Nvidia Launches GTX 980 And GTX 970 "Maxwell" Graphics Cards ($549 & $329)

What games go beyond 4 GB VRAM?
Even on a 4K monitor I have not run into any issues so far, including while playing The Evil Within.
Isn't Shadow of Mordor the only one, and there isn't even that big of a difference between the two?

Not saying you are unwise to wait, but I have never for a moment felt like I was taking a risk of any sort by going with 4 GB.

I wasn't waiting for an 8GB version, I was waiting because I don't have the money until January and that's when the new cards were stated to arrive, so if I was buying I may as well get double the vRAM but according to Overclockers it was just a rumour. I've seen 6GB recommended for several games already, so in 2 - 3 years I'd expect 4GB will start to struggle like 2GB is now, which is why I'm upgrading.

Just noticed my memory clock is listed as 1753 MHz in GPU-Z but the box (for my ASUS Strix 970) says it should be 7010 MHz, should I be concerned?

Also, is there a way to modify the boost clock multiplier (or change the boost clock independently)? I noticed that some of the EVGA cards have a higher boost clock than mine with the same base clock.

I got a reference model 970, such a great looking card and over clocked really really well. I have the core at 1.5ghz and it hasn't gone over 65 yet with a slightly agressive fan curve. No whine.

Got my single 970 FTW to top out at 63 degrees @ 90% GPU usage w/ the "quiet" fan curve preset (slightly altered).

Everything look good?

About 12k for me non stock MSI 970 and stock 4670k.

Over 13000 with my overclock, but I haven't checked it at stock.

That seems to be what I'm getting too.

People who are worried about the firestrike scores. The best way to see is to hit the details tab and see how other people with similar rigs have scored. You can click on each bar and it will show all the results, breakdown of their rig, clock speeds, the lot.

I did not know that, that's helpful, thanks!

The achievements lol... "It's over 9000!"

I'm planning to buy a 970 in January, are there any other cards inc that may be a better buy, or that will make the 970 cheaper?

Hard to tell, AMD's 300 series cards are rumored to come in February. Who knows if NVIDIA will drop prices to compete with AMD, I doubt it.

Good question isn't it? It is an upgrade, no doubt about that. A definitive one? Depending on the game you get between 20-40 more performance. (standart r280x vs standart gtx 970).

seems like I did more of a horizontal upgrade then :/ sigh

So the Asus cards are the best to get? No whine or any other major issues? I've seen people talk about "strix" ones? Any recommendations?
I got one asus with obnoxious coil whine and buzz, RMA'd and the replacement was exactly the same. girlfriend also has one, exact same deal. different systems. i'm inclined to say it's par the course for the card.

that being said, buzz and whine being unavoidable, I would recommend msi. much better overclock potential

Achievements in a benchmark tool? I think I've seen everything now.

Its a social filtering initiative to remove idiots from the PC gaming space.

"I got the achievement but it broke my PC, screw this I'm going back to console gaming"

so, i'm a noob and i'm coming here late, but what's the difference between the two? I should take the expansive one to be good for a few years? i have a 660 right now)

Both should be. I'd get the 970, better bang for buck. 980 is still good and satisfies an ego demand to have the very best in the range, but I couldn't justify the price premium.

A 970 with a nice overclock and you'd be golden.

I'm not getting a signal from the DVI-D port on my G1 970, only the DVI-I... Any ideas? This shit is frustrating.

I don't have anything connected to the other ports.

Edit: nevermind. I pressed the Input Source button on my monitor and it worked. Weird as I'm pretty sure I didn't accidentally press it before.

Mine did something akin to that when I first set it up. I'm not sure how it started working.. but it just did. I use the Displayport to Minidisplayport on a 27" iMac now and it works awesome.

I have a problem with my STRIX 970. It makes some awful rattling noise when it runs a graphic intensive games. The noise comes and go and it's not coming from the fans as I ran a test with them running at different speed and the sound doesn't appear. I think the issue is related to the card being unbalanced because it is so huge. When I push the card back up with my finger the noise stop. Anyway to fix this permanently?

Rattling or the usual buzz?

Uhmmm
I'm with 970 g1 gaming, ssd and 4790k and closed on 10500...
Should i be concerned?

We were talking about graphics score, not total score. See the image above, graphics score 11k, total 9k. But if you are indeed talking about your graphics score and it's only 10500 then yes, I guess you should be concerned.

I was so close T_T.

Running regular Firestrike. Kinda disappointed considering some of the numbers you guys are getting but I'll take it.

