Starbound Beta Thread - Begins December 4th!

Incomplete list of changes for the next stable build; http://pastebin.com/jnZfRNL4

Spoiler Alert: It's big.

Sounds great. I wonder if they have any idea of some kind of date though? The game's not been updated in forever, I really expected more frequent updates than this. Hopefully this patch comes out this year yet.....

Nightly Builds update... well, nightly, but they're unstable as hell.

In retrospect, they should have made the nightly builds their entire phase 1 and 2 for beta. People would have bitched that they were unstable, but Chucklefish was also very clear that the first phases of beta were going to be rough.

People wanted it stable too quickly and then hit the ceiling and demanded stable and regular updates. Completely unreasonable, but the devs' messaging was off too (not surprising considering they're an indie dev). Nobody is blameless, but the nightly updates are fantastic for those who haven't been in them. They've been busy as hell.

Sorry for the double post, but just in case anyone was wondering;

Hi guys

So it’s no secret that a bunch of early access projects have run into trouble lately. From running out of money to ceasing development for political reasons. It’s not the best time to be a part of the early access party and it’s easy to see why people are worried about the health of the Starbound project.

I wanted in no uncertain terms to assure everyone that there’s no chance of Starbound going that way. Not only is the development of Starbound extremely healthy. (More so than it’s ever been in fact, with more team members than ever and all of us in the same location). But Chucklefish could fund the development of Starbound for another 9 years at least. Even if we didn’t make another penny in that time. This includes all our office costs, salaries and every other kind of company expenditure. Not only that but every member of the team is super dedicated to getting Starbound to where THEY want it to be. Which is 1.0 and beyond.

So why don’t we hire a bunch more programmers and finish Starbound faster?

I’m afraid it just doesn’t work that way, bringing on a new programmer requires a huge amount of invested time. Programmers need to learn the code base, they need existing programmers to teach them the code base. It takes months of getting up to speed to reap the rewards of that investment. Then you have a huge communication overhead as well as all the businessy time sinks that go along with a new hire. Not to mention finding room to house those additional hires (We would have to move to a bigger office!).

So I hope this is reassuring to the worried out there. Starbound is coming and you can check our progress on the Starbound blog and by opting into our nightly builds.

I'm a software engineer and I certainly agree about the "more programmers" thing. It's kind of like hiring 9 women to have a baby in 1 month.

If I want to dink around..do I play unstable or nightly?

Nightly, since that's the most up to date one.

Again, needs to be reiterated: It can be buggy as hell. Also, if you want to get up to speed you'll probably want to mess with the admin commands (which allow you to give yourself any item), that way you can test out most of what the game has.

Also opengl or other..what should be used?

Doesn't really matter I think? Whatever works best for your computer (aka, whatever doesnt crash the game). Be aware that since the nightlies do change a lot every update, sometimes you might find yourself using OpenGL, other times not.

I guess the deep ocean biome I found is a fairly new addition? Just started playing again since last December. There's very little documentaion on these.

Right now I'm trying to amuse myself by drilling a huge hole from the ocean floor down to the core to see what happens. Kind of annoying that it auto-plugs the gap after a while in certain tight spots with sand.

Hey again! It's been a while since I posted here but I noticed the thread while browsing and thought I'd pop in. As most of you know, the Starbound team has a massive, ridiculously huge update coming down the line soon, but we know things have been quiet for those of you that aren't testing the nightlies. So just wanted to say thanks for all of your support, patience and for sticking around! If you guys have questions about anything specific, I'll be happy to answer them.

Thank you for the update! I'm looking forward to trying it out!

Actually, I was wondering if you guys are still following the "3 phases plan" that was laid out when the game was put up for pre-order? And if you're actually still more or less following that plan, is the game still in "Phase 1" or some other phase? Based on the daily updates you guys post, that it seems like the game is sort of in an amalgamation of all three phases.

In any case, a one week heads up from you guys about the update would be great, that way I can start up the server again. :P

Thanks for popping in. I've been following the development and it all sounds incredible, but yeah the lack of any updates to the game (other than the nightlies) has been disheartening.

I only have one question: do you have any timeframe for the big patch? Is it a few weeks away? Will it be out in 2014 or is it pushed back to sometime in 2015?

