I didnt. Felt limited in the early game, then by the end there were times that i was bored of the battles and just wanted to spam the default attack button during trash mobs.
That's not the worst they can do, going by Xillia 1 and 2. I'm willing to wait and see how Zestiria turns out, but Namco's behavior regarding the series this past gen doesn't inspire much confidence in me. The last console mothership Tales game that was released in an actual completed form was arguably Abyss. Some of Vesperia PS3's content does seem to have been intended for the 360 version (Patty, for instance), Graces on the Wii's initial release was a glitchy mess, and Xillia was a horribly rushed product upon release. I don't count Xillia 2 as a complete product because it seems to have been made specifically because Xillia was so rushed. I remember my friends who imported speculating back in early 2012 on whether Namco were just going to do a director's cut.

Abyss was rushed too, seeing as how the JP version was missing Guy and Natalia's second mystic arte and some other things that were added to the NA version.

Xillia 2's writer is doing the plot? Oi... Was not a fan of Xillia 2's try-hard edginess and found the whole
fetus in the sky and womb watches
to be outright gross and not really fitting of a Tales game.
Did Xillia 1 and 2 have different writers? I'm genuinely curious.
I'm not neutral with Xillia 2, but leaving that aside I didn't mind the fetus thing even if it was weird. I was busy raging because of how shitty the dungeon actually was lol.
In general I found the story and characters much much better than in the original. The relationship between Ellie and Ludger and Ludger and Julius was really well done too.
I guess that like in Vesperia, the characters help me overlook some weird stuff.
I agree that the last complete Tales game was Vesperia. We got Graces F which was the best version though.

We'll have to agree to disagree there. I much preferred the characters in the first game to the second. Xillia 2's plot and characters felt really taped on. And Ludger being silent seemed like a terrible waste of an otherwise seemingly interesting character. I just could not bring myself to care about him when there was an already much more interesting pre-established cast surrounding him. I also found it jarring how Ludger was written so that almost everoyne in the Xillia 1 cast comes to regard him as a bff within 5 minutes of meeting him. Considering how a lot of Xillia 1's character interactions dealt with coming to trust each other (and it wasn't just Alvin), Ludger's integration with the cast felt super lazy. It's not that I disliked him and Elle, I just did not like how they were integrated into the story. Julius I also couldn't come to care about because the way the writer wanted me to feel sad for him just did not click with me. The fractured dimensions concept was interesting, but ultimately executed in a way that I found silly at best. I generally consider myself to be able to stretch my suspension of disbelief pretty far, but all I saw fractured dimensions as was an excuse to reuse assets from the first game for a rushed sequel to a rushed game. The padding of the debt system was just salt in the wound.
Xillia 2 feels like the FFXIII-2 to Xillia. Crap on a decent world with convoluted time travel/dimension hopping. Except while Noel was likable and believable, I found the idea that Ludger, who canonically had much less training than most of Xillia's cast (even Jude and Leia), was suddenly this super powerful guy who could use 3 different weapons
and apparently single-handedly kill the entire Xillia 1 cast, too
.
I have a harsh view on the game, but Xillia 2 just did not sit well with me. I think Xillia 1 had some of the best world building in the series and I did not appreciate what the sequel did with it. I've compared it to Naruto Shippuden where suddenly
an entire clan are the most important people in the world
.
I'd have ultimately preferred if Ludger and Elle (and Julius) had their own game with their own cast. Because as things stand, I don't feel that Xillia 2 fits well with the first game at all. Especially with only a year separating them. And that's my rant for the day.
Abyss was rushed too, seeing as how the JP version was missing Guy and Natalia's second mystic arte and some other things that were added to the NA version.
That's true. I consider that minor compared to the three console mothership titles that came after it. But in that case... I guess Rebirth was the last Tales game released in a complete form? Kind of sad considering how Rebirth originally released 10 years and 2 days ago.
I really like how expressive Slay is. It'll be interesting to have a more active main character instead of the more reversed ones we had as of late.
It's also funny what mainline games get the whole blink and you'll miss them in the recap of past Tales games there. I thought they ignored Leganida and Innocence lol.
All of those cameo costumes look like trash. The problem with cameo costumes is that they were designed with a certain visual style in mind. They do not fit these character models in the slightest. Trench coat Mikleo is da bomb though.

Well pretty normal with how cameo costumes always have been. Remember Symphonia's ones that basically looked like they stuck the head onto the costumes
The male swimsuits are pretty awful, most of them aren't even swimwear anymore, just summer clothes. Sorey is alright I guess, but the baggy trunks are ugly.

