The Talos Principle |OT| It's Serious Puzzling, Sam (PS4 port out now!)

Some red levels are fine, some are a real dick! haha

I like that the god narrator even suggests taking a break and coming back to it i.e. sleeping on it, or trying the other levels. But sometimes you're so close to the last gate to get the puzzle piece.
 
Played a little bit last night, just got through the first area and into the temple hub. Got all the tetrominos but no clue where the first star is! There is a star hidden in the first area right? is it obscured by foliage or something?
 
I really liked the demo and want more games like this so I'm forced to support it...but money is tight. I kinda feel bad for paying only 20€ on nuuvem but that's better than nothing I guess.
 
I'm on Level 7 of "Cathedral A", and I'm really loving it. Played for almost 4 hours straight, something that I never do with a game.

I'm loving to read every piece of information, and it's making me interested to read some Philosophical books that were recommended here.

About the story, so far, I'm thinking that it's
an "Adam & Eve" scenario. Elohim is God, the one that talks with us through the terminals is The Serpent, and we can choose to be either Adam and never go into the Tower, or to be Eve and go into the tower, defying Elohim. And maybe that's why we're a robot, because we can be either Adam or Eve.

Can't wait to get home tonight to play it more!
 
Really loving the game so far. Completed everything in Area A except for the star room. Some stars were a bit of a pain though. They like to use hidden switches tucked away in corners, but I'm mainly talking about A3 and A4.

The game went a bit Fez here. I actually liked the puzzle and solution, but was initially stuck because I didn't realize the game wanted me to search for info and use tools outside of it. I guess the fact that you have to use a QR scanner app to read some of those codes should have clued me in on what I had to do.

Maybe it's because I'm using a controller and it's a bit slow and cumbersome to scan around, but I just couldn't find that damn reflector. I knew exactly what I had to do and what the solution would be, but screw that reflector. I know I aimed in that general area earlier and must have just missed it. I'm so irritated because I had to get a hint for it. I hate when I have to use hints for games like this.

Now I'm nervous about stars in areas B and C.
 
I tried the alpha test and it gave me serious motion sickness. Are there any graphics settings that will minimize this?
 
Managed to get all the stars in every level today finally! (Known stars and a few others) So that feels good. My god were some of them fucking hard, holy shit. The one on
Area C Room 3 - Weathertop
was by far my hardest. Took me about four hours including the actual room itself too. Proud that I did every one with no hints or spoilers. Not that I had a choice really, had the game for a month so there wasn't even a community for the game then, only now are star guides coming out.

The whole final act is absolutely incredible. I've still got some stars to clean up, but I need a little downtime first.
 
Whoa, this is finally out! It looks gorgeous and I'm almost certainly going to try it, but is the story bad? I found this simultaneously scary and amusing review on Steam:

stars are appropriately hard. I'd say most red tetriminos are decently hard as well. The record yourself frustrates me.....Blinx...
 
I like it so far, but I'm going to unsubscribe from the thread again to avoid even hints of spoilers. I'm enjoying learning all the bits and pieces myself. It does remind me of Portal and Portal 2 in a good way, the closest I've played in quite some time.

Well, Steam says I played 8.8 hours so far and I'm maybe 1/3 or 1/2 of the way through.

Perhaps much more unusual for me, those 8.8 hours were practically consecutive. I'm not sure I remember the last time I picked up a new game and was glued to it for that long.

It runs great, looks good, has good music, and reminds me quite favorably of Portal 1 and Portal 2. That's about as high praise as I can give a puzzle game. I really like the bits of story.
 
Higher Ground is a damn cool level because it changes up the spatial formula for jamming. So it's more about which gate to jam to open up the path rather than staying on the ground and going one after the next. I've definitely gotten better at some levels now once you realise the triangulation stuff where you can pull out a connector like in Window through a Door.

Got scared the fuck out when I encountered a "ghost" right after Road to Death!

I did look up the solutions to two levels (Deception, Window through a Door), I'll admit to that. It's always a simple setup of certain elements, you just need to plan ahead a lot sometimes especially with the connectors.

I wish the game gave more paint unless if there really isn't some kind of Dark Souls-like asynchronous multiplayer where the messages I can leave can be read by another human player.

Had a good chat with the computer about my consciousness and had to actually renounce my position. This reminds me of the ethics philosophy classes I had to take as part of my degree, here at least the teacher doesn't have an axe to grind.

I'm going to take back what I said earlier about there being a lot of variety in environments. There isn't really, each world has a specific template and most of the levels are not that memorable against each other. But that's just visual fatigue, the level design still is fresh like any good puzzle game.

There is, but they're only viewable by people on your friends list.
 
This game really took me by surprise with all the raving reviews.
I'm kind of surprised it's not getting much attention on GAF.
I'll pick this up during the Steam holiday sale.
 
Just finished up the main story, clocked in at ~20 hours. It's almost certainly my favorite first person puzzle game to date, beating out the Portals in terms of challenge and cleverness despite having less inventive mechanics. If I had a complaint it would be that there were too many puzzles that relied too heavily on carrying gadgets forward with you through the puzzle (a far too common example was needing to leapfrog jammers through gates) and having that be the only significant procedure.

