Like honestly I feel that I have no chance of ever hitting anyone with any attack except by chance their attack doesn't just demolish me first and give me 30% damage..

I'm gonna take a break for a while, good games RadioJoNES! Great MetaKnight (and your ROB is a beast lol), not a lot of people seem to be using him this time around. Play you some other time!

Good games as well man. I'm trying to get good as Meta Knight to the point where I can claim his as my main, but that title stays with Robby.

So guys....Yoshi. He's such a well designed character in this game. It seems like all of his moves string together so well when someone really knows how to use him despite air dodges everywhere.

I need some pointers on how to deal with him besides choosing a top 5 character lol.

I'm trying to learn how to play smash better.

Should I be using the c stick for smash attacks or just the a button

I suppose c-stick is better, since you can either dish out a smash attack quickly or charge it if you need to. For instance, it's probably way easier to up smash out of a dash attack with the c-stick than the A button (which is a good way to get in for a quick kill when your opponent has high percentage and is in a position to be punished). I have IRL friends who are better than me at smash that don't use the c-stick though, so it's really up to personal preference.

Depends on if you want to have C-Stick mapped to attack or Smashes (which matters for aerials because C-stick aerials disrupt your momentum for some reason).

Take as much damage as you are comfortable with and then spam side B. Once it gets uncomfortably high, eat something.

For approach, I found out that he can do this: hop, fair, nair, land, jab combo. No landing lag. Zero. So you get two aerials for a safe approach and it's all pretty short and fast. Use ftilt to KO.

Edit: I don't mean intentionally take damage. I mean play him and take damage naturally, and don't get too upset about it. His dash attack is pretty good in FFA.
Thanks, I'll try it out; 10 left for All-Star Hard.

Time to start working on the "Complete Classic @ 9.0 w/ Marth" challenge. Any general tips? I have all of his custom moves unlocked, fwiw.

So I'm not the greatest fighting game player ever, but I did okay at super turbo, third strike, and sf4. I even played quite a bit of melee.

But I think I went about 2 and 48 for losses in online one on one matches.

I feel that I have absolutely no clue why a certain normal beats another and I am tremendously frustrated at the recovery when trying to do anything in the air. Also the fact that there is no high/low mixup is so strange to me. The only mixup seems to be guard or throw or do nothing.

How does this game even fucking work or is it just totally random and im trying to over think it looking for weaknesses and reads in online play?

From what I know, no normal beats any other normal unless that normal has super armor. I've clashed/clinked a smash attack with a neutral a combo attack.

Mixups come in the form of positioning (Trapping characters near the ledge, getting them off the stage, getting them above or below you, etc.) and timing (punishing rolls with down smash or dash attack, punish slower attacks with a powershield or counter, etc.) with your reads.

In the air, you have two jumps. You do not recover them unless you return to the ground or are hit. You need to learn your characters specials such that you can use them to influence your momentum while attempting to recover. Also, you need to mixup your return trajectory. Don't always go straight for the ledge, approach it from above, below, etc.

The game is very far from random.

Maybe this is just related to "causal online play with anybody"...but do people forget the Little Mac counter? As in Down+Special? Won tons of matches simply by just standing there and letting people try and hit me, then dashing away/blocking.

Also, using the plain Wiimote works surprising well, even sort of got used to using the trigger to block/dash!

I think people don't know how to properly deal with counters in general.

C-Stick works most consistently but it's obviously for noobs to insta-smash, my advice is get used to properly timing your inputs with direction+attack to execute smashes consistently based on the situation and spacing them properly,,,then you don't need the C-Stick. ;)

I rarely ever even use it on the GCN controller.

GG Chaos. Was a little bummed out about the lag but I think we managed to have some good fights. That Robin/Peach fight was a battle of mind games after awhile. That Yoshi/Lucina battle was really epic too.

I discovered that just a little lag really makes playing Yoshi a living hell. So difficult to time those small hops, nairs, and air dodges and stuff. And when Zero Suit Samus would rush me, I was having trouble timing the dodges. ZSS is a matchup the computer rarely gives me on random, so clearly I gotta do some practicing.

First of all, stop playing online, play against the cpu and get the basics first. The majority of people playing For Glory are going to demolish you right now.
Start with level 5 and go up when you are being comfortable with that level.
Stick with a character you feel right when attacking.
The easy thing about smash is you dont need to learn combos or any strange stick moves to do different attacks, its a really tactical game where you need to know how to control your character well and play tactics and mind tricks agaisnt the opponent. Its not random, I can assure you that.
But the hard bit comes from learning the basics at first, like when is a good time to shield or use your attacks, and how to recover well (THIS IS ESSENTIAL). After you get that right everything will flow better.

A friend and me started playing Melee with only Links doing Up+B, and when we got we were playing wrong we started to get better until finally even win some competitions in my country.

I kept doing the same attacks over again when I wasn't meaning to :p. That Lucina/Yoshi battle was tense. I got lucky.

Also discovered today that playing around with the custom setups can just ruin the default characters for you. I made a super aggro Yoshi yesterday (3/4th speed, 1/4 defense) that just flies all over the place and nairs/dairs/bairs for days... Gimps like crazy. Playing default Yoshi is no fun any more.

Not as lucky as that Mario/Ike one. :p

...Stupid F-Zero cars. That's what I get for standing around like a doofus.

Anybody want to be truly masochistically murdered in this game online, no matter how good you think you are, add - "Latedog". The guy is insane and it's like playing a perfect robot! This guy does shit like this and this...on a keyboard!

So if you're feeling extra masochistic, add this guy and enjoy. xD

After a few days I'm finally getting back into the game. I'm trying to complete the challenges. Some of them seem easy but are actually a pain.
