Favorite Anime Adaptations of Video Games

As someone who isn't all that into anime, I've found myself watching quite a few in the past year or so - several of them being adaptations of popular video games. Danganronpa: The Animation is my favorite series to make the game-to-anime transition, as well as one of my favorite anime series in general. (Though, I didn't start playing the game until I was about halfway through the anime.)

Danganronpa: The Animation is based on the 2010 PSP game, Danganronpa: Academy of Hope and High School Students of Despair (known as Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc in North America). I feel that this animation is very true to the original game, which, in part, is why I feel it is a great series. Like the game, the anime starts off with a rather disturbing sequence, and from that moment onward... I was hooked! I would prefer not to spoil for those who have yet to play the game or watch the anime, so I'll keep my thoughts as concise as I possibly can. I will note, however, that the show moves at a fast pace, one of the common criticisms of this adaptation. That said, it never bothered me as I felt the first episode did a great job of setting up the series' unique premise. Something else I would like to point out - the soundtrack. The soundtrack, composed mostly of songs found in the game, fits the show perfectly. "Beautiful Dead," for example, I feel, is a song that delivers a fine balance of "Hope" and "Despair." Anyways, there are so many reasons as to why I love the animation (and in turn, the video game series itself), but simply put, I would recommend it to fans of the game or those who never plan on picking up the hardware required to play.

To avoid turning this into a "LTTP: Danganronpa" thread, I would like to ask you what some of your favorite (or least favorite, if you prefer) anime adaptations are! Use spoiler tags at your own discretion. ;-) Go!

The Gungrave anime doesn't really have much to do with the video game for the most part, but it's a damn good series regardless. I still rewatch it every once in a while.

Inazuma Eleven. Straight up.

I'm a sucker for sports anime, so that might have something to do with it, but the anime itself really captures the feel of the game.

The games are fun, and really have interesting mechanics to them. I feel like the dubs are pretty bad, but what can you do?

Hoping for more of them to show up on the eShop here in the US.

I enjoyed the first Persona 4 Animation, even if the budget was pretty tight in the original airing.

Also, the Wild Arms anime was kinda fun, even if it really had NOTHING to do with the game series.

Blazblue alter memory, the thread?

Seriously, the only one that was about decent that i can remember was super robot wars OG/the inspector, dunno if visual novels count, still full of shit but the fate adaptations by ufotable are gorgeous visually

There was a tekken anime :motion picture I saw a while back, it was incredibly good along side the new CGI movie

How is Halo legends??

Do visual novels count? Because, to be honest, I don't recall any good anime adaptation of a video game. Hell, even with visual novels most of them are terrible.

Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni (When They Cry) started as PS2 and PC games in Japan. The anime even takes one of the game's mechanics (which I can't spoil) and uses it as part of the plot.

Definitely Gungrave. It wouldn't even seem like it was based off anything if I didn't already know going in.

Danganronpa... is it even a show? I'd call it a Let's Play, but a Let's Play of Danganronpa would be an infinitely better experience than the show. I watched it just a couple months ago to refresh myself going into DR2, and man, I just hated it.

Edit: I've yet to play/watch, but from what I've heard, I imagine Steins Gate would be in the running.

Street Fighter 2 Victory

Take Street Fighter and just fucking make it 90's to the extreme. The show was basically a karate anime buddy cop flick and it was AWESOME

I don't care what people say, I'm still a fan of the Pokemon anime.

Yeah.

I mean the quality of animation and music is great ,but they need more complex plots and less repetitive and predictable scenarios.

They need to start making them for teens at least. The anime right now is 6+ and has been for too long.

anyway
..its final fantasy the warriors within lmao

Danganronpa: The Animation for all the Monokuma gifs it provided.

It was also a pretty competent adaptation for all the grief it gets. With the amount of time it was given, the optional and repetitive stuff was dropped so they could go through the plot. And, hey, it made a certain character even more amazing so cheers for that.

I'll also say the Pokemon anime is a great one too. It really brings the whole Pokemon world to life and definitely makes all 700+ Pokemon interesting.

Sengoku Basara is another awesome adaptation. It manages to over top the games in over the top-ness.

Tales of Vesperia: The First Strike was a pretty good movie too.

I'm going to have to say the one that sticks out the most for me is Gungrave. The first game was great and the anime was even better.

Steins:Gate

Well... it's a "Visual Novel".
But it's on Xbox 360 and PC so I don't care.

This. Also Danganronpa is a visual novel, too.

Does Steins;Gate count? Because if so, Steins;Gate. Edit: fuck, beaten, because of searching for a good version of this gif

Stupid bad tumblr gifs with bad filters on top of them, but it's the only decent gif of this.

Which I don't understand. Pokemon isn't as popular with the children as it used to be back in our day. I forgot about the street fighter anime, but I don't remember a thing about it. Do movies count as animes too?

Persona 4's anime was, in my opinion, excellent. The action scenes were pretty stupid, but it was also really funny.

I actually couldn't stand the Danganronpa anime. There just weren't enough episodes to do it justice. My perspective is from somebody who did enjoy the game though, I'd imagine somebody who hasn't played it would like it more.

Persona 4. What differences does Persona 4 golden anime have compared to the original Persona 4 anime?

Basically Golden only events. It gives no effort in having a cohesive plot and assume everyone watching already knows what has happened so it just jumps around.

Did make the best Adachi episodes ever though.
