Starbound Beta Thread - Begins December 4th!

Why would you even assume that's 1.0 if THEY don't say it's 1.0.

You're only setting yourself up for disappointment, as big as this update looks.

January is enough for me, too much to play right now :p

because the time frame fits perfectly with their estimate from 3 months ago?
which is why I posted the article
We’re going to be releasing a stable update once the tech tree can be progressed through from start to finish, after that we’re going to be focusing on finishing up this todo list for 1.0. Which we are aiming for this year, but could go into next. It takes as long as it takes to get it all done, but we’re working as fast as we can.

Post 1.0 we have a whole bunch of content and updates planned, but I’ll go into those at a later date.
though they often miss their dates by a large margin so it's not surprising if this isn't a 1.0 update... not that it matters to me... 1.0 is just a number... it doesn't matter to me at all what number this is (thus no way to set myself up for disappointment) I have merely been waiting for the new combat system + quests (both confirmed in the trailer) when the rest of the content comes it will be nice, but those are what I have been waiting for to pick up the game again.

It's not 1.0, there's still a ways to go for that. This is just a big step in that direction. After reworking a lot of systems and getting the groundwork set for the real progression etc instead of the placeholder stuff that was there previously, they're nearing a point where they can actually push it to Stable.

thanks for the update. I haven't been following this as closely recently since I have just been waiting for certain content to be added to the stable before I cared again :P

I am still waiting for the console release. I am not much of a PC gamer. (I know the controls and such will suck on consoles but I enjoyed Terraria on console)

I must say that the programmable GUI stuff is pretty cool, how long before someone ports Doom to Starbound? :lol
Reminds me a bit of that canned Mojang space game

I demand that we have a NeoGAF Arcade with working Pac-Man, Asteroids and Breakout machines.

From the look of the trailer, not too terribly long. That sort of stuff is fun, but I'm looking forward to stuff like the turret controls and such. Seems like setting up a base defense with it's own custom UI to turn all of the stuff on would be prettttty damn cool.

Also, as far as the Programmable GUI goes, It's been a couple of days, but the arcade machine in the Outpost had a game of "Lights Out" on it. Haven't come across any other machines, but it was a nice surprise.

Reading this thread is the first time I've thought about this game in months. Still not out huh?
Not out and no mention of when it might possibly be out.

The changes happening look absolutely amazing and I'm sure it'll be something worth the wait, but its frustrating just not knowing when the hell we can expect it.

1.0 is not just a number. It marks the point where the team have built a mostly feature-complete and stable release for public consumption with no worries about having our saves wiped or anything like that when future updates are introduced.

I don't want to play until we have that.

I've been interested for a long time, but whenever I think about buying the early access version I keep seeing negative reviews on steam and it immediately puts me off. Is it worth it to get it now or would you recommend just waiting for the full version?

Is anyone willing to give a quick summary of what's in the current version?

I would wait.
Edit: I already own the game and haven't touched it for about a year i think. There were updates that wiped your entire progress. I would wait at least until a stable version with all the quests and proper progression is released.

Which supposedly the next stable update is January 2015. That is, if all the things they're pushing to the nightlies from the trailer doesn't break the game horribly, then they push out the stable update.

I'm excited for this game again.

Trailer was pretty awesome.

If I play unstable next week, will I be able to transfer my save to the stable next year?

Amazing trailer. I look forward to seeing how/if they will implement the first person dungeons. The combination reminds me of Whales Voyage and Albion.

Whoa, hold up a sec. That wasn't a first-person dungeon. That was the Scriptable GUI window that someone wrote a script to PLAY a first-person game-within-a-game INSIDE Starbound for. See the blog post I linked to earlier, they show a copy of "Pong" in there too. In theory, someone could write a script to have entirely different types of games running in that window (Reddit was talking about getting a version of Minecraft to play in there, Doom certainly seems possible, and I'm wondering if something like an NES emulator could be done).

I've been interested for a long time, but whenever I think about buying the early access version I keep seeing negative reviews on steam and it immediately puts me off.

A lot if those negative reviews were made as a form of protest to perceived slights by people who don't understand what "Early Access" means. The response to the game itself has been mostly positive.

Oh come on. Most buyers knew what early access meant, but their website was terribly misleading on the state of the game.
It was advertised as beta which was nearing feature completion (remember that shiny graphs they had on their site on the progress of everything?), when in fact it was a barely working alpha which did not receive any consistent updates in the first 5 months.

