Super Smash Bros. for Wii U |OT| True Potential of Smash Bros.

So after years of unintentionally avoiding Smash I finally decided to really give the series a chance and picked up Smash Wii U. I have next to no fighting game background.

...and boy it shows :-(. Did some For Fun this evening and basically got destroyed. I clearly have no concept of spacing, and am probably the most uber newbie playing the game right now LOL.

It's certainly frustrating. Hopefully with enough practice something will click and I'll start to break through. Or maybe the game just isn't for me. Time will tell.

Any tips that Gaf's experienced Smashers can give someone who's somehow never touched this series until now? Just general tips for getting started.

Just focus first on a single character and practice using that one for a lot of times until you get some neat tricks and strategies for all of his/her moves. A CPU enemy is basically the best beginner teacher. If you can beat a Lvl. 9 CPU on a consistent basis then you've learned quite well. CPU sometimes show tricks you can also apply, so might as well have a mirror match of sorts (fight against the same character you are using).

Also, don't mind losing against other people online, especially on For Fun. It's a mode to mess around and not think about losing lol. When I'm in For Fun I just use Wario and troll with the bike.

116/140 challenges!

I think the hardest one will be 8 fever rushes with Dr. Mario.

Is there any way to tell how many blocks I have destroyed total in trophy rush?

Just did true All star without healing using Captain Falcon! That last Justice Knee to kill Game and Watch was filled with my love, my anger, and all of my sorrow!!

Played some 6 player smash yesterday with friends (free for all, 2 vs 2 vs 2, 3 vs 3, items on), some had never played smash, but it didn't matter, we all loved it! We played for a couple of hours and our brains were all fried at the end :P

This is awesome.

I'm finally getting good at 1v1. Managed to hold my own during For Glory and it's so much fun when you're not getting your ass handed to you 9/10 times. My last match had us both at 1 stock with >100% damage and we just kept countering and dodging each other's attacks until I choked. I blame it on my sweaty hands.

Damn, I was going to go with a heavy character, not a light one. Tips?

I did it with Falcon because there's another challenge that requires you use him without healing so I wanted to get both done at once.

Short hop N-air is your friend because it has the least amount of landing lag and also learn the range on his running grab. Every round also has at least one guy that seems more of a jerk than the others. Kill this person IMMEDIATELY.

1st Round: Robin
2nd Round: Lucario, Toon Link
3rd Round: (hardest IMO) Shiek, Pikachu, Ness
4th Round: Falco
5th Round: Dr Mario, Yoshi
6th Round: Samus, but be wary of stray Duck Hunt props.
7th Round: Donkey Kong & Mac. Although they aren't aggressive, it's the fact that they hit so hard and by that point you will be hurting. If they get a single tap in you're likely going to die.

More than anything it's a lot of luck with the stages. If you encounter any walk off stages like Wii Fit Trainer, Colosseum, and Mario Galaxy you want to abuse the side blast zones with grabs as much as possible. The main reason I finally won was going to Mario Circuit for Round 6 and went no damage by abusing the sides with throws. Ended the final round with 311%. XD

I'm managing to get quite decent lately winning most matches in for glory but I still struggle against Luigi, Palutena and Roselina. I main as Fox but also play Sheik and ZSS. Any tips guys I lose to these characters 90% of the time.

I played 8-player Smash the other day. Single-handily justifies the existence of this game. It actually turned out to be super convenient that you can use your 3DS as a controller, makes it easier to actually get 8 controllers together. We had not unlocked all the stages but the stage selection for 8-Player Smash feels a bit anemic. I hope DLC fixes that.