Yup, it seem so. I understand where some of your complains come from. I found the worldbuilding in Xillia to be quite interesting and I found Gaius to be an extremely well written antagonist all around. As opposed as other people, I actually liked Jude a lot. I think he was a quite well written and realistic character too. When the game starts he is just a teen that is following his fathers steps and the whole game is more or less him trying to find what he wants to do with his life. He admires Milla because she's so firm and strong-willed, a trait he doesn't have early in the game. And I felt he admired and respected Gaius too even if he was the bad guy.
Some people complain that he fell in love with Milla, but I thought it was kind of normal all things considered. And I felt that in Xillia 2 the chemistry between them was great because Jude isn't a kid anymore and you can see a complicity between them (as equals) that didn't existed in the original game.
From Xillia OG my fav characters where Jude, Elize and Milla. In Xillia 2 I liked Alvin and loved Leia's character arcs. I never cared too much about Rowen though.
About the Kresnik thing, I didn't see a problem because their importance was there in the original game. There are a lot of Kresnik referents through the game and it was hinted that he was a really important character in the past. So in that sense I found Xillia 2 to just be an extension to that. Ludget may be a overpowered, though.
And the part where you say that the party accepts him in 5 minutes, I don't think it really was him. I think Jude becomes a party member so early into the game for a reason, and that reason probably is to make the rest of the cast stick. It's not that they believe Ludger because he is awesome, but that they believe Ludget because of Jude's faith in him. Something like that.
The part about the silent character and Elle. I agree the silent character idea was flawed. I really liked Elle and I thought they kind of succeed at making her fill the void left by Ludger lack of voice. Sometimes it was awkward though.
Not trying to change your opinions, obviously, but I can't help but like reading somebody that has such a different opinion about the game.
Hearts DS. I think Hearts and Xillia 2 have the better plot in the series so I'm glad he's doing this one, though the story seems boring so far.
Btw we're getting a new trailer for jump festa right?
So basically: I don't like the generic jrpg nice guy protag look that has stayed the same for years? Valid complaint m80, should have just said it from the start.
So if I want to import this game, where should I order it from? If I get it from Play Asia, will I get anything extra like the mystic artes or costumes?
Yea, it feels like no ones really talking about it on gaf. Like the announcement thread had a lot of hype but now it's like nothing besides this thread.

His expressions in the OVA trailer were really funny though.
I'll welcome a up-beat and funny main character for a change. We've had a silent one (which wasn't all that good), a shy smart dude, Asbel, and a already developed (yet awesome character).
Not sure how I feel about Shing/Kor in Hearts R. He feels like your standard shounen hero. Dumb, bad with romance, and randomly driven by anger/revenge at times.

I've never said otherwise. He is a standard shonen hero, but I find him enjoyable. As opposed as Asbel in Graces, which was absolutely terrible.
As others have said, I wish Ludget talked in the game.
More devs should try to improve what Persona Team did with Catherine. Instead of having to bother with every single tiny decision, have some internal barometer that makes your character talk in different ways depending on your previous choices.
I hate when silent characters get a close-up shoot yet they don't say anything.
That kind of worried me in Persona 5. In 3 / 4 it wasn't a problem because there weren't many proper in-engine cutscenes. I wonder how they'd handle it there, but that is kind OT.

Localization changed a lot of characters. Shing doesn't feel obnoxious in the original, I don't feel they ever pushed for him to be over confident like you see in the opening with "Kor Meteorite doesn't try. Kor Meteor DOES!" In the original text he's restating what he learned from his grandpa. He still had shounen hero traits though. Then we have Hisui, now a country hick who is always angry and threatening violence and death on everything. A lot of characters got dramatically changed in the localization unfortunately =/.
Important context is pushed aside for something new and for Hisui's case... He's now a complete asshole. Maybe spoilers for Hisui?
Hisui had a lot of respect for Shing's grandfather and doesn't ever speak ill of him in any way. Day after his death, Hisui says to Shing "Yeah, yeah. Who died and made you boss?" in the localized version, and he continues to use that line for some time in skits. They ruined his character IMO, who was originally just an overprotective brother who wanted the best for his sister and for her to be healed of her curse. He may come off angry at first but he cools off, forgives and gets along with everyone, but the localized version has none of this. He's just always angry.
From the interactions in the million of trailers and the OVA preview, he looks like to be one of the more expressive and fun Tales protagonists in recent years which is a welcomed change from the ones we had in the past.

From a summary I read the most interesting thing about it is it confirms the fusions have Mystic Artes, and a female hyouma shows up that might be Alisha, suggesting she gets cursed or whatever at some point in the story.

People like Yuri because he never has that major development moment where he makes a mistake, loses face, and has to deal with the consequences. In fact, most of Yuri's actions have no consequences to him.
You wouldn't have liked Ludger if he talked. He would have actually reflected on the many bad things happening to him. And then people would've just called him whiny.

Because making mistakes automatically makes someone an idiot, amirite?
I get that people look for different things in protagonists, but I like some sense of development. Didn't really get that from Yuri. And it really grates on me when a character gets off scott free for actions that should really have a consequence.
I'm not sure of what mistakes you're talking about but it's just the writing the makes them idiots (asbel, *wink wink*) or actually decent protagonists.

Bull. I don't mind characters who grow at all. The parts about Ludger I really did like was on how he had to reflect on his tough choices and his relationship with Elle. The ending is some really powerful stuff, probably tugged on my heart strings more than any other Tales game did.
The problem with many of the leads isn't that they grow or have to deal with consequences or make tough choices. Luke is completely insufferable at the start of Abyss (although he gets better). Asbel doesn't project any strength at all. And Emil is puke-in-my-mouth levels of bad because the writers don't incorporate any subtlety in that character at all. Lloyd is okay I guess, but nothing exceptional.
I like my variety of main characters and most importantly, the kind of team dynamic that it brings to each Tales games.
Be it the confident, swag Yuri, the spoiled, immature brat that is Luke, or the naive, love-struck Jude. That difference also leads to a different vibe and team-dynamic.
