Synopsis

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies brings to a conclusion the adventures of Bilbo Baggins, Thorin Oakenshield and the Company of Dwarves. Having reclaimed their homeland from the Dragon Smaug, the Company has unwittingly unleashed a deadly force into the world. Enraged, Smaug rains his fiery wrath down upon the defenseless men, women and children of Lake-town.

As darkness converges on their escalating conflict, the races of Dwarves, Elves and Men must decide unite or be destroyed. Bilbo finds himself fighting for his life and the lives of his friends in the epic Battle of the Five Armies, as the future of Middle-earth hangs in the balance.

The future of Middle-earth on film

The facts:

In terms of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, it depends entirely on Middle-earth enterprises, who own the rights. They have many licencees at the moment; WB are just one of them. Future TV series or re-adaptations would be contingent on what happens in the next few years with the two companies. Whether Middle-earth enterprises feel that WB are doing justice to the licence and of course the length of deal and any clauses permitting early termination from either of the parties to the deal.

The Tolkien Estate have no say on the matter regarding the two aforementioned I.Ps.

All other Tolkien works come under the banner of the Tolkien Estate. Once Christopher steps down or passes, either his sister Priscilla Tolkien or possibly his spouse Baillie Tolkien who is a member of the Estate. More likely though are Christopher's two sons and daughter; Adam, Simon and Rachel.

Simon is Christopher's first son from his first marriage. They had a falling out, but have since made amends. Adam has translated his grandfather's works into French and Rachel has shown interest in her grandfather's work. Adam is the most likely successor.

Future generations including Royd Tolkien, who has been an extra in the LOTR trilogy and recently involved in Air New Zealand's Middle-earth promotion, have shown greater willingness than Christopher as regards Tolkien's works. But, as of now, there's very little chance of them becoming literary executors of the Estate, if ever,

In conclusion, The Silmarillion etc; public domain is the most likely. The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings; depends entirely on what Middle-earth enterprises' future plans are.

On public domain:

Essentially, The Silmarillion will enter the public domain 70 years after Christopher's death. It's considered a work of joint authorship under section 10 (1) of the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988:

Works of joint authorship -

(1) In this Part a “work of joint authorship” means a work produced by the collaboration of two or more authors in which the contribution of each author is not distinct from that of the other author or authors.

Duration of copyright in literary, dramatic, musical or artistic works -

(1)The following provisions have effect with respect to the duration of copyright in a literary, dramatic, musical or artistic work.

(2)Copyright expires at the end of the period of 70 years from the end of the calendar year in which the author dies, subject as follows.

Christopher is responsible for a number of chapters in The Silmarillion, and of course, there isn't really clear distinction between Christopher's prose or his father's, thus application of the aforementioned provision and precedents in case law, means that The Silmarillion and The Children of Hurin are works of joint authorship.

Thus in accordance with sections 10 (1), and 12 (2) of the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988, aforementioned works will enter the public domain many years after Christopher's death.

The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit in 2043.

This is the factual and legal position going forward.

I go see them with my brother each year on December 26th. I fall asleep each time. It's a damn shame how these movies turned out as The Hobbit is one of my favorite books of all time. They got greedy as hell.

My yearly 48 FPS movie-going experience. Gonna probably go by myself this time around - went to all of these and the LotR films with my dad, but he passed away in July. Poor dude doesn't get to see the battle of the five armies :(

48 FPS is the way to go. It's so cool! Such a fun experience, and really strange to not see motion blur in the action scenes.

Really, really excited for it. I loved the first two Hobbit movies, so hopefully this one will be a satisfying conclusion.

Edit: I tried watching the 48 FPS 3D of the first movie after getting a PS4 this weekend, but it's pretty disorienting. Everything seems to move in fast motion, which is weird. I don't think I could watch such a long movie in 3D without getting a headache either.

HYPE!!!!!!!!!!!

That title just makes me think of Uncharted 4, hah. But I know that The Hobbit is also using it.

Anyways I'm seeing a theatre marathon of all 3 on the 15, can't wait for this!

JUST BOUGHT THREE TICKETS CUZ OF THIS THREAD

8 MORE DAYS

HYPE!!!!!!!!!

Saw the first Hobbit movie with a buddy of mine back in December 2012. Went with him again in December 2013 for the second movie.

In 2 weeks we finish this.

Same here. My friend actually went into the army this year, and is coming home on leave for a week on the 19th...

I have yet to see this in 48FPS. The first ticket I pre-purchased in IMAX, the second ticket I got a free ticket in IMAX. Maybe I'll go see it in 48FPS this time around. I don't know, I have a 8 story IMAX theater right across the street.

I'm still holding out hope that Viggo will have a tiny cameo at the end of the film , similar to
Cyclops/ Jean Grey In DOFP
, i know the timelines probably don't match up but one can hope.

Can't wait for this! ^_^

I'm confident this movie will wash the mediocre taste of Interstellar and Hunger Games: Floppingbird Part 1 out of my mouth.

Those of you who hated the theatrcial Hobbits, watch the Extended Editions, they are closer in quality to the near-flawless LOTR film trilogy

Seeeing a marathon on the 15th of all three. Wheeeee.

Did the same when RotK came out, so, fitting end. (omg it's been 11 years)

So ready, it's gonna be sad not to look forward to another LOTR movie again. Say what you will but nobody does these epic fantasy movies like Jackson and his crew. Many have tried and they have all failed imo.

Thread title is pretty much how I feel about this, like a job I have to finish and get it outof the way.

Will watch because I can't say no to Peter Jackson despite hating the other two movies for ruining my favorite fantasy story.

I didn't particularly like them much either (although the 2nd was much better than the first) but I'm already in it this far so I might as well finish it.
