Star Wars The Force Awakens Trailer

So I've been catching up on Star Wars Rebels today. About to start episode 7.

I'm really not liking this so far. :( Then again I didn't enjoy The Clone Wars at first, either. I really hope they can salvage this. I dont care about any of the characters and the plot is a total yawn. If you asked me what the last 6 episodes were about I could hardly tell you. In one ear and out the other. What are they even doing? Meandering around the galaxy doing not much apparently. Occasionally tripping up Imperials in negligible ways. They're the Dennis the Menace of rebels.

If the weilder of this saber hilt jabs, and the handle is made of phrik (or something comparable) I'll eat my imaginary hat. I still think it makes more sense to make the hilt completely out of phrik.

Sadly, I believe we are putting way more thought into this than the creators are.

I'll laugh if it just turns out to be exhaust vents and all the controversy was for naught. Imo, it's the most simple explanation for the design

Yes we probably are, but I'd rather think creatively towards a piece of creative fantasy than knock it and not enjoy it.

My last thought I suppose is that it being a saber hilt provides far more utility when striking against things that aren't energy fields. Where phrik wouldn't have that offensive utility.

I think those opposed are thinking just as creatively. I am very excited for this movie and this weird saber is not going to ruin my enjoyment.

I feel like the illustrators, prop manufacturers, and the rest of the creative team probably care a good deal about what they're doing and have put a lot of thought into it, even if it's not necessarily the same kind of analysis you're doing here.

So my retard theory is that Andy Serkis is doing the voice work for Darth Maul. The Clone Wars is Cannon, and in The Clone War Darth Maul not only survived the events of episode I (barely) but went on the attempt (and fail) to kill Palpatine. Maul begs Palpatine to kill him, and Palpatine says he has other plans for him. He doesn't kill him and we never see him again.

Also Zabrak are exceptionally long lived, they age at about the same rate as Wookies.

Also, Andy Serkis did the voice work for Maul in Episode I, didn't he?

Maul was voiced by Peter Serafinowicz in Episode 1.

I'm glad i brought up how he proposed for JJ to direct Star Wars, back in the Star Trek review.
Can't complain now, though i agree, Abrams energetic style was better suited for SW than ST.

Boring video, like always. All Plinkett does is repeat old worn out "jokes" in his weird voice. When talking about the script he shows Orci & Kurtzman and makes old man Harrison Ford jokes. Yawn.

Has anyone mentioned that the conventional light saber noise is made at the end of the teaser video? This would lend credence to the notion that the light saber portrayed in the teaser is indeed aberrant and somewhat mercurial in terms of its operation.

In b4 Kaeptain and ViewtifulJC come to hate. :P

This particular video was a pretty boring and pointless (even though nitpicking is part of the joke) but other than that, not all Plinkett videos are like this.
They're pretty fun, nitpicky critiques, that some people seem to take like they're meant to be high brow film criticism, instead of simple entertainment.
I mean they even joke about this in their other shows, multiple times (how nitpicky they are).

Felt pretty pointless. I mean the teaser was released to generate hype? Well no shit...

Yeah, all he really seemed to say was "I like Abrams" and "trailer didn't tell me much; it all depends on the script." I did laugh at "everyone can beat up Yoda!" though.

He pretty much stopped doing plinkett in favor of half in the bag, right?

I don't really care about hitb, so I'm hoping this will be enough to have him go back to the structured plinkett reviews.

Best of The Worst is the funniest thing they do.
HitB used to be funnier to me, now it's not really interesting me anymore.

YO you left the door open for me!

So, it was eh. Which is expected. Again, the reason his Star Wars & Star Trek reviews were good were a) he had literally YEARS worth of online discussion and analysis of those movies to metabolize and b) his schtick was still fresh feeling.

Stoklasa killed us all to death with those reviews because he just distilled all the great analysis written by tens of other (better) film writers into a much more easy to digest form, and then performed a very fun character.

Which is why when he goes back to Plinkett now, especially when it's only a couple days after an 88 second commercial has come out, it's so tired and empty. Because he doesn't have that knowledge base to draw from, and Plinkett isn't novel anymore, and even if he was, Stoklasa isn't doing him well anymore.

Trotting him out is just as perfunctory and rote as he makes it sound. Maybe that's part of the joke, but it's basically just that he knows this will give him hits so whether he wants to do it or not, he's gotta do it.

