Fighting Games Weekly | Dec 8-14 | Sony pleads the FiF

In all honesty I think the base for the SF4 net code was solid as fuck when you had low ping with someone. Playing SF4 in the vanilla days on 360 and the GFWL of AE PC was amazingly smooth for me. I played online with friends and random all the time and the thought of lag or the fact that I was online barely ever occurred to me. The PC version in particular I think was set to have almost no frames of input delay and it worked very well.

Really the only issues that plagued it were performance issues in the latest entry (online requires more horsepower than just offline so PS3 and to a more minor extent 360 would drop frames in more demanding stages and I guess the game is programmed in a way so that this forces the games of both players stall for it). The PC version is just bugged to hell and does not run properly after the transition to Steam as the game no longer handles the opening and closing of multiple connections the way it was originally programmed to anymore (it just leaves you connected with multiple people resulting in you getting progressively DDoS'd harder the longer you play). The people working on the PC port now are not the people who originally developed it which is probably why they haven't been able to fix it. When I play a private Endless with Americans/Canadians (I'm in Toronto) in a controlled setting where I'm only connected to my opponent and vice versa the matches are absolutely flawless.

So, those issues aside, it seems like SF4's netcode is designed to work really well when you've already got a nice connection to whoever you're playing. But if your connection to your opponent is borderline or sub-par below a certain threshold the game will start to jitter/stall. They actually modified this threshold to vary between different versions of the game with the PC originally being set the strictest (but it made for the best matches when the connection was good as the network delay is reduced between inputs). Of course when they rolled out that band-aid "fix" for the Steam version somewhat recently they made it more lenient in the hopes that it would alleviate the issues.

All of these reasons could also explain why SF4 on PSN is considered worse than XBL. The PSN infrastructure/netcode itself isn't actually worse. It's just that the PS3 hardware will drop more frames more often than on 360 in addition to more PS3's being hooked up wirelessly as the entire population using the original non-wifi 360 models are forced to play wired. The net delay tolerance is probably more lenient on PS3 as well. The Japanese (who have far superior connections to us in the west) playing eachother with flawless connections on XBL are another result of how SF4 handles netplay.

It will be interesting to see how they handle online this time around. They shouldn't have anymore performance issues as the game is being developed for just one console and also PC from day 1. The wireless on PS4 is also a lot better than on last-gen consoles. I have a strong feeling that even if they just use a upgraded version of what they used in SF4 the online experience will still end up a lot better than what we have in SF4.

An implementation of GGPO or a well-developed rollback code would be great, though.

It could be. I feel like it's harder to get the NAT settings right on a PS3 compared to a 360 for me, forgot what it's at now.

We both have the same ISP and pretty much the same speeds.

Ping could be better. Oh well, I just play offline with him frequently anyways.

Why is my upload speed that much.....? What sucks is Marvel still feels like crap playing against someone who lives 15 minutes away from me. That's PS3 for ya.

I think deep down inside, you probably know that it's the Marvel netcode at fault and not the PS3.

Unless you idiots are playing wireless.

Did anyone watch the NEC Xrd Red vs Blue team tournament Saturday? First time I've been on a real stream in anything at 1h 03 min 30 sec. http://www.twitch.tv/funkyp/v/3591028 Lots of good footage of my local boys Sage and Lofo afterwards too in this (at the time) 2-day old game.

It was definitely the most fun tournament weekend of my life all around and the ideal send-off for North American GGXXAC+R. Would anyone believe me if I said that I went 50-50 with Satou's Johnny in casuals? That I got a perfect round against Ruu's Bridget? That I beat Mynus 3-2 in the +R mirror match? Boggles my mind that I actually became decent at this game in the end. I don't even want to move on to Xrd now, except that I have faith it'll help spread the Guilty Gear goodness.

Ever since my OG 360 days, I have played wired. My cousin plays wireless and probably doesn't know what an Ethernet cable is.
He does but doesn't choose to do anything which is why we stopped playing Marvel online.

I watched it, but it didn't click that it was you until now. If you're that good at casuals, you need to get your MM game on :P

By the way, I saw Degen post, his avatar is hilarious. I wonder if I can get lackies one day and overthrow all the T. Hawk players here who think they know what spacing is.

What's shocking is that 31% of US has worse Internet than this.

That 31% are the poverty monsters on twitch chats.

I missed catching you on stream during the Xrd Red v Blue but honestly, Guilty Gear had an amazing presence at NEC. It also helped that +R with Satou and Ruu was just a nonstop roller coaster of "who the fuck was crazy enough to put this game together and have it all work this well". I fuckin' love me some Johnny.