Some standout moments:
Solving Four Chambers of Flying (B5 I think)
Discovering that puzzle rooms aren't necessarily standalone...
Realizing you can put boxes on top of murderbots and have them cart it around
That entire tower climb finale puzzle

Need to go back and try some of those star puzzles now!

GAF as a whole isn't super keen on puzzle games, it isn't a meme factory like Portal was, and even in this thread there's been a number of people, yourself included, balking at paying 40 bucks.

edit: Guess it'll do gangbusters when that first sale hits, at least. Sitting at #4 on Steam's top sellers at the moment, and it's actually been climbing the chart as days go by, so word of mouth appears to be convincing a good number of people to jump in sooner rather than later.
 
Wow, this looks very intriguing (cue avatar quote)! Just saw the Jim Sterling review pop up in my twitter feed, and after seeing all the other extremely positive impressions I'll definitely check this out as soon as I have the chance.

One moment you think the year is over for game releases, then a narrative driven puzzle game shows up out of absolutely nowhere that some are calling GOTY material. Indies and digital game distribution, two of the greatest things in modern gaming.

I got it for $25, the fedora comments are completely unwarranted since this is based off of old texts and not anything new-age or so crazy it might be legit theories.
 
Croteam is such a great developer. I'm really loving this game.

GAF isn't big on PC exclusives, with few exceptions. This will get more attention when the PS4 port is released. ..or people will just complain about the price and call for a PS+ release.
 
Reading the impressions in this thread I decided to buy the game (I seem to rarely buy near-launch PC games anymore). Helped that I made a few dollars by selling my gems to augment some of the cost.

Looking forward to trying it out!
 
First time I've ever heard about this game, immediately caught my attention. Looking forward to buying it after the steam sales are over and never playing it because I only play Dota.

Alley of the Pressure Plates is killing me. I was bad at this stuff in Braid as well.

Forgot that fan blades can be detached.
 
My favorite thing so far is being able to write "
Frogs are people too!
" on the wall like a crazy person, because I sort of accidentally headed down that path in some of these dialog options and was stubborn about it.

Eagles Nest was one of the harder ones for me because that's not how physics work.

Woosh! was easy, but I still have yet to find out what the point of
making the red laser splinter thing float in the air, because you can do that if you jump over the wall and carry an extra fan to use on the pressure plate
. Maybe it's a star thing, i don't know.
 
I thought this wasn't out yet, then I went to metacritic out of curiosity and was amazed that it's sitting at 87. I was going to play it regardless because I like Serious Sam, but man, Croteam did work.
 
I've been trying to dodge spoilers, even for stuff like environments, so I've been hiding from the thread. Thanks to the people using spoiler tags! I really appreciate it.

I just finished C1 and I have a question about that. I got a star, but I used a hilarious and very complicated way to do it, and I -suspect- there's a slightly different way. Plus there's a level feature I can't figure out what to do with.

LEVEL SPOILERS / SECRETS FOR C1:
1. I fell down the trapdoor in the walkway and found the secret room. That's kind of neat, but I couldn't find anything to do there, and I assume you just listen and leave, right?

2. There's a gatling gun guarding a connector, and presumably you are supposed to disable the gun. IS there a way to disable the gun? I scoured the map for a while, including areas inside puzzles, but have not yet found a way to disable it. I don't want told exactly how, just told whether there's a way to disable it I did not find, please.

3. There's a concrete plate not too far from the gatling gun. If you hover the mouse over it, it says Use, as if you can click on it. However, neither clicking nor holding down the mouse does anything. I even put a cube on it and jumped on the cube, and that didn't help either. Is there some way to activate/open this concrete plate?

4. This ties into point 2, but I found a funny way to get the star without disabling the gatling gun. You can simultaneously steal a cube and a connector from the huge castle at the end of the bridge, and bring them all the way back. The cube seems to be useless but I used the connector for the star instead of disabling the gatling gun.
 
Big Lump of Mine(B-7) really stumped me, mostly because they introduce you to a different mechanic this late into the game.
That you can place cubes on top of enemies...I was trying to create some sort of elaborate path for 10 minutes before I accidentally dropped one on top of the mines...I forgot I had to do this for a secret too. Which I had to look the answer for as well because so far excluding the secret this is the first use of this new mechanic.

B5-7 I found to be all around pretty hard suddenly compared to the other levels, also a bit tedious with the constant mine dodging. I've just arrived at C. Is this thing with the Milton guy going anywhere? I get a choice of 10 answers everytime he says something then he writes me off and disappears, the answers you have to choose seem almost out of context with how bad they are sometimes.
 
I'd still really like to know if anyone has answers to the questions in my last post about C1.

On another note, I just got the star in C2, and it was CRAZY. I tried so many different combinations of things that seemed so promising, and were so close to working, but apparently had been just barely blocked by the developers.

And it's currently PC exclusive. GAF is still a console focused forum in terms of overall interest.

Personally, I've put it on my list of things to play when I get done with the other dozen or so things on that list ;)

1. Yes, the room has no other purpose than to listen and leave.

2. Yes, there is a way to disarm the gun.

3. The concrete plate does indeed serve a purpose, however it is nothing in regards to the narrative and progression of the game, it's just a nifty little easter egg. Definitely a time consuming one if you're willing to put in the time.

4. Hahaha, nice way of getting the star. I think the intended way was definitely to disarm the turret and get the connector from there.