I'm dying to play more Starbound but I'm waiting primarily for the new progression system, because it sounds great. Getting anxious to start playing again as the game is phenomenal!

when is chucklefish picking up space station 13? ;)

This is pretty much everything you need to know about the development progress up to and including hitting version 1.0.

The phases have become an amalgamation of sorts, changed as we received feedback from the community. The extremely frequent updates at the beginning of the early access period were breaking mods and constantly erasing people's progress, so the thick and fast updates of phase 1 were actually detrimental to a number of people's enjoyment of the game.

I believe the plan after the next update is to start doing more regular stable updates, so we don't expect there to be any huge gaps between stable releases like there has been as of late.

It will be soon, but I don't think anyone on the Starbound team wants to give a solid time-frame just yet.

I'd love to work on a full SS13 commercial title with a dedicated team at Chucklefish. I'm convinced that we could make it work if we had the funds and the time to do it. My concerns are as follows:

a) It is a game that was not so much designed, but accidentally formed, shaped and gradually added over the period of a decade by possibly hundreds of individual people with too much time on their hands.

b) This sort of thing would make a commercial title difficult, as you would need expensive lawyers to navigate the legal minefield that is a game that was not so much designed, but accidentally formed, shaped and gradually added over the period of a decade by possibly hundreds of individual people with too much time on their hands.

c) a commercial title would likely require a serious overhaul of features, how they'd connect to each other, and which ones were worth keeping, which might affect the charm of a game that was not so much designed, but accidentally formed, shaped and gradually added over the period of a decade by possibly hundreds of individual people with too much time on their hands.

So you can see the problem here. I'd still be excited about it though.

Soon, eh? Well, hopefully it's not Blizzard's style of "soon", lol. Either way I'm looking very forward to it.

In the meantime I've taken to playing Terraria some more. Finally got into hard mode after over 100 hours of play time (I've done a LOT of exploring and building). I'm trying to finish up my time with Terraria now because when Starbound gets updated I doubt I'll be going back to Terraria much afterwards.

Hopefully! There's still a lot of content that we want to put into the update, and we really believe it's going to be worth the wait for those not checking the nightly builds.

There's stuff coming up that the community has been begging us to implement for ages. For instance:

Picked this up on the weekend.

Been having a ball with it so far. As someone who put ~400 hours into Terraria, this just feels like it's going to be even more of a crazy time waster. Sooooo much stuuffffff!

I've advanced to Titanium stuff and pretty much just working my way through the tech tree, learning the progression.

Tried to start a server with a mate on the weekend, but didn't have any luck. Port forwarded, but it must be something else on my end that's stopping access. Will play more with that this evening/tomorrow.

So far, so good - no big bugs or glaring errors; Just an item lacking a description, and a strange bug where putting something in my inventory on another item made it "locked", but reloading the game fixed that.

Think I put like 11 hours in already haha..

Looking forward to the next big patch, but there's a lot of content I've already got to catch up on.

Was just thinking about this today! Looking forward to rebuilding my mushroom kingdom. Thought I'd wait a while before coming back and realised it's been nearly a year.

The game is about to change in some really positive ways, one of them is that the progression is getting a total revamp, so keep that in mind as you play.

The date it's getting updated is "soon". Whenever that ends up being....

Yep. Nightly unstable updates, one of the devs mentioned putting a video together to show off all the new stuff. Quite a lot of changes.

Next stable build is sometime in the future, supposedly soon, but we'll see.

Cool thanks for update. Bought this a year ago kinda crazy how slow the progress has been. I guess I'll jus wait for "release" which will be God knows when

Going by the timeline so far, "soon" could be months away, so I'm not really worried too much about benching it or whatever.

Finding it pretty straight-forward anyway.

Ventured into Sector X last night. Getting my arse handed to me of course, but it's been good fun mining the odd piece of new mineral before dying.

Almost at the point where I'm able to switch my ship over to Uranium fuel. I'll be glad to see the back of Coal haha..

EDIT: Quick question - are there any good guns in the game? I've had a bunch drop now from enemies, as well as picking up a few special ones from chests, but they're all crazy low damage compared to my basic swords and other melee weapons.

