Dragon Age: Inquisition PC performance thread

For some reason the game usually crashes the first time I open it, and then it's fine after that.

Performance is all over the place if you mess with the settings though. I'll be getting close to constant 60fps, tinker with a few tings and then change them back, and all of a sudden I'm getting 40fps in the same area with constant stutters, regardless of whether or nor I'm in Mantle or DX11.

On the whole I get better performance with Mantle, but every few minutes when a new area is steaming in the background or something I get a sudden drop to 10fps for a second or two before it jumps back which is super annoying.

I just tried it and while it does unlock the loading screens, the black screens that come right after the loading screens fall back down to 30fps and are much longer than I remember.
Yeah it seems when the black screen shows up you are already in game so the limiter starts up, unfortunate but it's still a big difference compared to capping any other way (except manually toggling, but with bandicam that introduces a ton of stuttering). Extra 5-10 seconds vs extra 30-40 seconds for me, and I'm on an SSD.

I really hope a patch fixes this.

When walking around Sky
hold
my fps drops from 60 to 50 for a split second, like it's loading something, then goes back to 60. Really annoying.

Wondering if anyone experienced this. The game would locked if left on the start screen, including menu, between 15-60 seconds. The problem is that the "Loading from server" would take too long and I would not get to choose to continue. Occur since the beginning, but got worse. Now, I probably need to start the game 3-5 times to get to load a save. In game, the game runs perfectly, though.

So I started a game and spawned in what looks like the intro cutscene area.. can't do anything. Twice I've tried to start the game as Rogue and this happens.

Haven't read the whole thread...so here goes.

The game keeps crashing when I am in the options menu. Using i5 4690k@3.5ghz and a gtx 770 (stock settings). I have 16gb of ram.

Also using nvidia's latest drivers: 344.75

I can't seem to use the menus at all. The game keeps crashing. I am using a 360 controller over usb.

huh, i guess I am experiencing the same thing.

now I just got an error in the character creation. Couldn't even minimize the game to see the error window. I had to kill the game in the task manager.

edit: looks like direct x errors. Can't even start the game now. motherfucker. First unity and now this. I might need to take a break from pc gaming or something lol :P

I've read that this can happen if you're running those framerate commands in the OP.

Disable any commands you launched the game with, then when you have control over your character save/quit, re-enter them, then load back up.

Any idea why UI.DrawEnable 0 causes a black screen? I want to disable the mini map, but every time I try this command, the screen goes entirely black.

Figured out a work around for my direct x errors. For now, anyway.

I had to go into geforce experience and override Fullscreen mode with borderless window mode. Then I applied optimal settings.

That seemed to do the trick. Only problem is that when I open the game in borderless window mode it forces me to use my main monitor (if even if it is not set as my primary through the nvidia control panel). Kind of a strange way to implement a window mode. I can't even move it.

I had to disable all other monitors so that I could play the game on my tv.

Hopefully a patch fixes this stuff.

weird. I pulled one of my 970's out and vsync now locks the game @ 60fps where as before, with SLI going, Vsync would drop the frame rate from 70~90 down to around 50 instead of 60.

I still want to get achievements, but turning off Origin seems to get me 1 - 2 fps on average in the benchmark...

Anyway want to make up my mind for me?

Thanks!

The only thing I can advise is make sure your web browser is closed.
Other than that I guess we gotta wait for another update

I did that and turned off vsync. looks like the game ISNT crashing on load screens, it just looks frozen and takes like 5-10 minutes to load the zone.

I'm not joking btw.

So they still havent released a patch for the cut-scene stuttering?

That was my biggest problem, didnt seem to care much about overlays or settings qualities, cutscenes would always stutter really badly and the main game was really smooth.

Unlocking the fps to 60 was the only thing that had a drastic effect, however i seem to be the only one where it was breaking my game. I couldnt get past the first cutscene. Game would dump me in a glitched empty cave. I could get past it by skipping all the scenes but screw that.

So, I've got a low end card (for this game anyway) at the moment (gtx 560ti) but I was able to get the game running aroudn 45/50 fps with occasional dips, but nothing too bother some... except for the terrible stuttering in cutscenes. So I added the command lines
-GameTime.ForceSimRate 30.00+ -GameTime.MaxVariableFPS 30.00 -GameTime.MaxSimFps 30.00
And now the cutscenes are super smooth but the game play is stuttering! It's so annoying, I can have one or the other but not both. Any suggestions?

Edit:

So I got a lot better performance out of just using -GameTime.MaxVariableFPS 30.00, and I haven't noticed too much additional load times. Also, someone said the command breaks multiplayer, how so?

DA:I does require Origin. But really Origin is fine, much better than Steam in many ways.

It lacks some very basic functionality, like screenshots or manual sorting of your library. And, AFAIK, you can't turn off the annoying Achievement sound. Origin is barebones but functional, and nowhere near as bad as most people claim it is. But better than Steam? Nope. Even if Origin has one or two features that Steam doesn't (I honestly don't know which they would be), Steam largely outweights Origin in virtually everything.

That's a new one to me. :(
Mine normally just freezes up for a few secs, jitters a bit then returns to normal.
However last time I booted it up, It crapped out on me on the main menu.

