So what were the bombas of 2014?

TEW was my biggest disappointment on PS4.. I should have got it during the Steam sale instead.

The performance of the PS4 version is just terrible.

That's personal bomba though.

The Evil Within charted high on October's NPD and got a special note for its performance as the highest selling Survival Horror game in some time.

Granted Bethesda themselves never officially commented on the sales or provided actual numbers.

Alien Isolation probably didn't sell as well as it should have. That said it seems like the team were thinking about sequel ideas nonetheless.

Said it before and I'll say it again, I think LBP3 is the sort of game that will have legs and will do well with bundles. Then again I wasn't aware it had performance issues until now =/

Your criteria for bomba is so loose that almost every game could fit in there if a person is determined enough.

Just wanted to promote discussion, plus a lot of franchises are down on their predecessors.

LBP3 was bundled with a bunch of PS4. I think it'll do ok.

Bayonetta 2 bombed hard. Nintendo fans being Nintendo fans. Glad Nintendo allowed it to exist.

LBP3 is sad to hear but at least Dragon Age did better than many of us thought it did. CoD AW is in no way a bomba. It outsold every game in November. AC Unity isn't one either given the Xbone bundle sold so much. It certainly is a bomba in terms of quality.

But my main question is, how exactly did the MCC do? Was it really a system seller or were people turned off by its terrible launch?

What about The Elder Scrolls Online? The only thing I've heard about it in the last 6 months was the quiet delay of the console version.

Little Big Planet 3 sold like 99k on PS4.

I remember a lot of people around here talking it up like it was gonna move systems cause it is kid friendly or something.

Didn't LBP3 debut with the highest sales in the series in the UK? Or am I thinking of another game?

Did DriveClub even chart during its release?

Forza Horizon 2 never charted in the US either. Why? Because the US is almost irrelevant when it comes to racing games, Europe is where the money is at. DriveClub did fine, I'd bet it was the best selling racing game of the year. The Crew is the one that I'd be worried about (or not, since it's a terrible game).

Anyway, for biggest bombas of 2014, I think I'd go with:
Murdered: Soul Suspects (disappointing because it was a pretty cool adventure game)
Bayonetta 2 (sad, I'm looking forward to finally getting a WiiU and playing it)
The Crew (terrible game, well deserved)
Fantasia: Music Evolved (sad for Harmonix but honestly, predictable)

Didn't hear them chat about it, but I warmed up to it after the very slow intro and I tend to clock about an hour a night on it. I was cautiously interested going in but took the plunge because of the developer pedigree and have been extremely happy with it, but the biggest problem is...

... yep. I've posted videos of it for friends and they are totally confused, because it's not a game that you really get to 'enjoy' by watching video or having someone explain it to you. It's not like Dance Central where you get the concept before going in -- it's a very different experience, and one you really have to play to 'get', which (combined with the Kinect requirement) makes it a very likely bomba candidate. It's probably not for anyone, and the nature of the mechanics/controller mean missed inputs can be annoying, so I won't say it's perfect, but it's a game I really get into when I play (mind you I'm also the person playing solo Rock Band vocals all the time and bouncing around my living room like an idiot, so, hey).

To some extent, I feel it's a bit like NintendoLand and the early WiiU/Gamepad stuff, where it looked like hot garbage but people tended to really like it after they actually sat down and used it.

Yeah it doesn't help that dance central came out at $10 setting a precedent for kinnect games. I wasn't really that interested until I saw the price and bought it since I liked several of the tracks included in the original set.

I bought the xbox one with kinnect for fitness since thats how I used the original kinnect (Fitness Evolved) so I knew I would use it for that and not games. However a bunch of people buying the launch units for $500 with no games may be pretty upset about all the crazy deals recently (like the target $329 + 2 AC games + $50 gift card) and a complete drop of support for kinnect

Scratching my head at the Watch_Dogs and Destiny posts, that's not what a bomba is

On topic: Bayo 2 selling less than the 360 version in Japan is a bomba and very depressing

Dragon Age is is no I'd say. It's not surprising it didn't make Top Ten when you look at that list, anyone walking down the street knows GTA, Pokemon, Halo, Assassin's Creed, etc.

Here's what BioWare's Jarret Lee said:

"Hi guys - obviously it's a drag not to see DAI on that top 10 list for November. I can't really give any figures of course...However, from what I know about the sales numbers (a) DAI is doing great and well ahead of it's predecessors, and a significant percentage of sales of DAI are digital and not tracked by NPD. If anything, I'm more worried about the weird signals this chart sends to the market about DAI, as opposed to the reality of our unit sales :)"

If only they had the capacity to release actual sales figures across platforms and tell us how well it is doing. Oh wait...

Ugh, if there's one thing I hate about this industry, it's that getting real figures on sales is harder than pulling teeth. The one thing they still haven't copied from the movie industry and should is publishing numbers.