I never got as far as you, but if I recall correctly there were some decent pistols/rifles, BUT the melee weapons probably end up being more powerful in general. Especially if the weapon runs out of energy quickly.

One thing you might want to try is finding one of the worlds with the bird skyship. If you're strong enough to uh..."convince" the crew of bird people to give you everything they have, you might find some guns. Then again they might still be useless at your level.

A wiki or someone who played higher sectors than me would probably be more helpful, sorry.

That's how it seems. Especially in comparison to the sword I'm using now. I switch over to the machine gun and it's like flinging crumpled up balls of paper at the enemies.

Bird skyship? I'll have to look that one up, I've not seen that.

Yeah, I should jump on the Wiki I guess, cheers.

Finally found one of those Avian Airships last night on an Arid threat level 4 world.

Wiped them all out but got nothing of value, just a one-handed sword with lower stats than mine.

Have to stick to Sector X and just hope I get lucky with another one so the drops are higher level.

I'm still loving this game, it's great, but I really am hoping they add some cool guns/weapon crafting and stuff later on. There's so much potential. Terraria had that cool ammo crafting thing - I can imagine Uranium slugs, Durasteel bullets etc, and then of course being a space-faring game you have potential for all of the plasma/dark matter/black hole generating etc type weapons.

Getting a little bored with only being able to effectively use melee on higher threat-level worlds.

Sorry to hear it. I think the Avian Airships also have gun merchants, so hopefully you talked to them before wiping them out.

Either way, for a level 4 world they might not have had very GOOD gun merchants. :P

I couldn't find one, but I didn't realise that there were more of them riiiiiight up the top at the helm of the ship until I'd already started attacking haha, so I probably stuffed it up.

As you say, level 4 world, so probably not much help anyway.

What's Refined Rubium for? Made some gems last night but it didn't unlock any new recipes/crafting blueprints?

Hey! So it's been a while since I've played in the server. I went to join it again but can't seem to get the server account info.

I tried using what's in the quoted OP but its not working. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

:/

I think the server's been offline for quite awhile now. Everyone is done playing until the patch, so there wasn't much reason to keep it online.

Since I wanted to go to Nightlies (and most people didnt), and the fact that Nightlies pretty much guaranteed wipes left and right, I took down the server.

When the next stable update comes out, server will go back up.

I have a mech!

Found the Human Mech blueprint last night in a tech chest almost right on the surface of a phase 10 world.

Thought it must have been something I had to craft (like the Robot), so I was looking for it in my crafting station for ages before I realised it was a simple Tech choice addition. Pretty cool fun for a few minutes but not much use on the later worlds haha..

Taken up residence on this world; It's a huge jungle world with, so far, a Flesh and Slime biome underneath my base in my mining shaft, so that's been pretty cool. Found this huge sewer station thing complete with toxic waste barrels in the Slime biome with a chest containing some cool new weapons.

Managed to get my server working on the weekend so had my mate join for a few hours.

Been mining Solarium for fuel and Rubium so I can advance to the next gear level.

So one year ago yesterday Starbound went into early access, and the devs posted a short blurb about it:

http://playstarbound.com/one-year-later/

Doesn't sound like there will be a stable update to the game anytime soon, but we might see a video next week:

we’ll be posting a trailer next week highlighting all the biggest features we’ve added to the game.

I really hope I get to play the finished Starbound in my lifetime, LOL. Terraria 2 will release before Starbound even updates at this rate. Here is a cool pic just because I like it, glow in the dark plants:

Didn't know there was a Starbound thread. I completely forgot I tried the alpha/beta/whatever out a year ago. Currently I haven't touched it since last year and am perfectly fine for waiting for the full release. The full-fledged quest system is what I'm most looking forward too.

If you can tolerate the potential character / universe restarts and such, the nightly unstable builds will make a true believer out of anyone. There's so much stuff that it's actually a little daunting to sort it all out a year after. It's not like Terraria where it comes out and "Oh, lol, there's fishing and a new tier of swords and an NPC that sells a bubble machine" and it's all very easy to sort through. I'm talking gobs of content piled on top of each other. Maybe it's the lack of documentation, but it feels like you sink neck-deep into Starbound content and it's easy to get lost in space (lulz).