Forgive me if we're already done with this conversation, but:

...would this not be the case?

The physical guard would still be needed to focus or something, otherwise you could just make bits shoot out the side of a normal sabre blade.

If that makes sense? I'm explaining it badly.

Edit: Once the surround of the crossguard is cut, what is maintaining the horizontal blades? That might be clearer, don't know.

Cross guards were designed to stop your hand slipping up to the blade as much as they were for defense, so who cares if it's vulnerable to cutting or not.

This is the most internety internet thread ever. We should time capsule this thread until the year 4500 so that future humans will know exactly what the internet was like in 2014.

No, unless the Cross- Guard is Phrik of Cortosis, a lightsaber will sheer through the metal, as a lightsaber blade is super heated plasma contained in a magnetic field. Besides I don't think any one is arguing the value of a cross guard but arguing how dangerous to the user the two small cross guard blades are.

Humor is fun and all, but that's not why Plinkett was as good as it is. I liked the detailed analysis, but hitb doesn't really offer that last I saw it.

How are lightsabres supposed to work? I always had it in my head that the idea was that the crystal was the last stage in the process, i.e. a power source produces a beam of energy that is fired into the crystal which then produces the blade, which in this case would mean that all you'd need is to split the beam into three with a prism of some sort to produce the two extra blades. Any other way would mean more crystals or something wouldn't it?

I'm not much for technical know-how in the Star Wars universe, so I'm probably a long way off-base.

Omg.....

You know what's funny, if the original sabers looked like that and this new one didn't gave a hilt, people would be outraged too.

I think fans are allowed to be outraged so long as they try not to be jerks. A tall order, sometimes.

That's kinda what I'm suggesting though; it wouldn't matter if an opponent cut part of the metal at the base of the crossguard, as there's just more blade inside it to stop their opponent cutting all the way through to the users' hands.

I just can't...people have literally drawn sketches of alternatives to a sword made of light to make it more "right"? Guys ffs come on now. I will continue to point out that every one of you will see this movie day one. This kind of debate is becoming way too serious for its own good.

.

The crystal more generates the properties needed for the blade, it precedes to be to shaped by the up third of the hilt.

Most sabers have blade length and thickness adjusters.

Loved it. Very excited. Awesome to see a Star Wars movie shot in a modern way. I hope JJ delivers but he just have an OK track record as a director so far.

I agree. JJ has an eye for art direction, sound design, and assembling a good cast. I'm quite critical of his work with Star Trek, but I cannot deny he has done some things very right with the ST movies. I'm looking forward to his Star Wars take.

I don't know enough about how they are supposed to work, but what would happen if the surround on the cross guard was removed? Wouldn't it just be unfocussed energy radiating at that point?

Yeah, fuck people caring about internal consistency and verisimilitude, lets just have talking frogs everywhere since it has laser swords! Fuck it, lets include a pole dancing scene too, and a happy little dance by a gerbil.

Lets have the swords levitate and fight by themselves, since apparently everything is immune to criticism now.

Having fantastical elements increases the need for the explanations they do provide to have internal consistency, and also increases the importance of other aspects of the universe being logical to ensure it feels like a believable world.

Dismissing criticism by saying 'they are light swords lol they don't have to make sense' is missing the point by a large margin.

Guys. It's exhaust. With the side benefit of looking like a crossguard. Because this is Star Wars. And in Star Wars people use space swords. And it looks cool.

This happens with every design that people don't agree on. It's as if people believe they had only ONE design drawn and then decided to go with it. I'm sure all these sketches that people are coming up with have been drawn and presented to the team by other concept artists. In the end, they decided on the one we're getting for a reason.

From my original point of thinking, control over the length/shape of the blade had to be something defined earlier in the process, i.e. before the crystal, which I assumed to be the last item before the blade appeared. Looking at some wiki pages though, I see that isn't the case.

The crystal more generates the properties needed for the blade, it precedes to be to shaped by the up third of the hilt.

Most sabers have blade length and thickness adjusters.

Okay, so it's something more like this?

That being the case, I can understand the hilt/crossguard needing to be made of something impervious to sabre blades.

I really hope it does turn out to be exhaust. The idea of huge, noisy sabre that needs exhaust vents is a neat idea. Like the drag racer of the Lightsabre world.
