I just fought the nicest guy in For Glory haha. I won one match and he changed his name to "Your Good" (mispell made it cuter), then I won again and used "Train Me!" (little did he know I'm not really good) and he kept changing his name to fun things. Then when I was going to leave I put "GG" and he changed to "AW MAN" and then "MY HEART" so I had to stay haha.

Man, I'd love to sign up for the Ranbats but I don't think I'll be able to commit to a weekly thing at least until end of January. When does the season end?

I know I'm late but

I'm mostly for it because it gives certain characters tools to deal with certain match ups (Ike in particular is a lot better with customs IMO), but if no one else is for it, I don't mind too much.

As for a quick draft of a legal stage list, I'd recommend something like:

Starter:
Final Destination/Omega Stages (Though regular FD has the light that can get distracting…)
Battlefield
Smashville
Town and City
Lylat Cruise

Counterpick:
Skyloft
Castle Siege
Halberd
Delfino
Duck Hunt
KJ64 (Might be too big for 1v1s?)

There might be a stage or two up for consideration, but that's what I got so far. If anyone thinks a stage should be added or removed, let me know and we can talk, though I'm heading to sleep soon.

Personally I'd add Wuhu Island for sure, and Norfair and Stadium 2 depending on if people want them. There's really nothing wrong with Wuhu other than the glitch in the boat section but honestly that section lasts so little and the glitch is so character and position specific that it's impractical. Norfair's lava is really a non issue tbh given that anyone can dodge it outside the capsules, and I can't say much about Stadium 2 but I've seen people argue for it and it's not as bad as it was in Brawl.

@Karst

I disagree about no customs. Sure, it doesn't benefit everyone equally, but in the long run it helps matchup viability more than it harms it. Also, some characters not getting much out of customs just means that their defaults were always their best option anyways.

Anyways, want to try playing?

So again, we are matched up against someone randomly? And we have to face them on the weekend?
Right now, there are 40 people signed up. I'll just pretend that's the final number in my below example:

The ranbat is RR, and everyone plays one match a week. However, if we did a 40 person RR, that would take 40 weeks, or most of a year. Likely, a good number of people will want to drop out due to lack of interest before that occurs. Ideally, the ranbat lasts about 2 months, or 8 weeks.

As such, the 40 players will be divided into 5 groups of 8. I will probably sort everyone alphabetically for the first season. Every week, you must play someone new in your bracket, until everyone has played everyone. You are welcome to play more matches ahead of time, but the season won't be over until either 8 weeks are up (well, 7 in this case) or everyone has played their matches. You are only being ranked against players within your bracket.

At the start of the next season (~2 months from now), I will reorganize the brackets according to scores. The highest scoring player from each bracket will be placed in a bracket, then the next highest, etc. This ensures that everyone is playing people close to their level. At the end of the second season, the highest ranking player from each bracket will move up to the next bracket, and the lowest ranking player will move down. This will ensure that each bracket retains the appropriate challenge level.

Let me know if any of that is unclear, or if you have concerns about my thoughts and approach.

I'm all about a discussion regarding stages, but Stadium 2 is pretty chaotic (that's the one with the swords, right?). I can't support that.

I really feel that customs exaggerate bad matchups more than they help them. That's just my opinion. If there's overwhelming support for customs, I'll change it, but thus far only two people have expressed a contrary opinion. Sakurai has made it pretty clear that the game is not balanced around custom moves, though.

Sounds really neat actually. Thanks for clarifying

And we tell you the winner of a certain game?

Oh and I also vote for regular stages. Nothing with hazards. And every stage can be picked but in omega mode. Of course battle field Smash ville etc are fine. Oh and I think custom moves and miis are not a good idea

I think we shouldn't have customs if only because grinding them is a pain and there's a chance people don't have enough of them for it to be fair.

However, I'd allow Palutena and Mii Characters to use customs since those are in base game. For it to be fair whoever uses a custom character should show the specials before the match or something. I'd like to use my Mii Brawler! It's very fun to use haha.

There are two ways to approach reporting wins:
1) I make a Google Spreadsheet and invite everyone with editing permission.
Pro: decentralized and anyone can play anyone to report results.
Con: someone could be an asshole and mess up the Spreadsheet - I don't think changes are trackable.

2) I use Challonge to create RR brackets, and invite everyone with editing permission.
Pro: decentralized, and players can only report results to the matches I set up.
Con: less flexibility in matches, which I think is desirable. You would have to specifically play whoever I match you up with.

Neither system seems perfectly ideal, but the idealist in me wants to give everyone the benefit of the doubt to be honest and report their wins with integrity. That's why I'm inclined to go with Google Spreadsheet. If there were a way to use Challonge without pre-set brackets, I would go with it.

While Palutena has all of her customs at the start, you're still giving her flexibility other characters don't have in her moveset selection. A Palutena player might select Reflect against Samus, but Superspeed against Ganondorf, which is what everyone would like to be doing if customs were allowed. As a Palutena secondary (even if I'm bad with her), I totally understand where you are coming from. I just don't think it would be fair. If one character can use customs, everyone should be able to.

After the first season is over, we can hold a vote on customs or no customs. For the first season, I'd just like to focus on making everything run smoothly and simply. :-)

Unrelated but what the hell is teabagging? Crouching repeatedly?

