The crossguard saber is so lame. Not because it looks stupid but because in the other movies, each "new saber" had some functional use or new fighting style, not just for the cool factor or looks.

I guess we'll have to see more of how they plan to use this in the movie.

For people who are like "it protects your hands!"... EVERY OTHER light saber doesn't require a crossguard, why does this one suddenly need one?

Didn't have != doesn't require.

Seriously tho:

John Boyega - black man.
Daisy Ridley - white woman.
Oscar Isaac - guatemalan/cuban/french.
Gwendoline Christie - white woman.
Lupita N'yongo - black woman.
Maisie Richardson-Sellers - black woman.
Christina Chong - asian woman.
Crystal Clarke - black woman.

The first three people on that list are the leads. The next three people are supporting characters with considerable screen-time, reportedly. Also, the word is that Christie's character is a genderswapped version of the role that Cumberbatch almost landed.

They're going out of their way to make the movie look a little more representative of the audience that will be watching it.

I'm not saying you can't feel unimpressed by the diversity in the cast. I'm saying I'd probably disagree with your level of "meh" about it, though.

I'm very happy about the diversity of the cast. :)

If they wanted to really show diversity they would have picked a mixed race or middle eastern guy as the lead. It's frankly insulting that Hollywood still thinks throwing in an african american lead suddenly makes the movie "diverse". There is more to this world than white and black people.

You're right. It's not insulting though. But you've brought up a point which I've brought up before as well. Think about every it's time for a black James Bond thread. The thought never even enters into people's minds that if there is no longer a white british James Bond, he'd automatically be black. There is nearly double the amount of Indian/Pakistani people in the UK than there is black or even Asian. They've been there for longer than a century because of British rule in India. Yet they pale in number to black British in forms of media/culture. Not that this is a bad thing, but I think it's related to the dominance of American culture in the globe. Historically, the US has had a dominant majority white population, a sizeable minority black population, and smaller numbers of Hispanic, Native and Asian Americans. Now, Hispanics. primarily Mexican/Mexican Americans make up almost 18% of the US population and yet are underrepresented in almost all facets of American culture, whether it's sports, media, music, film, literature, television. Asian-Americans are also the fastest growing to where they are now about 6% of the total population.

I'm actually against forced diversity because people might complain. While it's nice to have a diverse cast, I usually would want to go for whoever would fit the role. I also tend to stick to historical versions of characters in my mind.

But back to my point. Whenever it comes to diversity, people bring up casts are all white and then usually the only minority becomes an African-American person. That's how diversity is supposedly achieved. In almost every diversity thread, that is how it's judged. I'm not complaining about there being more black people in films, television, anything. If anything, we'd need more black people plus others. What I've felt is that people still tend to think of diversity in forms of culture only in black or white. Cast is too white? Cast someone who is black, whether it's in games, movies, books, even sports. And before someone jumps off at me, I'm not talking about taking away black roles.

I'm excited as hell for this Star Wars film. I don't even know why reactions to it are verging on racial. John Boyega was solid in Attack the Block, he's going to be great here.

Is getting your hands injured from a saber being swung parallel to your light saber a thing? Because it wasn't for the last 6 movies.

Don't bother, you're not going to convince the people who like it. The guard wouldn't have saved Luke, Vader, or Dooku's hands and the design of the guard wouldn't even protect the saber itself.

Better to just hope they're vents and wait and see how it actually ends up being used.

You think that guy in the trailer has watched the last 6 movies?

I mean, maybe he has, considering the number of people who have their hands cut off.

It still presents a conundrum, They can't retroactively make cross guards useful (unless they pull a Lucas) when no master has ever needed it or would have been saved had they had one. If it works in this new movie, it'll be in spite of all the evidence pointing to them being unnecessary. At that point, there's nothing to do but accept it and move on but it doesn't change how a guard isn't seen being used by any Jedi or Sith spanning multiple generations and skill levels, from padawans to grand masters. Refusing to see how that might be problematic is being willingly obtuse.

How come there ain't no Indians in space? We are some smart motherfuckers, we'd be all up in that Death Star engineering effort. This is an outrage.

Sure they can.

In fact, I'm willing to bet they're on this saber for a specific reason.

So for the thousands of years the Jedi order had been in place, no one was ever clever enough to make guards common place in spite of their obvious utility? This is problematic and no amount of denial is going to change that.

There are other reasons for the "guard" that would circumvent the issue, namely if its primary function isn't as a guard at all. If they're on this saber for some very special and specific reason, that's all well and good, but until we actually see that purpose in action, there's no way to wave away the question of why guards never appeared before.

