So what were the bombas of 2014?

When I say bomba, the game can be a financial success but still considered disappointing compared to relative expectations.

BOMBA:
Assassin's Creed - Both the PAL and NPD threads have shown that Rogue + Unity is down on Black Flag across all platforms, and thoroughly deserved after the game's issues (plus I hate Ubi's handling of the franchise anyway). In the UK Watch Dogs on PS4 at launch outsold Unity across all platforms!

Call of Duty - The decline continues, we just have a thread detailing that CoD is down 27% yoy in the US, and as for the UK AW did outsell Ghosts on launch week but it had an extra day and no staggered launch.

Murdered: Soul Suspect - nuff said the game killed it's studio before it even came out, shame as it's got some really good ideas and is worth a look.

MAYBE:

Dragon Age: Inquisition - the absence of this game in the latest NPD top 10 has to be a worrying sign but that alone isn't enough to comment =/

Alien: Isolation - so many significant discounts on this game so quickly can't be a good sign.

The Evil Within - same as above.

SURPRISE:

Lords of the Fallen - this game was apparently profitable, who'd a thunk it? Glad to see smaller AA titles like this thrive :)

Agree? Disagree? Any others people want to chime?

I really don't think you can say COD was a bomb when it still outsold like, everything.

Sales are down yeah but its still a monster.

I wouldn't say COD is a bomba, I think most people expected a slight drop off after the damage Ghosts did.

Dragon Age definitely seems to me like it should have sold more, but I think a lot of people went digital with that one.

Little Big Planet 3 sold like 99k on PS4.

I remember a lot of people around here talking it up like it was gonna move systems cause it is kid friendly or something.

surprised Destiny is not on the list.. i mean sure it sold well to guarantee a sequel but reading threads and comments it seems lukewarm. Granted people do enjoy the game but i feel it was a major let down.

We are talking about sales, an area in which Destiny certainly did not fall short.

Dragon Age is is no I'd say. It's not surprising it didn't make Top Ten when you look at that list, anyone walking down the street knows GTA, Pokemon, Halo, Assassin's Creed, etc.

Here's what BioWare's Jarret Lee said:

"Hi guys - obviously it's a drag not to see DAI on that top 10 list for November. I can't really give any figures of course...However, from what I know about the sales numbers (a) DAI is doing great and well ahead of it's predecessors, and a significant percentage of sales of DAI are digital and not tracked by NPD. If anything, I'm more worried about the weird signals this chart sends to the market about DAI, as opposed to the reality of our unit sales :)"

I kinda doubt Unity bombed when you consider all the Xbox One bundles.

Sunset Overdrive might have bombed.

Also Forza Horizon 2, Driveclub, Bayonetta 2, LBP3.

Assassins Creed: Unity was definitely a bomba, it seems like they're rushing content out so fast they're not taking the time to make sure the games actually work before releasing them.

Yea I went bought it digitally so I could pre-load it, and I never buy Digital unless it's digital only. Hopefully that has a bit to do with it.

And Thief, as someone, already mentioned, did not sell well.

I don't think anyone really expected it to sell very well. Received very little marketing aside from a few commercials week of launch and was going up against other games of the month like AC, Far Cry, GTA, etc.

We don't have sales numbers for Driveclub but all signs point to it selling very well. Someone in the NPD thread mentioned it sold 80k last week in the UK alone.

I think Lords of Shadow 2 tanked.
It turned a profit. Probably marginal though.

How could Dragon Age bomb? It won awards, was pasrt of a respected franchise from a hit developer, had the EA hype machine coming for it, it's a worthy fix for the Skyrim thirst, was launched on 5 platfforms.... I'm astounded.

There's bomba and then there is a relative bomba. COD might loosely fit into the relative bomba category because the series may be declining.

LittleBigPlanet 3 is struggling so far.

How is Disney Infinity 2.0 doing? Lego Batman 3, Lego The Hobbit, Lego Movie Videogame?

If what I've heard is true, then Alien: Isolation could be considered. It's a fantastic game, but I think the total sold was around 150k to date.

Damn shame.

And Evil Within was in October's NPD top 10 I believe.

DriveClub. 1 year delay. Terrible launch. A delayed game eventually good my ass, no but seriously its a fun game but the lack of critical, commercial success and the failure of the social features really paints a picture of a studio that is going through a lot of problems and no direction.

Bayonetta 2? How did Platinum and Nintendo feel about it?

They don't have to say anything, we all know it bombed like a motherfucker.

LBP3, in comparison to its two predecessors, has done significantly bad sales wise. That's a game that should've come out as a more polished, bug-free product in late January, but Sony decided to release it amidst all the big-hitting titles of November and plagued with glitches. It came out the same week as GTA V, Dragon Age and Far Cry 4 for crying out loud.

Speaking of which, things aren't looking too hot for Dragon Age either.

Hmm and now with the new patch and fixes people are buying it. Still the best race game i played all year and with the weather in it..well it changes everything. Also the online stuff was not working yeah that was bad and they didn't expect that many that would cripple it the game still works. It is a solid race game a very solid one even.

Im sure we had this thread last week....

Anywho bomb seems to mean digferent things to different people nowadays as i would not consider most of those games im yhe op as bombs, especially those on PC so have unknown unit sales.

AC:U and COD aren't bomba, they may have sold less then usual but they still sold a lot. Murdered Soul Suspect, The Elder Scrolls Online, Thief and Yaiba are bona fide bombas IMO.

Sunset Overdrive looks like it did rather mediocrely compared to expectations. I'd be really surprised if a sequel happens.

Given that EA was okay with making the game free on PS4 temporarily, I'm guessing PvZ: Garden Warfare did pretty badly too.
