Still prefer this edit though.

Eh, I like the actual design in the trailer way more. This edit just doesn't really read as "lightsaber" to me anymore, but that's just my opinion.

Saw the teaser earlier with my younger brother who's a film editor. After it was done we immediately said at the same time "Yep, that's a JJ Abrams film."

What was the explanation?

I don't remember the story exactly. But he had mechanical legs, like a spider. The storyline was some Sith looking to recruit an apprentice. They went to the home world of the species Darth Maul was apart of (the dudes with the horns) and some, eventually, they got around to bringing Maul back.

The reason I like the hilt is because it suggests that the swords will have heft to them - like their medieval counterparts - as Lucas conveyed in the original trilogy. The sword fighting in the OT, although arguably too slow, gave the impression that every swing could be the last one - each one a killing blow. In the PT, specifically AotC and RotS, there were way too many wasted swings, cheapening the combat. I think TPM almost had the right balance - although obiwan didn't help with all that blade twirling (it made more sense for the double sword as opposed to the single blade).

I would welcome the return to broadsword style combat in Star Wars - a physical, brutal combat. It seems to allow for more emotional expression - more character, personalization - rather than the dueling baton twirls (in comparison) that seemingly anyone can do.

Anything could happen. It wouldn't be a straight rip of the EU (now non-canon) story, but they could certainly use elements if they want. It might be a nice nod to their EU fans actually.

yeah for sure. just thrawn himself would make for nice depth in the new saga in terms of fleshing out what the empire's been up to.

Judging by spoilers, in regards to Thrawn, probably not. There's still the 30 year gap inbetween Episodes VI and VII though so that's where the new canon will be playing around for years to come.

Teaser was great. Very excited.

Hilt saber is not good. People saying this way it will save the hand from being lopped off are wrong. The blade from another saber could cut through the hilt emitters and remove the bearer's fingers. If the handle and hilt are strong enough to resist a saber cut then it would make more sense just to have the entire hilt be made of that material completely.

And I'm pretty sure that every hand cut off in the movies was not due to a missing hilt.

Everything in the trailer 'looks' right which is pretty exciting. I can't say it got me as hyped as i thought a new star wars trailer would get me but it makes no difference as i was already hyped as fuck for this movie.

The light sabers in the OT looked SO much better than the ones in the prequels and i find it hard to explain why.

Edit: I quite liked the darth maul design as well, i mean the actual blade itself.

Episode 1 lightsabers were awesome.

I don't mind the lightsaber design seen in the trailer. Its basically a claymore. Its functionality has purpose and is fine.

Been watching reactions on YouTube and it's fun to watch. No other film franchise brings people to tears from 30 secs of film footage.

When zooming in on the shot that comes with the press package, it looks like the hilt is actually -behind- the saber. Perhaps it is some kind of dagger that can be detached?

Holy shit, that looked incredible. I'm back Star Wars. You got me.
