What's the absolute worst game of 2014 you played?

I really didn't like Dragon Age. The combat was unsatisfying, and I'm no longer compelled by Bioware's dialogue wheels and quest design.

Destiny. Can't believe I bought that garbage. Such a waste of money.

Most overrated game for me is TLOUR :/
You guys made it seem like it was the greatest thing that has ever existed. After beating it on my friends PS4 it wasn't as bad as I initially thought it was, but it still didn't feel like anything special.

Haven't played a lot of games this year, but the worst would have to be Archeage.

Besides the horrible queue times at launch the grind was pretty awful. It has some interesting late game stuff like open world pvp, pirating, and trade routes, but the gameplay up until that point is pretty mind numbing.

Most bad games are pretty forgettable especially if they come free from PS+ or similar service so I'm really not sure of my worst experience. Of the full retail games that were released this year, I'd definitely say Watch Dogs was notable for being extremely boring. I'd probably say a Vita game had I bought any retail ones this year since they all look mediocre.

I mostly played great games all year but if I had to pick the worst one I'd say Master Reboot or The Evil Within. Both games were really boring slogs. I may go back to The Evil Within to see if the second half gets any better. Second half of Bravely Default deserves a mention as well.

Mercenary Kings, Watch Dogs, and Evil Within in that order. All these games just disappointed me in so many different ways.

Mercenary Kings' load times and frustrating missions designs were absolutely terrible. It also ran terrible too.

Watch Dogs was fun when I wasn't paying attention to the story. I really disliked the protagonist, he was like a creepy middle aged soccer dad and the villain looked like Larry King with down syndrome. I thought the way Ubisoft portrayed Chicago was pretty lifeless for an open world game.

Evil Within is kind of a weird game too. It's not scary what so ever, which is incredibly disappointing. I like the environments and enemy models, but it's just a shame the plot fails to materialize into anything remotely meaningful.

maybe tomorrow it rains
Metrico was the fastest I've ever uninstalled a game, after about 15 minutes of play. Borderlands 2 on the Vita is the fastest I've traded a game in. They're probably tied for the most objectively terrible games I played this year.

Amazing Spider-Man 2 is the most disappointing gaming experience I had in 2014. I thought ASM was pretty good and an excellent base for an improved sequel. ASM2 was a gigantic leap backwards. Performance, story, gameplay. It was all shit. A glitchy mess. The only enjoyable aspect of the game was the unlockable costumes. Not worth what I paid for it on day one.

I guess it would be a tie between The Evil Within and Thief, both of which happen to be 2014's lowest scoring triple-a games.

I can't believe TEW is from the same guy who made God Hand, Resi 4 and Vanquish. It's an experience that lacks personality and is filled with seemingly arbitrary design decisions (what an ill-advised stealth system!) that slow the game down. I can't stand the imprecise, clumsy controls. What a charmless game.

The Evil Witihn is basically The Expendables of survival horror. All the tropes are present, but there's no understanding. Gameplay is just a bunch of rehashed horror vignettes. The insta-death scenarios are tedious rather than stressful or exciting.

Thief is a broken, tragic, rewritten mess of a game. High quality art assets can't disguise fundamentally flawed stealth mechanics.

While the city looks gorgeous, its pretty much empty. The sidequests are neat, but most of the time I'm just exploring an vacant apartment; no one's home. If I mess up the lockpicking or set off a trap 9 times out of 10 it doesn't matter since it's empty. All these cool additions to the game are underused. Also, there's so many loading zones! Enter a one room apartment. Pick up a letter opener and a ring. Leave in under 20 seconds. Load for just as much. This content just slows the game down. Then there's a lack of abilities and gadgets. I like Swoop, but it's basically a grounded Blink and the rest of Garrett's abilities are essentially uniquely skinned door-openers.

The sound-mixing is atrocious. The worst I've ever heard in any AAA game. That's not hyperbole. It's broken. Sound cuts out frequently, guards across a courtyard sound like their yelling into the players ear, npcs yell ambient dialogue over Basso repeatedly during cutscenes, and Garrett's voice actor frequently pauses to his read lines. The lip-syncing is horrid. I really miss the sound propagation from the earlier titles. Unless you're walking on glass or water, it's doesn't matter where you walk, Garrett won't make a sound.

Garrett's movement has a nice heft to it. He feels present. But moving through the world is about working out exactly what the designer wants you to do, not using your instincts or experimenting. If a rope arrow is just out of reach, don't bother trying to grab it. You need to look for a crate, or a ladder or a walk way to reach it. It's a discrete puzzle that was made for that specific instance. I wish it was like Assassin's Creed or Mirror's Edge. Instead it's an awkward compromise that isn't very enjoyable. Unlike Dishonored, where the designers have a set of rules that you can rely upon, Thief is about instances. These guards will patrol in this pattern no matter what. This object can be leaned around, while another identical object cannot. You can climb this crate, but not this one.

Both are major disappointments considering the respective teams past work.

For me it is Destiny. Not bad for a free-to-play game....except they hyped this garbage to the bullshit and then charged us for it! Oh yea....before releasing it they decided to cut out content and sell it as a season pass/upcoming DLC. Also the one feature that could've alleviated a lot of frustration and helped with replayability (matchmaking) was sadly left out from many of the game modes.

A real shame because the core mechanics are actually really solid and feel just like Halo. But unfortunately too many corporate bigwigs semed to have a hand in what the customer actually ended up getting which was a shadow of what this game could've been. What I was expecting to be my game of the year has basically made me lose all trust in the video game industry. I will never pre-order another game....ever! That is a huge thing for me because I don't mind plonking down cash early to get a couple of special editions etc but no more....nothing is worth getting ripped of again.