I've watched this teaser too many times now. I've kind of focused on different elements each time. I just wish there was a way to get a clean mp3 of the music only.

They probably wanted it because it looks cool, sort of how Phantom Menace got the Dual-Sided blade for Darth Maul. People are overthinking these things. There was no logic, no science, nothing behind the choice than they simply wanted change and something that would look cool and differentiate their character from previous ones. I know at least 3 little kids who were blown away by the lightsaber.

I think it looks horrendous and I'm prepared for more changes, but I know why they did it. It's artistic liberty. They're making this their own.

I am actually fine with the lightsaber. I thought it looked horrible in the concept art but in motion it looks awesome.

My theory like some others might have said is that what we saw is a sith wannabe that is in search of more knowledge to use. His travels will lead him to uncover something... Maybe a master or something to that effect... Maybe he is on his own sith trial ..
Either way his saber is poorly constructed because he lacks the true know how and what you are seeing is actually just poor craftsmanship.

With that being said... I like the saber and think it looks pretty bad ass.

It's a fictional universe full of bathrobed space wizards.

They weren't clever enough to realize being sexless monks was a bad fucking idea, either.

There are lots of weapons that have lots of optional safety features that lots of people choose not to implement themselves. There are styles of swords that DON'T HAVE CROSSGUARDS here on Planet Earth. People used (and still use) them.

Are you telling me your capacity for imagination is so limited that you can't even conceive of the possibility someone might come up with an in-story reason to justify the variation on the laser-sword that you've never seen before?

It's a Star Wars movie, for fuck's sake. Internal logical consistency with regard to the world-building's never really been a thing.

Fuck, Artoo-Detoo never had rocket legs till suddenly he had rocket legs.

Who fuckin' cares.

The main Sith dude should be an Indian.

Let's get some fucking gatka up in this bitch.

So I'm assuming John Boyega's just posing as a Stormtrooper? Nicked one of their uniforms and went undercover for some reason, things went pear shaped, he's stranded in the desert. Gonna be weird seeing him in a film of this magnitude, it's a bit different to Attack the Block anyway.

So his accent plus how he was in the trailer he is def some sort of goofball/han solo/swashbuckler type yeah?

Um.. how does a british accent + looking panicked after a plane crash (or whatever) = goofball? Such a weird conclusion to make after only a single shot... which, in the trailer at least, is set up to be pretty sudden and intense. Not sure where you're getting the comedic angle.

Wouldn't be surprised if he's the most comparable to Luke. Do you have any particular reason why such an arc wouldn't work for him?

I think he's probably a deserter. Either that, or he's been stranded from his unit. I bet he's a new recruit who gets tied up in some stuff and ends up turning against The Empire.

In the shot of the stormtroopers preparing for deployment, the middle one is clearly shorter than the others. That's probably Boyega. Probably a wink to the, "aren't you a little short for a stormtrooper?" line.

Just wagged to say you're really hitting the nail on the head here.

My favorite argument this weekend: "What if he drops his lightsaber?!"

What if drops his lightsaber? Come on, guys.

Maybe his sword is different from the others because he fucking likes it.

No one questions Luke's fucking shoes or even really the 'NEED" for different colored sabers, but here we are.

Of all the dumb shit to complain about in a movie series that is inherently fuckin dumb.

I'm confused. Are they going with The Empire still existing, but under different leadership? And did The Empire stop using the clone army?

maybe he doesn't identify as jedi or sith

I'm excited! I like the sense of grittiness; it is the type of realism that the prequels lacked and I can see myself immersed in the environment better already.

The sith guy looks irritated/angry, and I could feel it through that scene; awesome.

Clones died out a long time ago man. Advanced aging. Even by the time the original trilogy rolled around storm troopers were mixed. It was never all clones.

The Clone Wars ended, and most just mixed into the Stormtroopers who were also conscripts and regular folks. As for the rest, we don't know. They officially said though that the expanded universe is no longer considered canon, so anything is fair game now. It seems like the end of Palpatine wasn't necessarily the end of the Empire and the Rebel Alliance still exists, and Imperial Stormtroopers still exist in large patrol numbers.

I'm just surprised they couldn't alter the Stormtrooper costume. It looks budget 1977 style, which I get is for nostalgia, but that's the point of making a movie supposedly set 3 decades more than the last. Let's see modern uniforms, designs etc. It was bad enough how they had to shoehorn in 1970's hairstyles and uniforms into the prequels for continuity.
