Okay, got this on Sunday so me and girlfriend could get some matches going.

We're both totally new to the series and finding the controls and pace of the game pretty tough to be honest. Pretty much had to re-bind the buttons and disable the jump by hitting "Up" option.

If anyone could give me a quick rundown of how to save your character when falling off ledges..it's infuriating being at 20% and not being able to recover from a small knock. I notice that some characters have abilities to "zip" around when airbound but some characters like king dedede will actually buttslam himself to oblivion...

You can use the control stick to manipulate the direction your character moves toward when using most recovery moves. Dedede doesn't have to buttslam straight up and down, for instance. Also don't forget that all characters have at least two jumps and a recovery move. Some have even more though. Dedede has five, if I recall.

Anyway, here's the list of characters I'm REALLY FEELING

BOWSER - I was so excited when Bowser was announced for melee. He was the first character I played when I got the game. However, after seeing that he was slow as hell, couldn't get an attack in and ran like an aggressive roomba vacuum, I tended to use him very rarely. This carried over to Brawl. Now, I feel like Bowser plays the way I'd always wanted him to. He is surprisingly quick, his fsmash is absurdly powerful, aesthetically he looks better than ever, and using his side-b to suicide with someone is still immensely satisfying. Couldn't be happier with his implementation now.

Captain Falcon - he doesn't seem to have gone back to his melee peak, but he is definitely better than his very average Brawl incarnation. His slight design adjustments are really nice, too. He was my main in 64 and melee, so I'm glad he's a relevant character again. Landing the knee of justice is as satisfying as ever. I also like that the raptor punch seems to have been buffed a bit.

Sonic- so fast and actually has fairly decent killing moves now. His bair and fsmash are all great as is his uair. I love the way you can dance around opponents with him as they more or less just struggle to defend against an onslaught of hard-to-predict attacks. He's not my most effective character, but he might be the most satisfying to play.

Charizard- Flare Blitz. Being untethered from Pokemon Trainer gives such a popular Pokemon the attention I think he deserves, and he feels much better than he ever did in Brawl.

Little Mac- I wanted him so badly in Brawl and I'm glad he finally made it. And honestly, his implementation is better than I ever could have imagined. I think some people underestimate the ability to use his recovery in the air as a kill move. It has pretty decent knock back. The OHKO is also a great aspect of his character and so fitting. I played a 2v2 for glory match earlier and got seven KOs in two minutes. Against the right characters, you're basically watching Little Mac pummel rag dolls across the stage. Landing his hits also feels more satisfying than maybe any other character.

I won't do a write-up on all the others, but I also use Ganondorf, Pac-Man, Pikachu, Greninja, Zero Suit Samus, Sheik and Duck Hunt fairly often.

NOT FEELING-

Captain Olimar, Wii Fit Trainer, Dedede (although he's been buffed substantially), and Diddy Kong.

All the others are fine and enjoyable to use on occasion, but don't get much usage between the 12-ish characters I tend to favor.

Knocked out the "50000 blocks in Trophy Rush" challenge. Only took 1000 years.

That's definitely a hammer candidate if you've got some to spare. I had already done all of the other Trophy Rush related challenges and stopped receiving new trophies from it entirely well before I was halfway done with that one.

The lag in online is terrible.... A fighting game with input lag is no fun.
I played online with strangers yesterday in 4p matches, for 30mn with no lag. I'm now officially in love with Smash. The Villager is pleasing me a lot, but I'm not sure it's the easiest one to compete for a newbie, I'll try megaman tonight.

This game is a blast.
My first SSB and I feel so bad. I know hardly anything about the possibilities. Sometimes i get killed with only like 50%, sometimes I get kinda countered and insta smashed mid air hell I don't even know how grabs work the correct way.

I need a EU (or German) senpai to teach me the secrets of this game.

I'm having most fun playing ZSS but I'm open for any char you can recommend for a newcomer :D

Yo that master sword triforce map looks mad awesome

So true...

So who else is thinking about GOTY here? I mean its full of content, looks great, plays smooth, easy to pick up though hard to master, it has customization which isnt forced onto you, singleplayer is good, multiplayer is even better and the online component is just awesome and works almost perfectly... even Smash tour is kinda fun :-D

IF you ask me it even beats Mario Kart 8 for this year and MK8 is a damn good game :D

Olimar is a sneaky piece of shit, no matter how hard I try, he kicks my ass in For Glory and it's driving me mad. He has amazing grabs, smashes and specials and a good Olimar fucks around until he plucks two purples and it's game over. You're done. It's like dealing with 3 Luma's, I would not be surprised to see him at tournament play soon.

Online has been insanely smooth for me so far, talking Killer Instinct level of good

And my Shulk is finally starting to wreck shit :D

Fix your connection.

