Super Smash Bros. for Wii U |OT| True Potential of Smash Bros.

8 player smash is basically ridiculously hectic. it doesn't suffer from slowdown or some such as far as I know. I didn't know it would do 8 people on 1 console, wasn't even aware that was possible, thought controllers max.
I checked the Wiki, and it says upto 8 players at once on special stages but it doesn't really do a very good job of clarifying the details to be fair. I thought that naturally meant for one console. I've got 3 so it's not a big deal if I need to hook up more than one in the ward.

I think the setup is:

1 Gamepad + 7 Wii U Pro Controllers / Wiimotes / Wiimotes + Nunchuks / Classic Controller Pro connected to Wiimotes

or

8 Gamecube controllers using the adapter
So I need one gamepad at least. That's fine. I plan on using 7 Wii U Pro Controllers. I'll get a few more spare in case one of them messes up or something.

Edit:

well you can't do 8 online, how did you think 8 player smash worked? its even in the commercial with 8 kids sitting in a room ;)

That's a good link, and it's pretty clear.

I guess it's down to performance, but I can always cut down to four player rounds instead if it's really necessary. I'll take Mario Kart 8 as a backup just in case anyway.

Thanks guys, really appreciate it.

Special stages mean the stage selection is limited to the huge stages and certain versions of normal stages e.g. Battlefield and Big Battlefield.

Just to be clear -- and I'm not saying that you weren't aware of this -- but the "or" above is not an exclusive or. You can use one GamePad, 3 Pro Controllers, and 4 GameCube controllers via the adapter just as a for instance.

Can you replace the Gamepad with an extra Gamecube controller, or are you forced to use the Gamepad when using Wii U Pro Controllers (i.e. 1 Gamepad, 3 Wii U Pro, 4 Gamecube -> 3 Wii U Pro and 5 Gamecube)?

You are not forced to use the game pad. You can use which ever controllers you want. They can all be wii motes, or pro controllers, or 4 gc and 4 pro etc

*groan*

Gonna be honest, Smash U is the least enthusiastic I've been about investing in any Smash game to date. I've burnt myself out with the 3DS version, which handled some ideas better than the Wii U. The cross platform content/release idea has been poorly realised in my opinion, especially considering you cannot transfer the roster. Most of the new stages in both the 3DS and U version are unfavourable to me, ruining interesting layouts on an insistence to shift the stage into new forms and/or introduce hostile NPCs.
Yeah, Smash 4 is my favorite but the stages are garbage, some are even ugly too.
Just give Hyrule Temple or the colisseum for awhile, im also fond of the Pikmin stage, reminds me of Pikmin 3.

You only have to use the Gamepad if you have 7 wireless controllers and no GC controller. Any combination that involves at least one GC controller lets you have 8 players without any of them using the Gamepad.

Thanks, but I don't think it's related - they see me online, game just won't show the "now recruiting" yellow button to them :/

EDIT: Sorry DP.

Did you try switching the setting? Or are you just assuming that it isn't related? I'd switch it off/on and then off again and see if that fixes things.

You don't HAVE to use the GamePad ever. It's just that I assume that it connects using the same BlueTooth connection type (at least I think it's BlueTooth, might be something else I don't know), and there can only be eight of those connections. And the GamePad is ALWAYS connected. So, it takes up a connection whether you plan to use it or not. That's why there can only be seven Pro controllers. But aside from that, you can mix and match however you want. 2 GC controllers, 3 Pros, two WiiMotes + Nunchucks, and a 3DS? You betcha! It just can't be 8 Pros, or 8 WiiMotes.

I never paid close attention to any of this, but isn't the 5 GHz wifi just the mechanism for the video stream? I mean, the WiiMotes don't communicate on that band, do they? Maybe they do. I honestly don't know.

All the controllers use bluetooth, just the GamePad uses wifi as far as I know, and it uses it for every communication with the Wii U. It uses some kind of modified wifi protocol which enables low latency communication.

Okay SmashGAF, I have a question, and hopefully thou art is able to help with this. Simple for the most part.

I'm doing a tournament for some kids and Wii U and Super Smash Bros. is what I'm using this year for the competition. I understand Smash is 8 players local multiplayer, but I've never tested this (my copy is going to arrive about a day or two before the planned event).

Does anyone know how the game performs when you have so many people playing at once?

Secondly, can eight Wii U Pro Controllers be connected to the console without any issue? I'm guessing this won't be an issue, but may as well ask just in case.

Looks like the controller question has been resolved. As for how well it plays, all gameplay offline plays flawlessly. Things to make sure of are that you have a big TV, and pick stages that work with your TV size. The stages known as The Great Cave Offensive and Palutena's Temple are ridiculously big, which has the effect of making the characters tiny on the screen. I imagine with a huge screen that this would be less of an issue, but I don't like playing those stages on my 42" tv.

Oh my god all-star mode with Sheik and Zelda were horrible.

If someone wants to do the All-star challenge (or just doing it with Duck Hunt Duo and Ike), you must know that the knockback of physical attacks of the ennemies are greatly reduced but the knockback from energy, fire or electric based attack are the same. For example, the Flare blitz for Charizard can kill very early, same for the Pikmins, same for the Lucario and Samus Charge shot and even same goes for the B neutral of Pac-man (I was surprised when I discovered this and also veryyyyy angry).

