Dragon Age: Inquisition PC performance thread

Not playing until they fix this shit.

What do you want them to fix? Last patch fixed the issue with the mouse being unable to click stuff in the UI. All that remains afaik is the auto-centering tac cam which is an issue no matter your controls.

It plays pretty much the same as DAO to me.

Bought a Windows 8.1 Pro key off the reddit software swap thread. Best $15 I've ever spent!

Really wish I would have upgraded from Windows 7 sooner. Not only is my average FPS much higher in this game, but everything else form bootup to program launching is so much faster and snappier, especially on SSD.

Not sure if it was the latest patch or OS upgrade, but my cut scene stutter is gone as well. I can finally play this smoothly at max 1440P.

WHOA nice!!

so Win 8.1 is definitely a much better OS than Win 7? I thought I heard on GAF that 8.1 sucks before

it definitley is. win8 had a rocky start but its been fine for some time now. also dont take stuff on gaf at face value

good advice. Sometimes I assume GAF posters know what they're talking about compared to other gaming forums, but I forget that's not always the case

Windows 8 is still kind of a pile but it's probably worth it for the undeniable FPS increases in some modern games. I won't be downgrading although I'm really looking forward to dropping it for Windows 10.

Only issue I have with Win 8.1 is that loudness equalization doesn't work, so I'm constantly having to adjust my volume to compensate for loud sounds.

Haha sweet! guess I'll have to bite the bullet and wipe my system for a clean installation of 8.1

Once upon a time I was a Windows 8 hater.
A h8er, if you will.
My only experience was with the vanilla 8 and it was pretty bad when it first launched. After seeing reports of DA:I on 8.1 I jumped in and I too think its an excellent OS. I'm very happy I switched. Everything is fast, snappy, clean, and there's a nice improvement in DA:I.

Yup. Absolutely don't understand the people who still hold 7 in higher regard than 8.1. It has so far been better in every regard than Win 7.

Yeah, it's great. I'm using Classic Shell with it so I have the Windows 7 start menu still, but all the improvements of 8.1.

There is no reason not to upgrade. Those clinging onto 7 at this point are either uninformed or delusional.

I actually don't even use the Start Menu in Win7, but I use a bunch of shortcut icons on the desktop.

Can you still do that in Win8.1???

The start menu itself is fine too, really the only objectionable thing about the OS are the full screen Metro UI apps which are 100% optional to use.

I wish that 8.1 would pin frequently used programs to the start screen. That is the only thing I really miss from 7, because I never did it myself.

That's not completely true, because things like PC settings run in full screen, just like the apps.

Most of those settings are accessible through other means (control panel or right-clicking start button for instance). Only time I've used the settings menu from the charm is to get to the advanced start-up options (and I later found out I could just hold down shift when clicking restart to do the same).

What PC settings? Control panel and everything related to it is exactly like it was on Win 7. I've been tinkering with the settings a lot and I have yet to come across a full screen settings screen.

I thought only certain settings could be changed from the PC settings charm or whatever it's called? I don't think control panel has everything as that was one of the big complaints, that MS split things up instead of having it all in one place like windows 7.

Other than settings for the lock screen and start menu stuff, I can't think of anything else that requires you to be in full screen metro/modern UI apps.

The regular control panel actually has /more/ settings than it does in Windows 7, but that's mostly because of the fact it has some more features.

Just saw this in the release notes for the new Nivida beta drivers 347.09 under known issues with windows 7.

--Dragon Age Inquisition runs poorly (stutters) on NVIDIA hardware. [1588023]

So looks like Windows 7 performance is a driver issue, that's probably why windows 8.1 performs so much better, as I didn't see the same thing listed under it's heading.

Is it just me or does Mantle increase the load times significantly? Running a 280x if anyone is curious.

I'm the type of weirdo that wishes the load times were longer.... I'm glad for Mantle slowing down loading a bit, SSD makes reading any of the cards super hard (I know... I know, first world problems etc) haha.

Or its just what a lot of people guessed could be a problem ever since Mantle was announced - that the extra work involved in optimizing for Mantle would leave other areas facing sacrifices due to lack of attention.

If it was simply a driver issue, its not likely that Nvidia would be so behind on this, especially after some time has passed.

I suppose that shouldn't be massively surprising. The devs spent a lot of time working to get AMD hardware working well with Mantle and Nvidia hardware got the short end of the stick.

Its what a lot of people predicted with the advent of Mantle from the beginning. It creates extra work for the devs that could be to the detriment of other areas.

Right, but I would think that both versions of windows would have the same issues, but they don't. Maybe DX 11.1 helps get over the driver problems?

Or the attention to Nvidia hardware was so limited that only Windows 8 really got the love it needed.

But yea, I dunno. I'm no expert on this stuff and am just guessing.

i have two 7950s crossfire and both battlefield 4 maps and dragon age take forever to load. BF4 is especially really bad, the other day i waited 5 minutes for caspian to load

said fuck it and quit. wtf is this shit?

What are some performance hogs I can tone down? Game is running as bad as ACU on my 970, how is this possible? 40-60 when the world is empty and 30 in the first village when all those 20 NPCs are on screen. And that's at 1600x900 too, fucking ridiculous.

It should also be noted this was listed under Single GPU Issues. That being said, I'm running dual 670s in SLI under Windows 7 64-bit and I still get minor stuttering even though my frame rate shows a solid 60fps. I'm hoping they get this ironed out for the official WHQL drivers. I don't mess with BETA drivers any more.

Keep having a problem all of a sudden where the game seemingly ALT+Tab's back to deskop and I can still hear the music running but I can't tab back to the game so I have to use Task Manager to close it. This time it let me play for almost an hour before it did it, but its a continuous problem the last few days that's really annoying. :(

MSAA completely off, Frostbite is not meant for it

After that, try the following on High (instead of Ultra):

Tesselation
Shadows
Effects
Terrain

HBAO instead of HBAO Full

Boo no new optimizations in the new Nvidia drivers... It's not likely we will ever get some huh?

Something tells me Bioware isn't going to go out of their way to improve performance on their own.

The new (beta) 347.09 nvidia drivers have improved my performance noticeably.

Intel i5 2500k @ 4.5
680 GTX 2 gb
8 gb ram
Windows 7

1920x1080
Everything set to high, ssao, and no MSAA.

I haven't gotten very far so I can't judge much of the game, but one of the early areas where you step out into a village with dozens of npcs standing in formation used to drop my game to the mid 30s, and running around that village would regularly cause my fps to fluctuate between 60-40 fps. With the 347.09 drivers, my fps never drops below 45 and it consistently stays in the higher 50s.

The beta 347.09 drivers did fix the fog problem for me - as in almost every piece of mist/fog looked like it was from a game on the PS2 era.

However, the performance took a dive. I think. Barely managing 30 frames with everything maxed on 1440p.

780ti SLI

I made the move from Windows 7 to 8.1 about 2 weeks ago and I basically have everything running just like windows 7 but with lots of performance and security enhancements. My only gripe with the OS is how it handles multimonitor setups. Your mouse won't smoothly move from the top/bottom corners into the next screen correctly and will snag on the original monitor. It's not a huge issue but I do find myself getting annoyed with it since I trace the borders of my monitors as an OCD sort of thing.

Bitlocker integration was also a fantastic replacement for the now defunct TrueCrypt.