Great advice /s

I have the same problem as him. Mostly it's the match making. I don't understand how you can lump me, a guy from Germany, one from the UK and one from Mexico together. The guy from Mexico was obviously hosting because he was kicking our asses while we were trying to hit something.

Sometimes I have good matches with people from NA, sometimes everything lags with people from Europe. Yesterday I played over 10 games with 3 folks from Germany and everything was smooth. So obviously, the problem is not on my end. Yet, when somebody lags, he kills the entire game. Worst case scenario, he even hosts the damn session.

D1 and Zero were on UltrachenTV doing a smash primer! :D

seeing as there's been a few people in the thread wanting to know how to play smash, this might be handy (not watched it yet myself) :3

I finished watching it. It was pretty good though it felt a bit scattered at times lol. They go over the very basic mechanics to some slightly advanced stuff along with differences compared to past smash games. Afterwards they try to go through all the characters and talk about various aspects of them along with some tricks to them. They do miss some things because of time though unfortunately. They went all the way up to Robin and are going to do the rest next week.

Just got my first win ever online, immediately followed by the second one in the next match. Yeh, I think I found my main in Zero Suit Samus. :)

Has anyone did the all-star hard mode with the duck hunt duo ? Any tips ?

It's probably my 15th attempt, i'm gonna cry
Abuse projectile attacks from a distance to rack up damage whenever you can manage to keep all the enemies on one side of you. I can't remember which moves are good for fishing for KOs with that character but you seem to get a bit of a knock-back boost in All-Star and can KO at lower percentages than usual. (IIRC, 50% or so is about how high the opponents should be before you start deliberately trying to off them.) While the AI can be annoyingly on-point with guarding/dodging on Hard, they seem to be somewhat susceptible to a dash-in followed by a quick up-smash on the C-stick when using some characters; I can't remember if that was any good with Duck Hunt.

No matter what character you're using, make an effort to get through the first 3 stages without using any healing items, then use 1 of them between each of the remaining stages:

< 100% - tomato
100% to 200% - bottle
> 200% - heart

If you've used the tomato but not the bottle and are at the end of a match with just a little under 100% damage, try to let the AI push you over 100% so that you can actually use the bottle.

There's definitely some luck of the draw on stages. The Gamer stage can be frustrating as hell.

Make it a priority to take care of opponents who abuse projectiles from a distance. Pikachu can be especially insufferable if he locks you down while Ganon or Charizard wail on you with stronger attacks. I've noticed that Samus and Lucario have a tendency to waste their charged specials, though; they'll often jump and shoot for no reason and let you safely stay grounded.

Yeah, was somewhat interesting though. I'd completely forgotten about jump-cancel from shield and had no idea that bowser's down-tilt could break shields (I've literally never seen a Bowser use the move before XD )

I knoww, whenever I get a trophy that doesn't correspond to a box I just feel annoyed lolol.

Trophy boxes = best new smash feature confirmed.

as someone who collects animu & vydja figures, now I know how I want to display them P:

I demand a Palutena's figure or figma Nintendo! or at least an Amiibo :c

Is it just me or is Conquest not updating, even after the results have been tallied? On 3DS they'd update instantly with new ones.
Yeah, that was confuzzling me too. It's like they've forgotten about it on the wii-u or something :P

I gotta say, I'm disappointed at all these people listing the characters they like/don't using "really not feeling it" or similar for the dislike section rather than "What a buncha jokers" :3

I'm sad to see so few people are feeling Wario. He's been my main since Brawl but I hardly see anyone else use him. I've yet to see someone else pick him in for fun or for glory. He's such a fun, unique character, why doesn't he get the love he deserves?

I think my favorites are at this point:

Lucario
Lucina
Greninja
ZSS

In that order as well. Lucario is definitely my main I think. Really enjoy playing him. Like the aura mechanic and I am also a sucker for characters with counter moves and good mobility like his Up B. Lucina kinda just replaced Marth because she seems easier to handle. Greninja feels similar to Lucario but I don#t like his projectile as much and he lacks the Aura. ZSS ist just a very solid character.

I absolutely hate:

Villager
Ness

Villager seems to have no reach at all and I could never warm up to the mechanics Ness uses.

I'M REALLY FEELING:
Ness

I'M NOT REALLY FEELING:
Everyone else

Hope to change this soon. Really need secondaries.

How do you play Ness? Strong focus on the grab game? Diddy plays similarly in that respect. If you use Ness to guard the ledges, Pikachu can feel quite natural.

Thanks for the advice, i'll try again now

But I find it impossible to make it in the 4th part without healing, the part with Charizard is the hardest IMO

Charizard is annoyingly more aggressive than the others for some reason.

I'm trying to think how one can achieve that shot in game. It appears to take place during Zero Suit's Final Smash, but what about the moon? Is that from the Luigi's Mansion stage?

A lot of pictures in here are impossible in-game. Like the angles of some of those shots.
