechanics. The diagram posted makes sense (as much sense as you need to make in a sci-fi fantasy film).

But by all means, continue to worry about it ☺

if dissenters have to scourer and scrounge to nit-pick the hilt of a lightsabre,,

I call that a win

Pretty much. There's very little to nitpick about in there, the effects shots, the music, etc, all pretty great and fairly promising.

I still think the design of that lightsaber is open for criticism, and I am on the "it looks dumb and those are useless additions" side of that particular lightsaber. There's no rhyme or reason to it, and it's very difficult to think of a common scenario where that would come in handy.

Goddammit, I forgot about the Rule of Two. I was hoping to see a huge sith vs jedi battle at some point in the new trilogy.

Again, we still don't know the history behind that lightsaber or why it's different.

Could be an ancient design
Could be a new design
Could be experimental design that the creator messed with

I am sure there is a purpose, let's wait and see before we draw conclusions.

However if people don't like the look in general that is certainly a valid opinion.

People misunderstand this all the time. The Rule of Two established by Darth Bane is the system where there is always only a master and an apprentice, because the infighting will always occur if there are more than that until they basically get reduced to two anyway. That doesn't mean that there's some universal/force law that makes sure that there are always two living Sith in existence, the doctrine just has to have no more or no less for the system to work.

Once Palpatine died, it's very possible that the Sith died with him, and that whoever the dude in the trailer is, is the only "Sith" in existence until he finds an apprentice.

It's equally possible he's the apprentice of a Master who has not been revealed.

Not harping on you about this, people just sometimes treat the Rule of Two as some sort of universal truth, when it's just a system of rule that goes away if all the sith are dead, or if someone chooses to do something different.

Hyped as fuck for the movie, btw.

The crossguard is fine, you mothafuckahs acting like they're gonna be doing precision cuts at it. Even if they did it would just result in the persons fingers getting cut anyway. Which begs the question. Why didn't they do that before the crossguards?

I'm not obsessed, but no.

It looks cool. That's enough reason for me. Are we going to search for the logical fallacies in everything in the movie? I am sure there are plenty more but who cares.

Is this explicitly stated though? With the level of details there is in the Expanded Universe, I'm surprised it's not stated anywhere that lightsabers "stick", if they are really intended to.

New Star Wars trailer comes out. 99% of the conversation is bitching about the lightsaber design. It looks better than Maul's dumbass staff or whatever.

I'm excited to see what they do with Boyega's character. Haven't really been following the spoilers or anything like that.

I'm not obsessed but if done right, I'd cry.

that's what I hate about these new episodes, the fates of luke, Solo and Leia are again at the mercy of the script. now we get to know what happens to them instead of imagining ourselves what is their final place in the story.

Luke prevailed as the ultimate hero in science fiction in 1977 at the end of Return of the Jedi.

36 years pass and now he may get killed to give way to some lame new hero, fuck everyone involved in that decision if it happens.

:(

This. People are seriously bitching non stop about the hilt on a laser sword? Who gives a shit, rest of the trailer looked fantastic.

You know it's gonna happen. Luke will be the new Obi Wan.

It looks so good. Is the guy at the start the lead character?

Love the sith new dark style, I hope the tone of that scene will be common in these new movies. The sith are far cooler than the light side, come on JJ make these films about the sith!!
