Star Wars The Force Awakens Trailer

Whatever that soccer-ball with R2 noises is, will annoy the ever loving crap out of me, I can feel it. Luke is going to fight that dark jedi in the forest, and everything else has the hype turned up: XWings Over Water, Millennium Falcon shot, the actually menacing looking Storm Troopers

Probably posted a ton already but that new lightsaber is totally just Henry's from No More Heroes.

that's what I hate about these new episodes, the fates of luke, Solo and Leia are again at the mercy of the script. now we get to know what happens to them instead of imagining ourselves what is their final place in the story.

Luke prevailed as the ultimate hero in science fiction in 1977 at the end of Return of the Jedi.

36 years pass and now he may get killed to give way to some lame new hero, fuck everyone involved in that decision if it happens.

:(

1983, man. Cmon!

If he turns up, after Abrams resorted to copying storylines from old Star Trek movies after one film, I'm going to lose a lot of faith. He's got problems if he takes over longstanding franchises with literally an entire galaxy to explore and has to raid past instalments that were neatly tied up for ideas.

Exactly. It'd show he's more interested in nostalgia-faps than fleshing out the universe and going to interesting places.

Pretty much. There's very little to nitpick about in there, the effects shots, the music, etc, all pretty great and fairly promising.

I still think the design of that lightsaber is open for criticism, and I am on the "it looks dumb and those are useless additions" side of that particular lightsaber. There's no rhyme or reason to it, and it's very difficult to think of a common scenario where that would come in handy.

Yo that'd actually be kind of tight if that works the way your image makes it seem, if he could throw each of the little pieces of his saber as like a dagger, could lead to some cools fights.

For people who are new to Star Wars or are not huge fans of it, this isn't a very good trailer.

I mean... what's the premise of the movie?

Did you see the first teaser for Super 8.

What was the premise of that?

Edit: As others have said, teasers rarely give any story or character details. They're simply to let you know a movie exists.

I really don't understand this line of thinking. Rationality pretty much goes out the window when watching Star Wars, and that's okay! I mean, shit, shouldn't a rational mind flip out at something as un-aerodynamic as the Millennium Falcon doing that maneuver? Or really any Star Wars ship flying in atmo?

Rules of the universe easily explain that away. The MF has dampers that are beyond anything we'll have for hundreds of years. Boom, explained away in a manner I can accept.

The sabers are coming out the fucking sides. I would have been ok with it were not for the fact that the beam has to be going through that part of the hilt anyway. I would have been ok with it in that regard I think.

However light-sabres by their very design have never been very practical, (talk about bringing a sword to a gun fight)

They are more status symbols that the most practical of weapons.

Having a lengthy debate about radicalised design choices is kinda odd

Well they seem quite effective against any projectiles since the Jedi wielders seem to have almost ESP-like qualities as far as using them as offensive and defensive weapons. My point was that lightsabers had real world analogues and that's part of what made me forget about how unpractical and fantasy-like they were; they may as well have been sword staffs and katanas instead of plasma-like light beams. That is, except whatever this new saber is, which seems like a poor mod.

I just wanna say again that the shape, form, or function of the hilt as we know it has ZERO bearing on the film's actual quality, but I can see why so many have opinions on it and want to discuss it (not including those just making insulting drive-by posts about it). It's more annoying to those who aggressively try to quell that discussion because it's not what they wanna talk about.

Given what's in the teaser trailer, that's really the only drastically "different" thing in it, so of course people will choose a side and talk about it to death because it's a HUGELY iconic and beloved weapon in Star Wars. X-wings, Falcon, etc don't have flashy additions or alterations that change their general form factor.

Hate the VO, the lightsabre, the droid design, and the Falcon shot. Liked what I saw of the direction they are taking the rest of the action shots.

Still not hyped. :(

I find it very hard to buy into these statements without first seeing it being used by the character. There may be some unorthodox way he utilizes it in some unique fighting style that we simply haven't seen yet. If the movie comes out and they are nothing but just added flare to a saber that is used the same as every other one we've seen then okay.

As it stands I can think of more practical reasons for the cross guard saber than I can for Dooku's bent handle and little half guard thing.

I swear to christ that was Cumberbuns doing the VO, btw.

the difference is that it's a hilt design. It doesn't impede the user's ability in certain situations. Even the Staff is reasonable to a degree because it could serve a purpose, but this thing just dumb. If the hilts are EVER used for their intended purpose, a lightsaber has made contact with the hilt and has broken the metal part off. At this point, if you look at Maul's staff getting split in half, then it means the hilt guard will just fall off, slicing your arm off in the process (useless), or it will reveal the beam of light going out of the crystal in the main hilt and there was no point in the metal guard to start with. It's just stupid.

From what I've read, it's pretty non functional and mostly ornamental/ traditional. It's harder to use, but there's some kind of advantage to those who master it (can't remember exactly what the advantage is though.)

Wow... actually LOOKS like the star wars movie I've imagined. Unlike the prequels which looked like saturday morning CG garbage. Unlike the Jurassic Park trailer this one has raised my hype significantly.

I think this:

Looks dumber than the broadsword

How so? It makes sense in a way, he is a cyborg after all, his surgical precision with multiple lightsabers at once would be deadly against any other non-jedi mortals, he could wipe an entire squad of rebels in seconds.

Now that we are talking about dumb, overdone designs, here is a good example:

Cross-Guard
On a sword, the crossguard (or cross-guard, also known as quillons[1]), is a bar of metal at right angles to the blade, placed between the blade and the hilt. The crossguard was developed in the European sword around the 10th century for the protection of the wielder's hand.

i always thought that count dooku's curved hilt lightsaber was weird

I can't look at that saber for more than a few seconds without laughing.

Ooohh lordy.

I'll the give new saber the edge on that one since it doesn't make me go into giggle fits.

Isn't the bent handle an arab thing? I always thought that those curved arab swords was to confuse other sword fighters so they couldn't really figure out where the tip of the sword would hit them (or something along those lines)

Kind of off topic but what happened to the 3D re-releases? Did they cancel the rest after Phantom Menace?

I paid to go see that because I wanted to support it. Was looking forward to A New Hope in theatres again.

Episode 2 was actually finished and was screened at Star Wars Celebration Europe II. The theatrical screenings though obviously got canned. It's unknown if Episode 3 ever finished it's 3D conversion but it might have been, since it was to release soon after Ep2 which they did finish.

I mean it's obvious that the design is inspired from European swords. The conversation was almost certainly something like:

JJ: So we need to do something cool and new with lightsabers because the masters at Disney want to sell new toys. Lucas used Katanas as an inspiration, and those were Japanese. Maybe for the Sith we could use some other familiar design.

XX: Well, the Sith are powerful and brazen.

XX: Like a Claymore!

JJ: Perfect! Let's go with it. It juxtaposes the eastern themes of the old trilogy with European ones in this trilogy. It's like poetry.

I don't get the problem. It's to allow it to be used in a fight scene where someone's saber slides down the blade and then gets caught. Once you use film logic, and not reddit logic, you're fine.

After the JP trailer I was expecting something shitty, quite surprised that it was pretty damn good and also, those seem to be vents on the lightsaber.