I do that all the time haha, had no idea people were offended by it. There's nothing cooler than doing a crouching moonwalk with Yoshi after a kill.

You're thinking of Kalos, Stadium 2 is the other one. Honestly tho I'm neutral on that one anyways, don't really care much if it's legal or not.

Anyways, the only custom I'd say really needs to get fixed is Mii Brawler's third up B. Everything else seems like a non issue to me so far personally, altho the meta is still too young to call anything broken or not imo.

Signed up. I have been busy with school the past two weeks, so I haven't done much smashing. But, I have the next two weeks off, starting this weekend, and I hope to play quite a bit!

Wait, so matches aren't going to be pre-assigned? That sounds potentially messy, to be honest. If it's up to the players to decide who they play with, it sounds like things might become confusing when players are trying to find an opponent but need to see who they played against previously or manage PMs and such, and I think it'll prolong the time between rounds.

If everyone in a given group is going to be playing each other anyways, it kinda sounds simpler to me if all the MUs were just determined from the get-go.

I'm not trying to tell you how to run anything Karst, buuuuuuuuut I would consider cutting off anymore entrants.

Just sayin. *cough*
I totally know where you are coming from, but I want to see where this goes. :-D

In my mind, it simplifies things in this way: in a typical tournament format, I might be assigned to play you. Argh, it turns out to be a bad week, and our schedules don't match up. Que irritation. However, if I can play anyone I want, then I might play against Beef instead, because our schedules match up better. The round progresses, and everyone is happy. Everyone is completely welcome to play multiple matches in a week. I might try to knock out all 8 of my "rounds" in a week or two, for example. If I have the time, I think that's just fine.

It should be easy to tell who you have played previously. I'll design a chart in Google Spreadsheet for scores to be entered. Just look on your chart and check for the blanks to see who is left each week.

Guys, newb on this game here. But played brawl for fun with my GF and little sister.

Any good advice for this new kirby player? So I won't get demolish by competitive player.T~T

I've noticed the topic of stage selection has come up, and I'd like to throw in this thread about how to handle legal stages.

Amazing Ampharos developed Balanced Brawl, which is a mod for Brawl that simply rebalances every character to be around Diddy Kong's strength and does nothing to change gameplay beyond how Brawl already played. He's also the man behind the Standard Custom Move Project to get custom moves in tourneys more easily, so I feel he has credentials. I agree with his argument about doing away with counterpicks and simply making every stage neutral. After all, what makes a stage less legal than others, and yet not banned?

I hope people don't mind if this thread was already posted here. I'd just like to bring up some discussion about the idea of a 13-stage list to pick from, with room for more or less.

I agree that having counterpick stages is silly.

I don't see what's wrong with Luigi's Mansion as a stage, though.

If it were entirely my choice, I'd say For Glory stages only, but I know most folks aren't keen on that. I could see Final Destination being banned just because the white lights kill my eyes.

Yeah I'm not sure how teabagging would work in Smash. If it really is crouching repeatedly, I've done that a few times accidentally when trying to crawl backwards after a KO lol

GG vena. I got to sleep now. Also you don't have to kill yourself next time we fight when I make a stupid self destruct. Play ya again next time.

Personally, I'd rather go with 11 stages consisting of:

Battlefield
Delfino Plaza
Kongo Jungle 64
Halberd
Lylat Cruise
Pokemon Stadium 2
Castle Siege
Palutena's Temple Ω
Town and City
Smashville
Duck Hunt
Wuhu Island

When the Miiverse stage drops I'm all for that too if there's no hazards. Of course then we'd need another stage, and I wouldn't mind seeing Windy Hill Zone. :)

Also, I chose to substitute Palutena's Temple Ω for Final Destination because, as you said, that background transition is intense. According to VGBootCamp the argument for this particular Ω stage is that it's the closest to Final Destination in terms of size, being a floating stage, and distance of blast zones.

Finally, with regards to Luigi's Mansion those columns can get in the way of projectiles, and (at least in Brawl) you can tech to ridiculous percents when the floors are still standing.

Going to practice jumping out and fair with Ike now? Be sure to know how far Ike can go

Ya my spacing was terrible half of the time, lol.

I'm still working on the timing of the short hops and dash cancelled shielding. I keep letting off the stick too soon and get stuck in the slide or hit A too soon and end up doing a charge.

Couldn't tell there was some mistakes on your dash cancelled shield. You were pulling it off very well and consistent.

I probably notice it since every mistake I notice and stick with me. :P

Like the three or what times where I did u-b rather than f-b and plummeted to my death lol.

I really wish Sakurai would just change this. Letting go of the dash to shield is just instinct for me, and I get hit all the time because of it. It doesn't make sense to my brain to keep holding forward while I'm trying to come to a full stop.

My new favorite thing to do in For Fun matches: When the Duck Hunt stage comes up I ignore the fight and just try to kill all the ducks.

That's not something to be fixed lol, thats a mistake we make. :P

If there's anything I love about Falco, it's how I have to know exactly when to use my attacks and know my opponent. Are there any other characters that require a lot of foresight and careful use of standard attacks and tilts? Basically, spacing is key.

Oh, regarding the ranbats, what would happen if one was unable to participate in one season but has played in previous seasons? Would we need to notify the guy in charge of any absence?
