Super Smash Bros. for Wii U |OT| True Potential of Smash Bros.

So after years of unintentionally avoiding Smash I finally decided to really give the series a chance and picked up Smash Wii U. I have next to no fighting game background.

...and boy it shows :-(. Did some For Fun this evening and basically got destroyed. I clearly have no concept of spacing, and am probably the most uber newbie playing the game right now LOL.

It's certainly frustrating. Hopefully with enough practice something will click and I'll start to break through. Or maybe the game just isn't for me. Time will tell.

Any tips that Gaf's experienced Smashers can give someone who's somehow never touched this series until now? Just general tips for getting started.
up B is usually used as a 'third jump' for returns

Learn how to use smash attacks

Play around with several characters and then focus on one or two to practice with

Then just keep playing! Be aggressive and don't fret when you screw up, it's the only way to learn

I've suffered enough, time to take a break.

Sorry for bringing it up and yes I agree.

If you haven't beaten it yet when you try it again know that you can supposedly heal for 50% more if you copy Dedede and use his inhale on the food (I saw this tip but didn't use it because I had completed it already, so I don't know if it really works). You can also pause the game to look around for food if that helps.

Have "fun". >:)

Shit. I DC'd. Might be best for me to quit, my connection has been a bit crappy today. You're definitely a level above me though. I'll get some practice and challenge you again in the near future. :)
No worries, I had fun!

Anyone else want to do some 1v1? I want to see if I like ZSS at all; she seems cool, but I haven't tried her at all.

Yeah I saw that on GameFaqs.
The problem I have with it is that you have to be really, really close to inhale the food.

Thanks.

I'm not experienced, but I never touched the series until now. I am actually using the strategy guide for help.

Pick a character and try to learn it. Know it's strengths and weaknesses. For example, my daughter and I thought Jiggypuff was garbage: no range, low damage, gets kicked around like a puppy. Then I discovered that she kicks ass in the air. Now I rarely stay on the ground and think she is fantastic, probably my favourite character now.

Don't play online. I know this seems counterintuitive, but any input lag plus chaotic or expert play will not teach you anything. You will flail around and lose or get lucky. Play locally with friends or against the CPU.

Ignore esoteric concepts such as "landing lag" for now. Just learn the moves and when they are best used.

You don't always need to shield, try crouching. Likewise, don't forget that you can dodge in the air using the shield button. On a related note, learn what moves cause you to go into free fall, as this will prevent many deaths.

Yea I saw it there too. To be honest I tried it so many freaking times with always the same "strategy" (run around ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ ) but in one of those tries I just managed to do it without having done anything differently, I guess I got lucky on those food spawns. So yea.

Remember to always have fun first. Try a couple of characters and get a feel for it. Focus on those you feel better with, watch a couple of videos of people playing it to kind of "get the picture" and try to get used to shielding/dodging.

PS: I'm not an experienced "Smasher", I suck.

I find it kind of disconcerting how 1v1 For Glory will seemingly sub in a really bad computer if you lose connection to your opponent and that it doesn't even tell you.

Just reminding everyone if anyone overlooked the second post of first page.

Yeah, we have SmashGAF IRC setting up for people to looking for challengers. (right now its kinda bad time since it's getting close to christmas season.

How are the amiibos working out for you dudes? Do they really start to play just like you?

Nope, just counters me. Does some things like me, but not much. Kinda sad since I been training my Fox hardcore trying to get it to dashdance (to see if he'll copy) and stuff. Doesn't ever happen.

He does use Bair and Fair a lot like me. Other than that, he's just an overpowered opponent with no equipment fed to him. :/

Shield Breaker gets me every single time <_<

Good games, Oric!

Same to you, man. Interesting opponent, who constantly keeps me on my toes

I dont think they have enough bytes to allow them to do all too much :P

I kinda wanna play some competitive matches, but not sure how bad the lag may be on my end. I have had some pretty good For Glory matches, but I also get some REALLY bad lag. I fight through all that though; I ain't giving my opponent a free win. Lol

Anyways, if anyone wants to, I'm in Texas, so the closer the better. NNID is my username. :)

3-Stock, No items, Omega Forms + Battlefield, Town and City, and Smashville aloud I guess. Dunno all the tourney legal stages. Lol