Turning v-sync off defiantly helped me.
Other than that, haven't got a bloody clue.

As to some of those, if you press "print screen" during the game it does save all the screenshots in the Bioware folder (by default in your Documents folder).
e.g. C:\Users\UserName\Documents\Bioware\Dragon Age Inquisition\Screenshots

And the Achievement sound can be disabled (or even replaced). Go to the default Origin folder then into "sounds" folder, then delete or replace the file "Achievement.wav".

Also, someone said the command breaks multiplayer, how so?
afaik, people were saying that about using 60fps with those commands, which would desync things that are meant to be at 30fps in MP. or somthing like that idk lol. not sure if using 30fps will still break things or not, I've just learned to live with the cutscenes since it's not every cutscene that runs like crap.

Worth noting that you have to do this again every time origin updates. It's annoying as hell, I don't see why they don't have an option to disable it.

Seems to be running smooth on my 970. Does anyone else get a slight pause periodically every 30 seconds or so?

I had something like that on my machine (different GFX card from you, though)...fixed it by disabling the Origin overlay. Having the SSAO be any option other than HBAO+ or entirely disabled seemed to exacerbate the problem as well.

That does not sound like running smooth.

I've had a couple pauses but they were always in the same area. As I entered the tavern in Skyhold and a bit past the gates of Haven.

Anyone else running into a glitch where the game occasionally freezes but you still have camera control? Running with a 750ti and an i5 2500k.

Yeah

Happens primarily in and around the central clearing in Haven - when I'm about to enter the specific clearing from any direction. Freezes for a second or two.

On another note:

Have you folks gotten SweetFX to run with this? There's some detail in the textures that I'd like to see.

Thanks, disabling overlay fixed it.

Well it was running at 60fps aside from the periodic pausing. I'm only 1 hour in, so I'm assuming the performance will suffer at some point later on.

Started using RadeonPro for vsync and a few other tweaks and I think I'm getting a lot better performance. I leave Triple Buffering off in RadeonPro though since I think it's always enabled in Frostbite. Don't seem to have any issues with its fps counter and gpu usage meter either.

Game runs super smooth to me at all times. Seems to be a rock solid 60fps with no noticeable drops (outside of the cut scene stutters of course).

i7-4770K - MSI GTX 680 Gaming 4G - 16GB RAM

Everything Ultra, Fade touched textures and 2X MSAA

I am using the command line ""-GameTime.MaxSimFps 45 -GameTime.ForceSimRate 45", instead of 60 because I see drops to about 45 in cut scenes at 60. So 45 seems to alleviate a lot of the stutters while also reducing any noticeable frame rate drops are.

However I do have one VERY odd issue no one else seems to have mentioned. When I am running around in Skyhold there are 3-4 places where I get like a half second freeze every time. Like if I run around in a circle every time I run over a specific point I get the freeze. VERY ODD!

No other issues that I have seen in 30 hours of playing.

What's the most common solution to the cutscene stuttering? I'd like to know how to disable V-Sync as well.

This game really needs a patch.

v-sync is under display options.

If your using an Nvidia gpu, Turn it on under the Nvidia control options. Seems to work fine.

You can take screenshots in Origin and it has built in streaming through Twitch. You can also return any game purchased within 24 hours of playing it or 7 days of buying it, which is excellent. Origin has vastly better customer service/support, which isn't hard compared to Steam but it's better than any of their competition honestly. Origin also has faster downloads speeds. If Origin had Steam's library I'd never use Steam again.

As to DA:I, even with the cutscene "fix" they are really killing the game for me. I think I'll wait until Bioware figures out a way to fix them. It's horrible having this absolutely smooth experience and then getting to a cutscene and having some janky mess playing.

THIS ^

It's been two weeks and still no patch in sight. This is a major problem, too. The game is smooth as butter for me during actual gameplay, but cutscenes freeze up my system for minutes on end and stutter like mad. I can't fully enjoy the game this way since the cutscenes are where most of the story develops.

FIX the freaking game, Bioware.

Edit:

The cutscene fix does absolutely nothing for me.

Uh oh... I Just told my mom to get me this for Christmas. I've got an i7-4770k and a GTX 980, but I also game at 1440p. If the issues aren't resolved by the 25th, I may have to break out my old 900p monitor.

Origin In-game/Overlay is balls though. It gives me problems with external programs like RadeonPro and D3DOverrider whereas Steam and even Uplay don't.

Then switch it off. DA:I has very good alt tab support anyway.

Origin has competent, generous customer support and a non-hideous interface.

The controls are becoming an absolute ball ache for me.

I much prefer DA origins control scheme. I wanna just click on the enemy and the character runs up and attacks.
Holding in the left mouse button for attack is annoying.
It also makes strategics a pain to execute.

Has anyone worked out a control setup that resembles origins at all?

I've got a 1440P monitor and a GTX 980 and it plays fine on Ultra. Only thing I did was turn off MSAA and use post process instead.

I also have a GSync monitor however, which makes it a smoother experience. You might want to lock the framerate if you don't have one.

Honestly, the combat controls much better with gamepad and it seems designed for it. I switched to using a 360 controller for PC, and it plays much better now

The combat is not like DA1