So what's the consensus on the five best/most useful Challenges to hammer? I'm thinking:

- Clear All-Star on Hard with every character
- Clear Classic on 7.0 with every character
- Collect all of the special moves
- Collect all of the custom headgear
- Either collect 300,000 G or collect all of the custom headgear

The 9.0 Classic challenges all seem really difficult if you're not amazing at the game, but I imagine they can probably be cheesed through somewhat reliably with the right custom setups. Am I right?

And I know the bumping into the Metroid one for Smash Tour is a pain in the ass, but it seems a waste to use a hammer on that...

7.0 with all characters sounds like something you can do from the get go if you know about it in advance since you need to complete it with all characters for their trophies any way.

The all-star and the classic one are mandatory, same for the headgar one. Custom maybe I guess. The 300 000 G is not really necessary, with the Dr Mario challenge, you will have enough money to unlock this. I will also add the 50 000 blocks challenge in trophy rush which is really long. And the metroid challenge is really not a waste because it's REALLY a pain in the ass, to be honest, the 9.0 challenges can be shorter to do than this.

Also, I'm doing with the all-star mode the 700 trophies challenge and even with all the trophies of classic mode and all-star mode, I will have not enough trophies (like 690 or 695). The trophy shop sells not new trophy anymore (or maybe one new but it's very rare). So I can recommend this also.

Anyway, Tingle is my last wild trophy. Why me?

Yeah, only problem is that means you have to be good enough with every character to beat every form of Master Core (except Master Fortress) with them, which I'm not. I'm good enough with several characters to do that, but definitely not all of them.

Yeah, I've been spending a lot of gold on Trophy Rush and filling out my trophies in the Trophy Shop, though, so even with the Dr. Mario challenge completed I only have around 200,000 G. Not sure where that last 100,000 is going to come from...

And yep, thought about hammering the Trophy Rush one too. But if that can just be done over time, I'd rather not use it on that...

Serious question.
What are you talking about?

I feel like 7.0 Classic isn't actually that hard, unlike All-Star you have two lives per match and if you start on like 7.5, you still have a chance if you game over once due to bad luck. If you're planning on doing Classic with every character already and are half decent at Master Core without his Fortress form, it's just normal tedium of getting through classic with every character with the occasional failure.

I still can't complete Classic on 7.0 :/

I suck so hard at Master Core, his sword form keeps damaging me. Guess I need to dodge more effectively.

Oooor... are there any usefull items to equip fighters with to really damage Master Core?

If that's only a matter of time, doing classic on 7.0 isn't really that hard, I did it with almost every character on the first try (begin on 7.5 to have a second chance).

You can farm the 100 000 gold on crazy orders after ten turns, you get a lot of gold.

Master Core is just a matter of knowing the pattern, except the master swords, you can easily dodge every attack of the master core if you know their patterns

Clearing Classic on 7.0 with all characters was more time-consuming than difficult, but I will probably use a hammer on the All-Star Hard one because I don't feel like going through countless failures with characters I haven't mastered.

I'm not going to use them on challenges that require collecting all customs/headgear/etc. because I know I will get them eventually.

If that's only a matter of time, doing classic on 7.0 isn't really that hard, I did it with almost every character on the first try (begin on 7.5 to have a second chance).

I'm still irritated by this.

Why lower the difficulty every time I get a game over? Does Sakurai think that's going to help our egos or encourage us to go on?

It's not GamePad that takes that 8th slot, it's Wii U itself. Notably, PlayStation 3 uses Bluetooth for its pads, and it allowed up to 7 of them at once (although I don't remember any game taking advantage of this right now).

OK so I have just played this game for the first time. I have never played smash before, and it has been years since I played any fighting game. Basically I didn't have a clue what was going on. Can anyone give me some pointers?

I am not looking do for any advanced tips, more like the absolute basics.

How do you win (I think hit people and knock them off screen)
What mode should I be playing for beginner single player?
How do you interact/pick up power ups?
If you are punched off a platform is there someway of manoeuvring in the air to get back on?
Some tips on how to fight!

I can confirm that the GamePad sends the input over wifi and not Bluetooth. I've had some issues with the video stream dropping, and when the stream drops, the input does as well.

1000 turns in Smash Tour, and I have seen one Metroid. Just sayin'!

What if you turn on the wii u and navigate with a pro controller? You don't have to have the gamepad connected. In fact, my gamepad's battery is dead. I think I'll try this today.

anyone up for some games?

Yass

STay at the title menu. "How to play" comes on and shows you anything you need.

Pick up items with attack. Default A button. You press what direction you'd like to try and go when hit hard.

Don't only spam Special attacks. They're only so good.

Also, try checking out a beginners guide on smashboards

The 300000 G is unbreakable, but it's super easy to get by gambling on Spectator. In about 30 minutes the matches tend to repeat a lot so you can rack up money really quick.

I used my hammers on:

Classic on 7.0 with everyone
All star on Hard with everyone
Destroy 50000 blocks in Trophy Rush
Clear Classic 9.0 as Marth in 12 minutes
Recover stats from a Metroid in Smash Tour

I'm regretting the Marth one. I popped it because I just didn't want to be arsed with it but after seeing how much proper Equipment abuse breaks the game I know now I really didn't need to use a hammer. I'll do it later along with an Equipment-less no death run down the road. The others I just used because I ain't got time for that grinding, except for one...

FUCK THAT METROID CHALLENGE. I did goddamn Smash Tour using four gamecube controllers by myself 6 goddamn times with 25 turns each. That Metroid didn't even fucking show up ONCE!! Why?? Screw that! That was the angriest Gold Hammer anyone has ever used.

Is there any way to view the profile specific records put against each other? We loved looking how often each player died to another in the past - is this gone? I couldn't find it...