As someone who lives in an area with no scene, online play is literally why I buy these games. I hope to see improvements in net play, but I doubt it with the infrastructure here in NA.

I truly fear the day Capcom announces they are taking umvc3 online down.

I think out of all the console fighters I've played, Skullgirls is still the best for me online. It just plays so smooth.
Here to Florida felt like offline for me, it was really amazing. (I just need to commit to returning to the game and learning Squigly)

I don't know what comes next after that. Maybe Marvel 2 for me? I think some people had some small problems, but it worked fine for me. Did ROM and Iron Man fly/unfly stuff on EC connections. Felt better than 3rd Strike online strangely enough.

Damn, that's pretty awesome, actually. Lots of accomplishments right there in just one event.

No steam? I'd gladly play Squig mirrors once in a while.

Anyone got fav GG Xrd players? I want to watch some vids, lol.

FAB as Potemkin, Ogawa as Zato, Hase as Slayer, Roi as Sol, and OSCA as I-No.

There's probably more, but those are the ones I really enjoy seeing.
Feel free to friend me if you want mirrors with Squigly. I keep her as my backup for low and mid level matches, but I still really enjoy using her and I don't get many opportunities to play with gaffers.

I might ask for advice when I get back into it. I pretty much can't play the game at all since I'm not quite sure what I'm doing compared to other fighters.
I need to put in some time and sit down with it. There's a lot I like about the game, but I haven't invested much time yet.

Edit: No steam version just yet. I don't have a gaming computer (or even a good computer), but I might buy the steam version in the future when I do get one.

anyone here use cronusmax? there is one on my local bestbuy and i just discovered that guilty gear has no moonrunes even if you buy it from the japanese psn

Cronus' old devices are tournament banned for valid reasons, so be careful.

Edit: Also I'd like to get a PS3/4 TE2 by Christmas but I don't think that is going to happen.

Na, we really need to start putting the blame on the companies that are developing the games here. Stronger infrastructure or not there are methods of developing a game's netcode (sup rollback) that are just objectively better for a fighting game experience. These guys just need to start tweaking their fighting game engines with the flexibility to handle something like rollback from the outset. We shouldn't be settling for anything other than the bar raised by games like Skullgirls and other GGPO enabled titles.

FAB - Potemkin

I certainly have a handle on Skullgirls and that style of VS game more than I do with the majority of ArcSys fighters, they just click with me. Really the only two of fighting games that I feel really comfortable with are VS. games and King of Fighters (dynamic jump system yo). Feel free to shoot me a message whenever if you ever get into the mood for it. Squigly (and most characters in SG) is pretty straightforward once you get a handle on how her stances work and the awkwardness of not having an airdash. Really her biggest problem in Eliza-edition is that she just doesn't have access to some of the more advanced guard cancelling techniques have been added in the game due to a glitch that's been resolved in the PC version. The wait for console Beowulf/Robo-Fortune continues ...

Some cable dudes came to the apartment building last week to upgrade our internet and now nobody can even connect reliably lol

Except when I'm downstairs in the common room but that sucks since its small and usually already packed.

I just use my phone for the web until my 15gb/month runs out then I cry myself to sleep.

There's a reason the meme for the weekend was "God's Gift. Praise be." The game is divine.

Damn, that's pretty awesome, actually. Lots of accomplishments right there in just one event.

I think a lot of GG players at NEC came out of this weekend on the overall positive. Incredible atmosphere all weekend long. I normally play a bit of everything at tournaments, but besides a dozen Vampire Savior casuals, my three UNIEL tourney matches and my one KOFXIII match before I withdrew from the free tournament because +R was starting, too much good was coming out of Guilty Gear to get distracted by anything else.

so i gave my friend a super street fighter 4 steam key

he says it shows up as ultra street fighter 4

wat

edit: disregard i get it

I'm far from a senpai ;_;. I was busy all weekend doing the drinks and Saturday I got bodied by running DFC. Any spare game time was spent on P4U2 and UNiEL.

Ooh nice! Will have to look into going. I like how they're supporting KI.
Fraudulence exposed:

J Rawk!

Welp I'm ordering.

Rule of fighting game netcode.

It's fucking shit unless proven otherwise.
KI proved itself to be honest.

MyPersonExperienceWithSF4sNetcode.txt
Completely agreed. I spent the majority of SF4 online and it worked prett much all the time.

All these speeds ain't mean shit when the other persona is playing you with wifi running through 5 brick walls from his toaster.

Fighting games weakly.

Just had an idea about the mechanics in SF5. What if you could hit MP+MK to gain 1 bar of meter for an EX move, and all it would cost you is $1 on your credit card.