Your CPU is at stock I assume? OC her, it should improve.
Do all 970s have coil whine?

Yes.

Do all 970s have coil whine?

Mostly all videocards have some sort of coil whine, but the 970 series ranges from bearable to obnoxious. I'm on my fourth GTX970 (1x ASUS Strix / 3x Gigabyte G1) and the ASUS was the worst. Right now, I'm on my third G1 (Rev 1.1). The coil whine is acceptable and overclocks pretty well (+150 core / +360 memory / stock voltage).

Luck of the draw I guess.

My ASUS mobo came with a built in profile for OCing. I went kinda conservative and left it at 4.2GHZ to be safe since CPU OCing is new territory for me.

What other options does it have? Any higher than that?
OC is pretty easy, given that you have a decent CPU cooler.
There are tons and tons of tuts on the internet, and there is always a first time for everything. Believe me, this is not one of the hard thing to do as a first time. Just take a long time to find the most stable settings to go with.

Ah come on don't be dissapointed. Your score is pretty normal. Just guessing from the numbers in your screenshot I'd say you are running you CPU maybe @ 4,2ghz/4,3ghz and you are useing a 'normal' gtx 970 closer to nvidia reference clocks (something like the normal zotac, galax etc.) and not some 'crazy' OCed stuff.

As I am running an i5 3570k myself (@4,1hz), and I have nothing to do atm I did some testing for you. Please keep in mind I am a hardware noob and know nothing ;)

Clocking my gtx 970 to Nvidia's ~1180 mhz reference boost clock I get:
gtx970standartclock1136fr8.jpg

Clocking it to the standart Zotac GTX 970 ~ 1214mhz level I get:
zotacgtx9701216mhz02cfb.jpg

Resetting it to my manufacturers standart clock ~ 1350mhz I get:
manufactoreroc1350mhztbia6.jpg

On my current OC (1450mhz) I get:
3dmarkoc1450mhzg8u12.jpg

Shit, was close to buying one,any nice alternatives to the 970?

So the 970 is still sold out?

Damn, this is crazy. I want to get one before GTA V is out.

Anyone see the supply stabilizing soon or is this in for a long one?

thx you for these comparisons, helps a lot

Pancakes, if you're running stock 970 that's pretty normal number

Shit, was close to buying one,any nice alternatives to the 970?

Even with the issues I've had, I still fully recommend the GTX 970. An alternative would be the Radeon R9 290X. I had a Gigabyte R9 290X and it ran really good. We'll probably see something new from AMD in the next 2-3 months, so it's hard to recommend a 290.

Check www.nowinstock.net and sign up for the alerts. I get alerts from this site hours before Newegg Notifications. I've noticed most online stores get stock at the beginning of the week.

I had my case laying horizontally yesterday while I was trying to figure out why I wasn't getting a signal from DVI-D, and my G1 970 started doing a rattling noise that got my very worried. I checked the fans to see if anything was touching them and inspected the rest of the card but didn't see anything unusual. Then as soon as I propped the case back up (while it was still on, perhaps not a smart thing to do) the rattling stopped and didn't come back. I hope I don't hear it again.

It's weird that the 970 series is so hard to keep in stock in the USA. On mainland Europe, it looks like I can walk into any PC store and pick up this card, regardless of pre-ordering.

For gddr5 memory multiply the base clock by 4.

Sorry for being a bit out of the loop guys, but are there any GTX 980 cards with more than 4GB RAM out or coming out?

We miss you over at gaming side Dennis.

There hasn't been anything announced yet,. just pure speculation really. AMD did launch some 8 gg 290x's... but that doesn't cont of course.

I am without a gaming PC since moving to the US but I will be getting one eventually and wanted to get a handle on the new available hotness.

Kind of...

The 'fan favorites' like the MSI G4, Asus stryx and G1 are still rare or very overpriced. The cheapest Msi 970 oc gaming 4g on amazon.de is at 490€ (retailer, no Amazon stock available) atm.

The rest seems to be available in most stores.

I think they will come eventually but not before the 960 lunch in february. Nvidia, suppliers and Co. already seem to have problems to keep up the production of 4gb models atm.

490 EUR? Holy crap.

I paid 320 EUR for my MSI 970 G4. Looks like the store has raised the price since then though.

What card do you have and what are you exchanging it for? I'm curious to whether going from gtx 970 ssc to gtx 970 ftw qualifies.

Have: EVGA GeForce GTX 970 Superclocked ACX
Exchanging for: EVGA GeForce GTX 970 FTW ACX 2.0