Are we rewriting history now ?
The first three months at least did see regular updates, and then they realized it wasn't going to work for them.

I can understand being annoyed because it takes so much time, but can we at least stop making shit up ?

To be fair, they decided to change some pretty big directions with progression and planet generation right after early access, big changes that they weren't planning on originally. That is what this big upcoming patch is all about: getting the game's core systems installed and working. After this patch they will simply be fleshing the features out, but the core will finally be complete and revised. The initial advertising was not taking huge core rewrites into account.

Now, one can argue that they went into early access too soon and without a finished direction, but it's a moot argument now. The end result is that the game is much, MUCH better after the year's worth of work and it was time very well spent.

Last December when I was still mostly bed ridden, my roommate and I grabbed this. Don't regret the purchase one bit, we put about 15 hours in then decided to put it up until it was closer to release.

We bought it mainly as dev support, and plan on jumping back in once the new update hits stable.

The comments on the new trailer are pretty vicious.

I played this with some friends just after launch and had a blast. Haven't played in a very long time. Should I start now, or wait for 1.0?

Hmm, guess I'll have to look at couple of videos and decide then.

Also consider that the price now will most likely be cheaper than when it goes 1.0. If you are sure about your purchase, buy it and let it sit if the current state doesn't excite you.

But I'm excited. That trailer looks awesome. I need to find the soundtrack to this game.

Before early access, the general tone was "We're working as fast as we can, but people have day jobs, please be patient" while the community basically said "Take my money now, omg!"

Once they opened the funding page (April '13), the community completely changed their tune and assumed a "Hey, we paid for this game, where the hell is it!?" stance and they pushed out the game in very rough shape (December 4, 2013) and frequently updated it (Dec. 5, 9, 10, 11, 15, 22) which resulted in a lot of character/universe wipes.

People didn't like the frequent wipes and demanded a more stable build, so instead of small updates they started working on a big, stable update, which went live in January '14 and was updated to the current stable "Enraged Koala" build (February '14). At that time they also added an unstable branch that would be updated more regularly but was still subject to wipes.

Once that was out, people demanded more frequent updates again and they set up the ability to opt-in to the highly unstable nightly build (June '14) and made it a point to frequently update their site with posts about what they were working on. That brings us up to now.

In the interim, they've used that money to make Starbound their full-time job, bring on new people, set up office space to speed production and received nothing but rage, grief, death threats, rape threats and who knows what else.

Hmm, guess I'll have to look at couple of videos and decide then.

Honestly, the Winter Update one and the original Beta Trailer are all you need.

I need to find the soundtrack to this game.

You should have gotten it free if you pre-ordered. Pretty sure you can still do that and get it.

What's the state of the game compared to Terraria? When I played Terraria we basically just fooled around, explored and did a couple of the bosses. Can I do the same in Starbound? The impressions I read is that there's almost nothing to do but I think I'd already be content if I can explore and build stuff.

Yeah, you can do all of that. I found it hard to go back to Terraria because the building tools / blocks and variety of biomes are vastly superior in Starbound. There's also quests, lots of dungeons, etc.

You would enjoy it a lot now, I think, but the winter update will take that to a new level. The nightly unstable builds have been a blast and there's so much that folks who didn't opt in are going to love. I'm also not 100% sure there won't be a character / universe wipe for the update so waiting to dig into it a lot might be a good idea.

Oh boy, this is one hella cool game I paid for, shame it's just taking chukkelfesh so long to make it. Heck, I have to admit, I'm actually quite impatient about it.

Wait, now I've got it! I'll send Tiy and the fellas a post where I threaten to mutilate and murder them, their families, their friends and pets and rape their fucking corpses

Haha, that'll surely show how gosh DARN hard the wait is for us mature video game enthusiasts, I'm sure they'll work doubly hard from now on!

Spent $45 on this during it's fundraising and put in 55 hours in the first month of it's alpha release. Then stopped playing to wait for the next stable release.

I consider myself having my money's worth.

But that said, I'll be playing the next release again as long as there will be no more wipes after this.

And that 45, btw, means that there are NPCs named Benjamin Graven roaming the worlds. I hope I can find him someday.

While I'm super disappointed in the game because it's taken so long to even do what they want to do in that trailer, the music is still mindblowingly good.

I still got my Starboard server running that's listed in the OP, feel free to jump on anytime guys. Keeping it updated and everything :)

EDIT: Enabled nightly beta for the winter update stuff.

As someone whos put 500 hours into Terraria will I like this?

