Y'all can thank my 6 year old for asking me "Why is the bad guy shooting at the other bad guy and not Captain Solo's falcon?"
The force is strong in that one.

60fps X-wing and Falcon gifs are amazing.
Was there ever clarity on why Abrams isn't doing 8 and 9?
Step up from the Prequels. At least there is some hint of emotion. I would still prefer the action to very quick and frantic like in the OG trilogy.
Lucas and "not going for stupid shit"? LOLYou dont fuck with lightsabers, I knew it when Lucas wasnt on board, he would never ever go with this stupid shit, it loses the elegant of the weapon, now it looks all Sweinder or something.
Really bad.
Young children. Doing all three, he'd completely miss out on their lives. Was there ever clarity on why Abrams isn't doing 8 and 9?
He didn't want to even do this one. He turned it down at first.
Rian Johnson is doing VIII.
Not really. I suspect that they just want to have some diversity from film to film, and IX will also have a different director, but he could've had contractual conflicts or just didn't want to do all three of them.
WTF, it's like his dream. I would fight in gladiator duels to the death to direct Star Wars if I was a big shot director.
I guess the future users of the lightsabers have learned the lesson the two skywalker family members learned the hard way...HAVE A FUCKING GUARD ON YOUR LIGHTSABER SO YOU STOP LOSING YOUR BODY PARTS
Every week or two I remember this and get pumped all over again. Before the Disney sale and any of this stuff happening he was #2 on my list of Obviously Won't Happen Dream Directors for a new Star Wars movie (below Edgar Wright).

Switching directors was tradition for the OT.
Not necessarily, I wouldn't think. It's possible though.Creative differences have to come in to play here somewhere right? It seems unlikely that Disney wouldn't want to have him back, and he did do more than one Star Trek film. He also left that franchise just to do Star Wars.
He's only writing IX, there's no director attached yet.Except 8 and 9 are going to have the same director.
JJ didn't want to go through the bullshit of rushing a film out for a release date again like he's had to with this one.Creative differences have to come in to play here somewhere right? Also lol at people saying this is worse than dual blade sabers.
Lucas made even more changes to those before they were released on Blu-Ray. Probably the most disliked change was Vader's quite contemplation while Luke is being killed by the Emperor being replaced with him saying "no... NOOOOOO". Pretty much just confirming that Lucas hates Star Wars fans and just wanted to piss them off one last time before selling to Disney.
There have been rumors for some time now that the OT - pre-Special Editions - are going to be released on Blu-ray in the foreseeable future. My thought is releasing them as part of the marketing push for Ep7 would make a lot of sense.

Oh shit, I didn't know he changed it even further then the Special Editions. I just ordered that set on lightning deal this afternoon. Going to go cancel it now.
he studied previous jedis and decided to opt for one. it's a metaphor for abrams who doesn't want to repeat lucas' fuckery. learn from their mistakes.
Wasn't enev Christmas 2015 a compromise? The original date was summer 2015, no?

it's much worse for me. at least the dual lightsaber had a purpose
granted, we don't know how it will work, and I trust Abrams, so it might end up being the coolest shit ever
If you wanna look at it with that metatextual eye: If the main villain is some sort of Star Wars fanboy who thinks he knows how the Star Wars Universe works better than everyone else does, It's sorta like how the Incredibles' villain isn't a regular supervillain, it's something even scarier: a die-hard superhero fan.
I'm over that hyperactive, mega-choreographed stuff. In a perfect world the Ep7-9 duels would be closer to this:
One of the greatest sword fights ever
Tense, scary, realistic.
Saberstaff was just Lucas fucking around, reading expanded universe novels trying to incorporate it into canon history made me laugh. With saberstaff, a lot of your movements are limited, the only advantage of using one is not many people are used to fighting against one.it's much worse for me. at least the dual lightsaber had a purpose

What the fuck? That's horrible.

I've kind of been a defender of the special editions over the years, but the changes to the Blu Ray version with the "NOOOOOO" added to a far more important scene than Han shooting first drove me over to the "Fuck you Lucas" camp. He went too far.

I am like the most accepting SW fan, nothing really bothered me. That pissed me the fuck off, he totally crossed the line. The best scene of the entire series, it was perfect, it's my favorite movie scene of all time and he did that.

I'm trying to keep hope alive that Disney and Fox can come together and release a remastered, unaltered version of the originals some day.

Speaking of fox, can Disney license their drum roll song for the start of the movie

FOX only handles distribution of the movies IIRC
Of course, but I cant understand why having a crossguard is worse than high chance of self-mutilation.You know that light sabers aren't real, right? Most of the techniques used to describe their use are half baked bastardizations of real fencing at best.
