Lucas pioneered so many things. Skywalker Sound, Pixar, Industrial Light and Magic.

The big problem is, the prequels really came at a time we had massive increases in quality and visual fidelity after and it's really looking dated at parts. But they are CG magicians. ILM has done the effects for movies like Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, Iron Man 2, Transformers 3: Dark of the Moon. So many firsts in the industry and almost every major cinematic spectacle of recent times has incorporated the amazing people at ILM to help them.

The whole special editions made no sense it removed everything what made the original great but Lucas didn't stop there he also did it again on blu ray. I want a re release of the originals i will buy them another thing i avoided buying the whole box of the blu ray because like i said Lucas fucked it up those where not the movies i grew up with.

IIRC I read something stating Disney was planning on releasing the original unaltered trilogy on Bluray

I don't know how anyone could be excited after the prequels. Hell I was a little kid when I watched Phantom Menace and I still knew the movie was shit (though I enjoyed the effects at the time).

Because JJ Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan had nothing to do with the prequels. And this is a sequel to Return of the Jedi. Prequels have nothing to do with this film. You really don't see how anyone can be excited for this film? I mean it is pretty much the most hyped movie of the past 10 years, easily.

I just rewatched the final fight scene in phantom menace. It starts so well but becomes so empty... Even boring....... some of the angles make the actors look so weird.. It's truly amazing it made it out that way. Likes fight scene in return of the jedi was way more interesting..

They're all going to be stars. Ripley's a sure-fire entry in all 'top 100 sexy' lists in the coming years. Driver I'm not so sure about, he is really great, but he's odd looking, not a likely candidate for a leading man.

I was just giving a different view on the matter. They have everything to prove and the audience has every right to expect dogshit out of this movie. Luckily the aesthetics seem closer to the original trilogy than the prequels.

People are better off looking to Abrams' Star Treks for an indication of quality rather than the prequels.

The thing is, despite being the father of the series, Lucas had evolved into being seen as the vicious gatekeeper, randomly tormenting people who worshiped him. The end of his reign of power is just innately a fresh slate and invigorating in terms of hope for the franchise.

Yeah it kinda drove me nuts when people were pissed at Disney announcing sequels. As if Disney is terrible at acquisitions like Pixar and Marvel, made awful Star Wars prequels, and Abrams is a monster despite his super well-received Star Trek revivals.

There's little reason to think a sequel with respect to the original trilogy it follows is going to be terrible with what we've seen and heard so far.

Well, since you didn't quote that one post by Gambit I assumed you were referring to the whole discussion that had developed about diversity in the franchise and weren't just latching on to one person's extreme (and misinformed) opinion. I apologise for calling it a tantrum, but too many times I've seen people act like not being a racist or sexist is some extremely hard thing for them (stuff like "Opening a door for a woman is sexist now? Guess I'll just have to slam them all in their faces from now on!") and it wasn't clear you were just responding to the one guy.
 
Something which wasn't very visible in low-res gifs/youtube quality was the degree to which the claymore sabre crackles and sparks. That segment of the shot at 1/4 speed:

I'm hoping that Disney Remasters the originals, touches up a few of the things that needed some help, and then call it a day and declare those versions cannon.

I expect this to release in November of 2015.

What are the chances they'll get the rights to do it before Episode VII?
 
I don't own any Star Wars sets on DVD or Blu-ray since I've been holding out for the originals to become available at some point. If that's only a year or so away, I'm thrilled. We're purely speculating at this point, though.

On the one hand, they've got a year, thought next summer would be the best time to release the original versions. On the other hand, they've had a couple of years now to get things rolling and we haven't heard that to be the case at all.
 
I hope Disney and Fox can cooperate on Star Wars (easy money for both sides?) but it hasn't been good on the Marvel side (Disney cancelling various X-Men and F4 stuff as a result).

He's an "R2" type astromech droid. Used for maintenance / diagnostics inside and outside of starships. The R2 series was so widespread / successful, that Fighters like the X-Wing were designed to have a slot where a R2 unit would sit and serve as an "on-board mechanic" as well as navigational aid.

They'd be silly not to. Disney will own all of them bar IV from 2020, so what's Fox going to do? Only release solo copies of A New Hope forever?
 
I fully expect the original three films to be available on Blu-ray by the end of next year. FOX isn't going to refuse to distribute them.

My real hope is that Disney and Lucasfilm quietly place all the "Episode" movies into a separate Star Wars canon... like this:

you are WAAAY off.

Lucasfilm determines this not Disney first of all. second they put out a press release about canon a few months ago. All 6 movies are canon as well as the clone wars animated series and the new rebels animated series.

And guess what The Force Awakens has Episode VII in its opening crawl as well.

Official statement from lucasfilm a few months ago:
"This includes the six Star Wars episodes, and the many hours of content he developed and produced in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. These stories are the immovable objects of Star Wars history, the characters and events to which all other tales must align."

The prequels have been and always will be canon.

I think you're both right, just talking about it differently.

I think Disney know that the prequel trilogy is hated by many people, and for those people, they want to distance those films, and target TFA as the fourth Star Wars film, with a world and tone consistent with the ones they love. At the same time, they want to target it at people who liked the prequels, and children that like the TV show.

It won't be formally isolated canons, but the theatrical cuts should, and I imagine will, be marketed to the original fans as the only Star Wars material that matters, with the exception of the new films coming.

Yes TFA is going to be distanced form prequels for a lot of the marketing aspects but there is one canon in star wars and the prequels are part of it. Prequels officially take place prior to TFA in the film series. They will never be removed from the canon.
