Driveclub weather update out NOW. laawwwwwd.gif

Heh, I'm still half convinced he mistakenly thought he was in a The Crew thread with that crack about the handling.

Yes, but I find it distracting.

The real soundtrack to this game is the screeching of the tires and the revving of the engines.
I ran with custom music for a while there, but yeah, nowadays I keep the menu music only - in race its pure engine and tires and wind, with weather sounds soon enough I hope.

Time for dat 11. Hopefully still a christmas present and not a 15 thing. But I'm quite 9 of 10 that it'll be just in time. Would be 10 of 10 if so.

Yeah um generally not gonna bother taking reviews seriously anymore

i never did i bought this not only on impulse but my love for racing games as this one because i played the heck out of NFS HP 2010 but also back in the day TOCA Touring car racing,Colin Mcrae rally,Grand Prix 2 for example. It's you,the track and getting from A to be B very fast.

I've had the game for a few days, it's great but man do I suck. Picture a drunk guy, now take that drunk guy and put a blindfold on him, that would be me.

Just remember that this is not a straight up arcade racer so as long as you go slow into the corner then fast out, you'll get better as you memorize the tracks.

how good is the single player? my ps+ just expired and I don't plan to renew it until there's a good deal on it. Is the main attraction the online component because I just beat GTA V and was thinking of trading it for Driveclub.

I'm not a big driving game guy but I find the single player engrossing. My only complain is the UI drivers are idiots and constantly crash into you.

Haven't had the music on since I got the game. I usually play with earphones in the DS4 as well - mainly because I can't have the TV loud enough without annoying my wife :)

I think the single thing that really adds to the replayability of this game are the pretty much instant restarts - it's been so long since I've just been able to pause > restart > start > GO! in less than 10s. Talk about next-gen features, for me its a huge one.

And of course the game totally rocks. I'm still favouring this over GTAV and AC:U.

That is how I play the majority of my racing games, with no music and just the car sounds and the environmental sound effects. That is the best way to play a racing game imho.

I just bought it the other day, and I put in 3 hours, and only finished the Rookie mode. Completed each challenge, and that was only like 40/250 stars or somethin. Then there's the 2 free dlc packs.

I let my ps+ expire as well, you don't need it to join a club, and get points for it, but you need it to do multiplayer races online.

Jeff Gerstmann.

I literally shook my head in disbelief when I saw that review. Usually after some time passes and the "honeymoon" phase with a new game passes you start to see little things here and there that start to make you think maybe the reviews were accurate but two months later and I still find the reviews for this game silly. I haven't played a racer this much since Burnout 3 and NFS Underground. This is easily the best racer I've played in a LONG time bar none.

You should have seen the reaction I got when I posted the driveclub review as a reason I'm not a fan of him inside the recent Gerstmann love-in thread. It was amazing.

I feel the same too, haven't played a racing game(involving real world cars) this much since NFS:Hot Pursuit2010.

As someone driving in 3rd person camera mode I'm disappointed. The game is severely lacking in splashiness when driving through puddles and overall the impact the cars have on the wet road is just bad since the water doesn't really disperse behind the cars (if only the visibility during rain was so good in real life), also no moving rear wipers. The backlight reflections during motion at night make me doubt my ps4 is not defective.

Is there a more severe setting than heavy/stormy? At least when standing the downpour seems to be quiet mild.

The starfield simulation at a snowy night really fucks with my ability to concentrate on the road but that's something I have to take a closer look when it starts snowing here, but seems to be way more distracting than irl.

Sometimes I wish I could be as easily impressed as most other people, but alas, that's the life a nitpicky person has been chosen to live.

So being impressed by this game = being easily impressed? Huh. You know - I think I don't agree with you.

I don't think anyone has ever beaten me in a Super car race online. The Ariel Atom is a beast.

Swing the view around the car and you'll see two sprays coming up from the wheels.

#TeamCaterham ;)

I really can't get on with the Atom. I love the X-bow, Caterham, BAC and the TwinRun, but the Atom still eludes me.

It's really annoying as I can completely feel the potential for insanity in the car too!

Others are not easy to impress, you're just hard to impress. But maybe I can help you with a few points.

Rear wipers are usually activated when you change to the reverse gear because the airflow keeps the rain away from the rear window while driving. That's the reason why most cars don't even have them anymore.
Optical reasons too

The starfield simulation sadly looks like this irl too.. Just a few hours ago I saw it in front of me.

The splashing puddles are not in here because of performance reasons I think.

It's hard to imagine there are people who are not impressed by this, since there is no driving game that does it better.

Maybe i'm off point on this but one thing I notice in Gaf is that there is two different types when it comes to being impressed or not impressed with a game's looks. Some (and i include myself here) look at the entire picture and its prettiness or realistic look (depending on the game) and judge on that and then there are others who have a more technical tick box type appreciation of graphics (i'm guessing those very interested in tech or involved in graphics themselves). I don't think either is more right or wrong, just an observation.

I think the problem is that some folks just have unrealistic expectations when it comes to graphics and realism.

My brother is like that. I showed him the graphics in the new Madden game on PS4 (he's not a sports gamer, so he's only peripherally aware of how they've evolved graphically). When I went into Replay Mode and started moving the camera around the stadium, he was completely unimpressed by the fact that the digital stadium didn't have the real restaurants in the concourse area visible behind the seats.

You just can't impress some people.

You're probably right! In my mind I'm comparing DC to chase HQ on my spectrum in the 80's and i'm blown away by how far we've come!

Stuff like that is just not possible (not because the systems are incapable of such detail). Deals and such would have to be made which would cause productions rates to soar. The only way your brother would be satisfied is if someone made a community made football game (with graphics on par with Madden) and added in details such as real restaurants, ads, etc. I think it's one of the reasons MVP Baseball 2005 on PC had such a big community.

But the problem with the impossible to please is that they're impossible to please.

Even if they spent the time and money to get every restaurant right, he'd find something else to pick on. "How come some of the people in the crowd look like clones of one another? The real scoreboard in ___________ stadium has a burnt out pixel in the fourth row, twelfth column. The one in the game doesn't. Psh."

It's just what that kind of person does. Just gotta ignore it, because it won't change.

At times this is just a good, albeit, very good looking videogame.

But then you'll approach a corner in the wet and the clouds will part, the glare off the track will blind you. And as you come around that corner the sun will be at your back lighting the track ahead, water glistening on the track and you'll admit to yourself,

"This is an astonishing looking videogame".

And it's year one folks, not bad for a laptop cpu.

So that lightning, it can actually randomly hit the power lines ;)

The things that they sought to simulate in Driveclub goes far and beyond in what's needed.

The foliage gets wet ffs. Not to mention the wind affecting almost everything it can. Like the lake in a track gets turbulent when it's windy/stormy.

Yep. It's distracting.

But I really enjoyed a few races with some Sonic tunes on them.
I definitely will be trying to make an enjoyable playlist.

Yup, couldn't believe it myself. I think I saw it even hit rocks :)
yeah I saw it hit something and explode a bit on... the North Vancouver map... Maplewood? the small track across the bay from downtown Van :P the lightning there hits on the north side of the map and something has a fiery little boom