Mario Kart 8 and Smash sold just fine. Hell, even Hyrule Warriors "exceeded expectations" though that's not first party

Both sold well below their predecessors which is enough for CODAW to be considered a bomba by some. And yeah, Zelda musou sold above expectations because the production looks like it cost so little.

So uh, 1 game? And it's a musou? OK.

The Crew is the one that I'd be worried about (or not, since it's a terrible game).

the crew is a fantastic game, and I don't think it's doing poorly either. no idea what the sales expectations for it were, but it's guaranteed doing better than tdu2.

bayonetta 2
though it was expected I guess

if it's selling as expected or better it obviously didn't bomb. although I'm not saying it didn't, as I have no idea about numbers or expectations for it.

both Smash and MK8 are on a system with a drastically lower install-base. Considering MK8 has a fucking insane attach rate, these games are doing fine by expectations unless someone expected both to suddenly make the WiiU a Wii-like success.

Mario Kart 8 and Smash Wii U were always going to sell way below their predecessor considering MKW and Brawl were released at the peak of the Wii's life.

Seriously, were you expecting MK8 to sell close to 34 million copies on the Wii U?

Scratching my head at the Watch_Dogs and Destiny posts, that's not what a bomba is

On topic: Bayo 2 selling less than the 360 version in Japan is a bomba and very depressing

the game can be a financial success but still considered disappointing compared to relative expectations.

it did very well financially, but many, many people were disapointed in the game including myself. And the expectations were "biggest game of all time" according to the ad campain

Melee sold more and had a 800k install base if I remember correctly. You are getting way too worked up over this man. Calm down.

Melee was also pretty much a launch title on the Gamecube and didn't have a handheld version released around the same time.

Dragon age tanked at Amazon and is 39 bucks 3 weeks after release. I think its safe to comment.

Well I'm happy that myself and a good deal of other posters I saw in various threads plus obviously customers spoke with our wallets.
You sell DA2 for 59.99, you get enemies.

Titanfall.

Never seen EA and Microsoft hype and market a game so agressively. Hyped to be the COD killer. The game is now a barren wasteland.

I will back up some people saying Destiny as tbh, if I were Activision I'd be worreid about Destiny's long term appeal after the various fumblings of the first game regardles of it's sales. This is supposed to be their next CoD after all.

Watch Dogs though? yeah, no matter what way you cut that, the game was a success in everything except it's own bloody quality >_>

Lords of Shadow 2
Dragon Age Inquisition
Driveclub
Forza Horizon 2
Sunset Overdrive
Bayonetta 2
Little Big Planet 3
AC Unity

The last two may or not be considered okay by the companies in question because of bundle sales, but the main retail SKUs are down from previous installments.

Some weird fucking platform support decisions across the board.

We don't have sales numbers for Driveclub but all signs point to it selling very well. Someone in the NPD thread mentioned it sold 80k last week in the UK alone.
UK numbers include bundled games unlike NPD, so it's not a surprise Driveclub's figures are decent over here.

I say watch dogs for the same reason you said destiny. They obviously wanted watch dogs to be their next yearly franchise alongside assassins creed (launch creed in fall watch dogs in summer) but it doesn't seem like its going to work.

I wonder if the cross-gen and cross compatibility hurt it. For myself, when I found out it was compatible with old LBP levels I lost interest. The concept behind LBP is great, but the core gameplay is severely lacking.
The sad thing is the old levels are barely compatible. Anything moderately complex seems to be broken in some way or other. I was excited to check out some of the top levels since I stopped playing LBP2, but given the state they're in I wish they would have said forget it and taken the series in a more innovative direction.

MS has been quiet about SO numbers.

I am most disappointed and yet personally happy that Microsoft produced so few Sunset Overdrive xbox one bundles. They absolutely KILLED it in sales this november due to the massive discounts, but the only real bundle was the Assassins Creed bundle - black xbox one with AC4 and 5 digitally. The COD and Kinect bundles were $100 more.

Good deal, but if they had even a little foresight how much more exciting would it have been to offer either a AC5 bundle OR a SSOD bundle? I think a lot more people would have been excited to buy an xbox one if it was a one off white console and came with an exclusive IP game.

On the other hand I managed to snag one at a great discount literally hours before it ran out of stock online, so I am pretty happy that I have a fairly unique xbox one for now.

That's stupid, for lack of a better word.

DAI is almost on the level of Origins in both gameplay and story. It's a full redemption for Bioware and the series.

Hell, Hawke and his companions were really great in Shit Mountain. I don't regret playing DA2 for that alone.

I think creamsugar said lbp sold 199k on ps4 and 90 odd something on ps3. I dont think thats a bad start with it launching in the holidays. Npd thread so maybe someone can cross check.

Titanfall was coined as the next COD, even if it did well financially it still bombed hard.

The Elder Scrolls Online launched with an antiquated method of payment, it was bound to fail just as the many other WoW clones that have released, it could have done well as a F2P.
