Like what?So because of GTA and TLOU we can no longer vote for smaller games which often get staggered releases between different platforms?
Rogue Legacy springs immediately to my mind.Like what?
I didn't play The Last of Us or GTA V in 2013.
They were released as new on a platform I did actually own in 2014, I bought them as new in 2014, and played them for the first time in 2014.
Why shouldn't I be allowed to vote for them? They were 2 of the best games I played this year.
You're forgetting the MCC.The only remake this year was Pokemon and only significant remaster is GTA V.
Hopefully no one votes for them though.
I can see a category of their own, but in no way should a remaster be up for GOTY. We should be celebrating new, original ideas that show the industry we appreciate such risks.
Yeah, GTA V is my goty like it was last year. Gaming this year has been slow.
Obviously not feasible as that would disqualify most sequels as well.I can see a category of their own, but in no way should a remaster be up for GOTY. We should be celebrating new, original ideas that show the industry we appreciate such risks.
1st person mode is a change other than "upscaling" though.
Of course it doesn't. Nor will Shovel Knight next year. That's not a remaster, Rogue Legacy PS3/PS4/Vita should obviously be allowed?
It released on PC in 2013. I can't see how you'd allow an identical game on a different platform, but disallow an enhanced version of a game on a different platform. That's not a remaster, Rogue Legacy PS3/PS4/Vita should obviously be allowed?
The rules are changing this year."Remasters" are ports. We've had rules in place for ports since forever.
Are risks more important than the quality of the game though? There are games that have taken risks and/or were creative but just simply weren't good games. Should those games be considered for top 10 lists more than remasters of great games, with some of those remasters doing more to the original game than some actual sequels that get released during a year?
Like I said before, I think there's enough people here who wouldn't vote for remasters and/or feel they shouldn't be eligible to the point in which making them ineligible probably isn't worth the effort in the first place. I say just let people here vote for what they want/enjoyed the most this year.
Obviously not feasible as that would disqualify most sequels as well.
Depends on the nature of the remaster. The MCC at its core is a collection of ports, however it also contains a bunch of new stuff. Something like TLOU is just a straight up port."Remasters" are ports. We've had rules in place for ports since forever.
One could make a semantic argument about what constitutes the dividing line between new and old. Does a "new" resolution, "new" framerate etc count as new stuff? What exactly makes a new game? The disc that is GTAV Remastered or TLoUR was not on shelves last year and the content therein could not, in specificity, be in played last year. You could have played GTAV, but you didn't play GTA V Remastered. I mean, really you get into issues of what constitutes a significant enough change to count as "new." Should we count GTA V but discount the Halo MCC? I don't think the MCC collection should be thrown out by any stretch of the imagination because while it's a port, it has tons of stuff you have never touched before.Because they're not new games? Should resident evil one count next year when the remake comes out just because some people haven't played it? The award should be for games that were new in 2014 only.
The last two previous winners were TLOU and Journey. No way was timetokill gonna grit his teeth through a three peat.
*snip*
Isaac Rebirth certainly deserves eligibility, it is its own release and game. If the new rules disqualify Rebirth, someone will get into trouble.
I hope not. Otherwise DriveClub gonna get robbed in that 'Most broken at launch game" award.
If you hadn't voted for it before, I mean.It released on PC in 2013. I can't see how you'd allow an identical game on a different platform, but disallow an enhanced version of a game on a different platform.
As I said though, I'm sure it'll be clarified when the rules are posted.
So I can vote for any PC game any year? Neat. One could make a semantic argument about what constitutes the dividing line between new and old. Does a "new" resolution, "new" framerate etc count as new stuff?

I don't think the usual "remasters" should be eligible. Something like Binding of Isaac: Rebirth, which has a huge amount of changes and tons of new content is different. Perhaps it should be like journal submissions of conference papers: at least 30% completely new content![]()
Good riddance I say. There goes all of EA's sports games.![]()
Way to take semantics to the next extreme. So I can vote for any PC game any year? Neat.

Probably in a category of its own.

The rules are changing this year.
Stuff like GTA V and TLoU? Absolutely not.
But something like Kingdom Hearts 2 Final Mix that hasn't been released in English before? I'm not sure where to stand tbh.
Well, there is no voting for worst game of the year,so KH2 shouldn't be considered either way.
Suikoden 2 is being released on PSN this week. A lot of people will play it for the first time ever, because it's been extremely rare until now. Would you agree to Suikoden 2, a 1998 PSX game, being eligible for the GotY 2014 awards because of this?

I'm leaning towards them counting. I didn't play TLoU last year, played it last month, and it certainly is on my GOTY list.
