20 years of PlayStation on the EU Blog

Yeah. A common insult towards popular culture nowadays is "thats so 90's" "so edgy"

Fuck me. I fucking loved how edgy things were in the 90's. I loved the rawness, the "I really don't give a fuck" attitude to everything.

Ill never be part of the "like comment and subscribe" crowd.

Things were alot better when people not only didnt care if they offended but many times actively worked at trying to piss people off.

Now, that there's an outlet for direct complaints in the form of FB, Twitter and what not, people bicker about the most trivial things. It's no wonder almost everything is watered down, when the executives try to tapdance between the customers' grievances. In the end, they're bound to fail as there are always those who get offended by something they do. Media doesn't really help, as they're eager to create headlines of such subjects, and blow them out of proportion. That's one of the reasons why I don't think a game like Silent Hill 2 would be doable today.

Tomb Raider in 1996.

Butler locked in or not?

Its nearly 2015 and they still play the nostalgia card. Hurry up sony and provide more games.

I will fucking die if FFVII remake ends to be true.

People still do this. Now I feel a little less old.

It's the 20th anniversary of the Playstation brand... I don't know what you were expecting when you clicked on this thread.

That is the best video game related advert ever. I think it only aired here in the UK.

But man, as a 13 year old, I got that trailer. It reinforced what was pure gaming heaven at that time. The apex of gaming glory where all dreams had become a reality.

Resident Evil 2, Metal Gear Solid, FF7, Silent Hill, Ape Escape, Spyro the Dragon, Syphon Filter, etc, etc.

It was during the time which I was just utterly enamoured with gaming and thought that no matter where I am in life in years to come, so long as I can game I will be happy.

Then Microsoft happened. Then DLC, microtransactions, buggy game releases, online multiplayer ubiquity, and casualisation happened.

And thus gaming is a shadow of its former self to me and it will never recapture the magic I felt, that this trailer epitomises.

The greatest. No reason to be modest when it comes to the PS2.

Yup. Greatest console that has ever been and will be.

Yeah, fuck Microsoft for laying down the golden standard for online multiplayer and social gaming experiences. Fuck 'em for putting "arrogant" Sony back in their place with the 360. Fuck 'em for effectively creating the PS3, PS4 and PSN as they exist today. Gaming would have been much better off without them, because it didn't really need their competition.

What about a new/limited PS4 that looks like the PS1 in celebration for it's 20th birthday?
That would be rad, 20 years man...time goes by fast.

Yeah. Pretty much happy with the abundance of split screen and couch social gaming that microsoft brought to the table.

Oh....

I have no problem with saying Microsoft's entry brought new ways to game, but I think its incredibly myopic to not notice alot of the downsides of their ascension as well.

Id also argue that online gaming is still very much the preserve of the core market. It still leaves casual gamers out in the cold. I believe thats one reason the Wii got as popular as it did.

Who said anything about split screen? Besides, it's not like anyone besides Nintendo has really done much in this space since the N64. Still, Xbox also launched with 4 controller ports, and I remember many frantic nights playing 4-way split-screen Halo and Project Gotham with mates. That's something, I guess. The first two PlayStation consoles, for all the praise they get, were pretty poor on this front compared to the competition. Microsoft actually jumped in ahead of the industry juggernaut.

As someone who is relatively indifferent to the Xbox platform, I see Microsoft's entry into the market as a substantial net positive for the development and growth of the industry. I don't think the industry was in a particularly sane place at the end of generation six, as partly evident by the PS3's pretty disastrous launch. The 360 played an important role here.

I agree.

Hmm I loved the PS2 a lot in its day because it had hundreds of worthwhile games but these days I don't find myself turning the system on too often compared to other retro consoles (including the PS1). Maybe that says more about me than the library itself but something isn't drawing me back in.

All I know is, I enjoyed gaming far more during the 5th and 6th generations, than anything you mentioned MS brought to the table.

And I don't give a shit for online. I can't stand it, will never understand it, and will long hope for single player adventures over it.

Multi tap. It was an optitonal accessory because barely any games were made for more than 2 players, even then. The Xbox was not even close to the first person to do this. Many had already tried and failed on that front.

The PS3s bad launch had nothing to do with Microsoft. It was actually Sony throwing everything and the kitchen sink into a console. Thats just what Sony did at the time. The PS3s problem was it was an electronics devices first, media machine second and games console third. PS4 was directly effected by the 360, and to a smaller extent so was PSN.

Microsoft entering the market changed it, but without knowing how the market would of developed without them, im hesitant to say it was a benefit for all. It certainly helped western development rise to the forefront however.