This is the biggest rip-off I have seen in all my years of gaming and i've been at it since the Atari 2600....so pretty much since games have been around. A real kick in the nuts. Thanks Activision and Bungie. I hope it was all worth it.

Amazing Spider-Man 2 is my winner. Not one decent thing i can say about it. Transformers was also garbage. Thief was a big let down as well.

I guess it was AC Unity and the crew... Both on PC. Tactical intervention was also garbage but I played it the first time in late 2013 so I guess it doesn't count.

Dues Ex: The Fall barely HD edition -- PC or Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate -- Barely competent version -- PC.

Both of these games were beyond awful. The first one just abruptly stops, and the 2nd one goes on way too long. They are both handheld --> PC conversions, so I think I've learned my lesson and will no longer be purchasing these types of games.

Soul Calibur: Lost Swords was probably the worst but I'll let it slide a little since it was free and they were experimenting

Actual retail title that sucked? Need for Speed: Rivals.
I got most wanted either free on PS+ or hugely discounted, enjoyed it a bit so I thought I'd give this one a go. Holy christ what a pile of shit.Constantly disconnecting, ruining races, events, even sometimes ruining multiplier and costing me all the points of several events at once on the racer side. Glitchy as hell, often I'd start a race to catch 4 guys and only one or two would spawn, other times I'd start a race and it spawned unavoidable police racing straight at me every time

Dishonourable mentions to: Remember Me, Brothers, Tales of Symphonia 2 HD

Semblance

shhh Graham I'm still compiling this Radiant map
Azure Striker Gunvolt, most likely. Game is thin on enemies and its level design is equally weak, although the boss fights were cool.

I do a good job of avoiding outright dumpster fire games. Usually, anyway.

I didn't really get any games I didn't like this year unless you include Playstation Plus, so I guess it'd have to be Mercenary Kings. It had some good ideas in there (the novel weapon customization being the highlight), but the core gameplay wasn't executed well enough for the grindy Monster Hunter trappings mashed in with it to be anything but dull. Not to mention that the art and music were really lame, and it also had a hugely underwhelming final boss with a simplistic and easy-to-dodge pattern.

Oh, and it crashed about 27 times according the my error log on my PS4.

Rift

I hadn't played the game in months, and decided to try it again with the launch of the latest expansion. Unfortunately, I changed ISPs during that time and forgot to update my email address since I lost access to the old one. The game decided that I was logging in from a different location because of the new ISP, and wants me to verify my identity through my old email account. It denies me access to support and everything so I just gave up and uninstalled.

This made me laugh.

Worst game I played this year was probably some forgettable indie title I got in a Humble Bundle or through PS+. Games like Contrast, Road Not Taken or Proteus...just ugh. Not my thing I guess.

In terms of big releases, for me Destiny, Smash Bros 3DS and Infamous: Second Son were disappointing and very mediocre, but I wouldn't go so far as to call them bad games.

Some of you saying watch_dogs and destiny leads me to believe you don't play many games, they were disappointing for sure but worst game of 2014? come oooon.

Worst for me was the new Sonic game Rise of Lyric.

Expected garbage and was not dissapointed

The worst I played this year from any year? Easily BioShock Infinite.

The worst from this year that I really played? Danganronpa. Disappointing, hugely overhyped, and barely fitting of any praise I saw of it, let alone comparisons to the superior Zero Escape series.

I'm sure I played some that weren't good and not worth my time at all.

The Evil Within.

Shitty mechanics, floaty controls, 16:9 forced screen on consoles and a bunch of scenarios where your only option is running away while dodging dozens of traps, blades, bombs etc.

It was frustration upon frustration.

That sure is a lot of votes for Watch Dogs. I wonder if we can learn anything from the ride that game has been on in this forum?

Some of you saying watch_dogs and destiny leads me to believe you don't play many games, they were disappointing for sure but worst game of 2014? come oooon.

Of course it's like that, but people voting on game they actually played is what gives threads like this any meaning at all.

Now we're talking.

Worse 2014 game I've played; Metal Dead
I just have some spare steam wallet at the time and thought "why not?". Also the game is really cheap.
Turns out the game is terribly animated, has dumb story, dumb characters and unfunny humor.
Nominated for Best Writing Comedy my ass!!

I have not checked but there are lots of destiny in here right?

Lol, seriously you guys need to play less aaa titles if that is your worst game of the year.

Well i think it came out this year, but..

Air Conflict: Vietnam what absolute FUCKING TURD of a game, i'd link a few videos i made on youtube of it but i'm on my tablet, just search for david wallett on youtube.. i swear I'm the only one who made videos regarding it's shit camera.

It was a rental and thank the gods, if i paid the £49.99 there asking for on the psn store i would of threw up blood, it's unplayable and just utter, UTTER shit.

That honor probably goes to Mario Golf on 3DS. And, y'know, it's not even a bad game. Golf just bores the fuck out of me and I don't even know why I picked the game up. I guess I just don't buy bad games.

I regret buying Destiny but that's not a, uh, a terrible game either. I mean it's got some solid core mechanics but the whole formula is just way too grindy for me and the story is a god awful mess. I haven't played it in about a month and a half.

Watch Dogs.

Only due to the greatest self discipline and the will to endure great psychological distress was i able to finish that game.
I still wake up at night, screaming and thinking about the police chase missions in the second half of the game.

Also found this shocking, my nephew plays like 5 AAA games a year, so it's understandable that his worst would be one of those.

But a dedicated gaming community like GAF? you think anyone willing to devote hours of their lives talking about games on the internet would play more than just the same old handful of heavily marketed titles of the year.

Crimson Dragon.

Downloaded it free with gold, thought "can't be as bad as people say" and loaded it up.

It was worse.