I wanted to like Terraria but felt it was missing something. I still put in 30 hours into Terraria. Starbound's beta I've put in 55 hours and it feels like it's doing what I felt was missing. It has more charm, a wider scope, and IMO better controls and combat.

I will be on the lookout for him

If you enjoyed Terraria you'll definitely enjoy Starbound, there's a lot of additional features and neat content. Endless worlds to explore as well. :)

EDIT: Looks like the server is failing to start after enabling nightly.. Hoping I can get it figured out, I wanted to check out some of that new stuff.

For nightly you need to go to the actual folder and click the application, I believe.

I also was getting errors upon starting which caused me to have to delete the universe folder when I used the nightly build.

As it says, nightly is broken, really broken. ;) But still a load of fun once you get it working.

Looking forward to the next stable update!

looks like I was able to get it working after your suggestion. Nightly server is up and running :)

Yeah, I love Terraria but I find it hard to build and craft in Terraria now too after 60 hours of Starbound. Starbound is pretty much Terraria in space on steroids, with improved everything and near infinite worlds to explore courtesy of your ship which is a mobile base. Better crafting, better building, better music, better exploration, better looking, better monsters, better combat, better role playing elements, better quests, better biomes, better dungeons. It's just...better than Terraria.

And I say that as a huge Terraria fan with over 160 hours into the game, lol. The only thing Terraria "might" have over Starbound are the boss fights, but that is subjective and may even change before release anyway. Terraria has a nice solidified theme though and is a superbly crafted game. Starbound is just ...better.

Bought on steam. Will buy the soundtrack for 5 bucks.

http://store.steampowered.com/app/268090/

I love the soundtrack.

I regret pre-ordering this game. Not that I don't think it'll be fun, but I picked it up before it was "early access" and was under the impression it would be releasing in a few months time. I'm certain the extra year will really make it shine but I haven't touched it knowing that the final release will be so vastly different that I don't want to burn out before it's even completed.

I played through Terraria with a friend and it was a huge blast shortly before this game went up for pre-order so it's probably best it's been so delayed. But still... pre-orders are the worst and this game didn't change my mind on them.

If this is too off topic I'll edit it later, but the only reason I stopped playing Terraria was because of that dumb time consuming Corruption after you beat the game, ain't got no time for that crap.

Does Starbound have anything similar? I'll steer clear if it does.

I'm not sure what game you played at launch, but I played a very good version of Terraria in space, and plan on playing something much better than Terraria when this is officially in a released state.

That's sort of where I am when these two games are concerned. I ended up playing a far from complete version of starbound longer than a completed version of terraria. Just think the simple act of planet hopping and having no clue what youre going to find kept me playing for hours. I only took time to dig on one or two planets to really explore them fully and sometimes id find some weird temples or whatever.

I'm in the opposite camp. I bought in right away and immediately sunk in about 60 hours. Now I'm waiting for a large patch so I get to dive back in with all the updates.

Well, I learned with Minecraft that I don't do beta access very well. I'll play the earlier builds until I'm done with them and then when the game finally releases, I simply can not get back into them. Despite the extra content it just feels I've finished the game. I only put like... twenty minutes in on Starbound to get a sense of what it was like and stopped.

So, yeah, I know some people like pre-orders and early access but they're really not for me. As I said, I'm a little disgruntled because when I got it, it was before it was announced it would be doing the early access stint so I thought it was releasing within a few months. It's my fault since I don't buy pre-orders for this reason but I'd been following Starbound since its announcement at the time.

I suppose I got a five dollar discount or whatever it was for grabbing the pre-order but I still wouldn't do it again. I'm more of a "wait a year after release and grab on sale" kind of guy.

If I was skilled in modding, I would definitely make Casino planets where you can use slot machines and stuff, and also have yourself be rewarded with an item (that could be special or unique) for beating an arcade game or something. I love how easily mod-friendly this game is.

Nah, you don't have to go through all of that. You just politely ask anything about the development of the game they'll lock your thread all the same.

You then sell off all your fuel and belongings to fulfill a debt and are stuck on the planet forever. Or until you murder the guy who beat you in poker and steal your money back.

Hype! We have three licenses for Starbound in my house but we shelved the game a while back, not wanting to burn out on the beta. We can't wait for this update. Love dat musics.

The only thing I was missing in Starbound is a magic weapons as I always pick the mage class in RPGs, but now with PSI staves I'm super happy.
Yes, I know it's science in Starbound.
